2014 Chevrolet Cruze Problems Range From Overheating Engines and Power Loss to Infotainment System Glitches and Malfunctioning Turn Signals

Apr 1, 2022

The 2014 model year was a more problematic one for the Chevy Cruze, more so than 2013 and 2015 editions. Vehicle stalls, malfunctioning turn signals, and overheating engines make the 2014 Cruze fall short of its rivals.

Key Points

  • The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze has nearly 570 owner complaints and seven recalls registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • According to owner complaints, the most frequent problem concerns a sudden loss of power while driving with the 1.4L turbocharged engine.
  • Reportedly, the power steering on the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze randomly goes out for seconds, making it difficult for drivers to maneuver.
  • Additional potential problems with the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze include reports of the car starting on its own, infotainment system glitches, and malfunctioning turn signals.
  • Problems with the engine overheating due to various issues have cost some owners over $3,000 to fix.

Almost Half of the 2014 Cruze’s 600 Owner Complaints Concern Reduced Engine Power, Improper Transmission Shifts, and Power Steering Failure

With 570 owner complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Cruze fared worse than most of the vehicle’s other model years.

Complaints cover a broad spectrum of issues, from steering problems to flawed windshields. But engine-related woes have been the most frequent.

Owners note that their Cruze randomly loses power and the illuminated “check engine” light engages. Besides loss of power, other symptoms include unusual engine noises and transmission malfunctions.

Another recurring problem for the 2014 Chevy Cruze pertains to the power steering assist, which may randomly stop, making the steering difficult to maneuver.

Electrical Problems in the 2014 Cruze May Lead to Radio Failures and the Vehicle Starting On Its Own

There are about 150 registered complaints registered with the NHTSA regarding the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze’s electrical system.

There are reports that the radio and AC have glitches that cause them to turn on and off at random, leading the driver to think the car has stalled when it hasn’t.

The failure of the infotainment screen means the driver does not have access to the backup camera. Also, turn signals may malfunction and stop ticking.

Another electrical problem includes the potential for the vehicle to start on its own when the key is left in the ignition. Owners say their Cruze was in “Park” when the engine started, only stopping when they removed the key.

Owners on different forums echo electrical problems. Over at Car Gurus, one owner said that when he turns the key to start the car, “it clicks once and everything goes off. The key won’t come out of the ignition.” Several other owners have replied, saying the issue derives from corrosion on the battery cables.

Engine Overheating is Another Problem for the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze that Can Cost Over $1,500 to Fix

According to reports at Car Complaints, owners have dealt with cooling problems and overheating in their 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. Again, owners have noted that there were no previous problems, and overheating occurred suddenly.

The source of the problem differs from one case to another. Some Cruze owners had to replace the radiator, and for others, the problem came from defective head gaskets or a tiny hole in the water pump.

However, the end result is the same: Overheating damages the engine, which can cost $1,700 on average to fix. One owner claims to have spent $3,300 fixing his 2014 Chevrolet Cruze’s overheating issues.

Chevrolet Recalled the 2014 Cruze Seven Times Over Issues That Include Unreliable Airbags and an Engine Block Heater That May Cause Electrical Shock

Within its first four years on the road, the 2014 Cruze was recalled seven times over various problems, including malfunctioning airbags.

According to one of the NHTSA’s recalls, the driver’s front airbag inflator can rupture in deployment and cause metal fragments to strike the car’s occupants. In 2014, GM began notifying owners to visit dealers to replace the faulty airbag.

Another serious safety issue pertains to engine block heater power cords. Exposure to cold weather can damage the insulation on the cable, allowing the wires to be exposed, increasing the risk of electrical shock.

The 2014 Cruze was also recalled two times for rollaway issues, for two different reasons. A 2014 recall is over a broken transmission adjuster cable that makes the driver unable to shift the gear to the “Park” position.

Two years later, in 2016, GM acknowledged that removing the key without putting the transmission in “Park” may result in rollaway, hence another recall.

2014 Chevy Cruze Gets Decent Gas Mileage at Up to 42 Mpg Highway, but the Problematic Compact Sedan Falls Short of its Competition

The 2014 Chevy Cruze comes with some serious problems that can cost a lot to fix. Issues including random engine stalls, electrical problems, and power steering failure make the Cruze fall short of many of its rivals.

The 2014 Honda Civic, for example, comes with better standard features and has less than 250 owners complaints with the NHTSA despite selling 53,000 units more than the 2014 Cruze.

Frequently Asked Questions

By Stephanie Stephan | Apr 1, 2022

What are the Most Common Problems of the Chevy Cruze?

GM extended the warranty for the Chevy Cruze’s leaking water pumps in 2011-2015 models and first-gens continue to suffer from defective PCV valve covers that damage the turbo and encourage excessive oil consumption. Oil and coolant leaks are prevalent, and in later models cracked pistons and engine stalls dominate.

What is the Life Expectancy of the 2014 Chevy Cruze?

Some experts assert the Chevy Cruze can last from 200,000-250,000 miles with routine maintenance, while more conservative estimates place the Cruze’s life expectancy between 150,000-200,000 miles. However, owners report blown turbos, head gaskets, and engines at 108,000 miles and a loss of transmission power as early as 35,000 miles.

