The handbrake on a VW Golf MK6 is a manual cable driven brake system that is set using the handle found in the center console area. When this handle is pulled up it pulls a metal cable that runs to the rear caliper and which sets the brake pads in contact with the rotor. It is a very simple system that does not have many problems reported. One issue to be aware of is that the system is actually semiAuto adjusting. Most people do not realize this and try to adjust it themselves manually and end up causing the brake to work improperly. The method you will use to start the adjustment is different based on the year and trim but most involve fully depressing the foot brake pedal and holding it in while you raise and lower the handbrake a few times in a slow constant motion.

The vw golf mk6 2014 handbrake problems can stem from the lines in the hand brake being severed, or the mechanical arm of the brake being broken

To reply to Darrell V - The mk6 was only made until 2012 so if the cars is 2014 it must be a mk7 (newer gen)
