There are three common problems with the transmission of the Nissan Titan XD: Premature transmission failure, overheating, and slipping with unusually hard shifting. A design flaw in the radiator can cause some transmission failures on the Titan: this is because the tranny pumps ATF fluid forward to the radiator, where a chamber allows it to release the heat it's absorbed. When this passage cracks, which it has a tendecy to do, it allows antifreeze to mix with the tranny fluid. The resulting contamination then wreaks havoc on the tranny, seals and even the clutch. The stock radiator also isn't capable of removing enough of the heat to prevent the tranny from overheating, which can severely damange the clutches, bands, seals and other parts. To try to prevent this, You can install an auxiliary transmission cooler. Finally, a failed solenoid or worn transmission bands can cause slipping on the 4-5 shift, and there is a tendency towards harsH2-3 shifts due to a worn clutch pack.