Finally!
I have 351,000 miles on my 2014 chevy cruze ltz and yes i have had so many things replaced on that vehicle but ive done it my self with the help of youtube! Problem is cheap parts but i love it cause is easy to fix. You really dont need top of the line tools to work on this vehicle. My transmission gave out on me at around 275,000 and that transmission was running on cracked casing and adding fluid all the time. I love my vehicle but........ Its has now come to the point that i think is an electrical problem cause out of nowhere everything run awful with all types of crazy lights on lol. But til this day on 351,000 miles i want to fix it just dont know how...... My point is keep your vehicle and work on it yourself (this is the first vehicle i have ever worked on) come on you can do it!!!

It seems to need repairs way too much in respect to the mileage on it.
I bought my pre-owned car in 2016 (it was 2 years old). It had less than 25,000 miles on it. It's a small car, but it's nice and great on gas. I was on my way to the dealer a few months after purchasing the car for a scheduled oil change when my check engine light came on. The catalytic converter needed to be replaced. Less than a year later, the catalytic converter needed to be replaced again, due to a recall. After that, the check engine light seemed to be on more than not on. Two months ago I had a major repair cost and it was necessary to pass an inspection. The thermostat, housing, and a relay switch (dealing with emission) had to be replaced. Between parts and labor, it cost me over $750.

60,000 miles
At 60,000 miles I had the thermostat, turbo and valve cover replaced with no help from GM costing me 1800.00 A month later a squealing noise was heard so had the belt pulley and belt replaced at another 675.00. Did not help the squealing. So was told the valve cover needed to be replaced, but was under a year warranty due to having it replaced 5 months earlier. This did not take care of squealing either. So last week had the crankshaft seal was replaced at another 300.00. So far the squealing is gone. Stay away from this car if you're looking for a preowned vehicle.

Do not buy the 2014 Cev
I could go on and on but I will make it simple. Bought the car used 1and 1/2 years ago. This week the water pump went out ($700) and the A/C went out too! To get that fixed would be $3100. If I did get the A/C fixed, which I am not, I have nearly paid in repairs for what I bought the car for!!! There have been so many major repairs! Car shopping again! Not Chevy ever again! Always had Toyota and going back there again. Oh, my glove box totally fell apart too. Never even heard of that happening! The car only had 52,000 miles on it. "Money Pit!"

60,000 miles issues
At 59,500 miles December 2019 I had a check engine light and the code read something about thermostat. I was out of town so cleared the code. Got back home and took the car to Firestone and they found two codes. Thermostat and Turbo. Plus told me my valve cover was leaking oil. I contacted GM in January 2020 and was told to get a diagnostic at a certified GM dealer and then they can help. January 2020 Dealership tells me the thermostat needs replacing.

Buyer beware!
Trust me and the others on here when we say DO NOT PURCHASE THIS CAR, EVER! Unless you have money to continuously have it at repair shop. The repairs are non stop. You will have a new engine before you can even get a used one paid off. Maybe a brand new 2024 Chevy Cruze will be better than any year prior, but maybe not, don't chance it. I've learned a valuable and costly lesson....I will never purchase ANY model by Chevrolet!

Junk
Valve cover gasket, turbo, water pump, some other part underwater pump, new thermostat, and a hose. New tires because the prior owner or intelligent person rotated the tires wrong. They looked great from the outside the inside of the tires not sure much. I can't get a break with this car. Now I've no more money to get it fixed. I'm the proud owner of my Cruze lt I'll get to look at it sit broken down

The vehicle is okay as a starter car, it has a lot of mechanical issues.
When I first bought it there were three recalls. Transmission. Ecu and air bags. The vehicle always has issues including fuel issues, randomly shutting off, I have had to pay to get the ECU reset twice not including the recall, I always have a lot of issues with this vehicle. I cannot wait to get rid of it. Either than the mechanical issues, the inside is comfortable for a basic starter car.

I've had my cruze for little over a year and its had issues... I've replace drivers window regulator, brake caliper on front , crankshaft seal and balancer, valve cover and gasket twice, intake manifold, oil cooler feed and return lines, gasket kit for oil cooler , serpintine belt, tensioner, water pump, glove box door... That is everything I've replace in the past year on this car.

Do not buy, waste of money.
At the five-year mark I had to install a completely new engine, my thermostat housing went out, and I have had to replace the head gasket I do not know how many times. It is not a reliable car, and I will not purchase from Chevrolet again. Mind you I kept up to date on the car. Always making sure my oil changes were on time, checking all fluids and other parts regularly.
accountCircle Heather O on October 3, 2021
I like that it does have a turbo but hate all the problems.
Turbo goes out transmission slips and also the thermostat goes out. The car overheats and then you blow the gaskets. I mean it is been okay to be a local car but I have had way too many problems with it. Just blah feel that I mean as a hoop ty it is okay but as a loyal car it is not really a good vehicle to drive I would not recommend this car to anyone.

Electrical Issues
I wouldn't recommend this vehicle to anyone who is starting out with their first vehicle. It has had numerous issues. The main issue would be the starting. I have had the negative battery cable replaced under the special coverage the GM motor had put out. After that, it was fine up until now. It had only been a couple of weeks for it to not start again.

I purchased the 2014 Chevy Cruze with 52,000 miles.Reached 99,950 miles, then catalyst converter ($800) immediately after turbo goes out ($1600). Changed water outlet 3 times.Still has water leaks. All these problems after a year of having it.Still making payments.Called corporate office, don't want to hear nothing, it's my problem now. WHAT A DISGRACE

A sedan with decent gas mileage. The electronics shut down while driving.
Decent gas mileage at an affordable price, but the vehicle has cheap parts and frequently has issues. The problems vary from minor to very major and seem to come one after the other. Parts are easy to come by at a reasonable cost. Would not recommend to someone looking for a pre owned vehicle and are not willing to frequently work on the car.

2014 Chevrolet Cruze 1.8L manual issue
So far on my 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clutch at 40,000 miles. Engine would stall randomly when stopping at a light or stop sign. And now at 52,000 miles I have a coolant leak and a defective temperature sensor 😩. GM don’t have the best product! If GM offer a 10 years warranty on their car they would go BROKE in repair alone!!!
accountCircle Kelsei B on August 6, 2021
It was an impulsive buy. And I regret it.
This car is great for a short amount of time but the gas mileage is not great. And I have had this car for 2 years and the transmission was supposed to be brand new when I got it and I am already experiencing transmission slips. Plus I cannot put my daughter's car seat in the backseat safely, there is no room.

Engine issues
I would not buy this car. I have had it in the shop 8 times just in a year and it’s still broken the mechanics don’t know why. The engine light won’t go off, says my engine is getting too hot when it’s not, tells me to idle my engine, had to get the thermostat changed 3 times this year. Don’t do it

20140chevyCruze that I purchased in 2019. I have had too many problems with the car to even list them. Countless of dollars. It is in the shop once again today. The car tries to start itself at times. The radio keeps blinking out. My engine had been overheating and had to be repaired. I'm so over this car!

Not worth it
I bought this car at 65,000 miles and have only had it for a year and a half. I had a coolant leak that needed to be fixed and also the engine light would turn on and off. Now, at 95,00 miles the car needs a new engine which is an expensive fix.Definitely would not buy again nor recommend to anyone.

Engine Failure at 9,713 Miles Chevy Cruze Eco
We bought this new in 2014. My husband kept it in top condition. On 1/17/20, the engine died after only 9,713 miles. We wanted GM to replace the engine, especially because of our low mileage and no warning lights. GM refused. We had bought chevys for 20 years, but we will never buy a Chevy again!

Unreliable car - do not purchase. I regret buying this car.
This car has many mechanical problems. I have spent so much money to repair this car on top of my car payment. I do like the Bluetooth connectivity but that is standard now in most cars. This car is not reliable. It was fine for the first 60,000 miles but after that it constantly had problems.
accountCircle Dakota H on September 12, 2021
Great first care not long term reliable.
Transmission issues. Have had over $4000 of work needed at 100,000 miles. The turbo needs to be replaced which is an $1800 job and the catalytic converter needs to be replaced which is an $1800 job as well. So I wouldn't say it is very reliable. It is a great first car. It is very comfortable.

Chevy cCruzes are horrible.
I had to get a reset on the computer twice, electrical issues, fuel pump issues, within the first three years. I bought it brand new 5 miles on it. Once the three-year warranty was up all the problems came back. Stalls out constantly and does not get enough fuel. Not worth the money at all.
accountCircle Amy L on January 29, 2022
The Cruze looks nice and has nice features but is not reliable.
I have had to replace my transmission after hitting 60, 000 miles. I have replaced my battery, and consistently have random electrical problems that come and go. I loved the car a first but have had nothing but problems with it. I would not recommend the Chevy Cruze to friends or family.
accountCircle Kirk R on June 14, 2021
Can see why Chevy no longer produces Cruze.
The thermostat went out which caused the air conditioning to fail. The coolant system also had to be replaced. The OnStar system wasn't very dependable as it never gave accurate directions. The hands-free calling is iffy at best. I have also have had to replace the brake pads twice.
accountCircle Jenn P on March 7, 2022
The Cruz is a mid-size money pit.
I am still paying on it, and have had major repairs that were paid out of my pocket just as the warranty expired. Burning oil, vacuum leaks, bad mass airflow sensor, the list goes on. I am only at 70k miles and was perfect with oil changes and other scheduled maintenance.

Do not waste your money on a cruise.
Engine light sensor issues. Sensor and remote issues. Good on gas. Right back seat rides rough. Good stereo, large trunk space. Bad blind spots, cheaply made. Good first starter car. Not long-distance. Window mechanical issues, airbag recall. No arm room.

Chevy Cruze-the lemon of all cars.
I have had nothing but issues out of my car. The check engine keeps coming on, but the issue cannot be located. The turbo boost went out in it-$1500. Several sensors and other parts have been replaced numerous times—$600-$700. Do not get a Chevy Cruze.
