In the case of a Subaru, the "XV" stands for "crossover". It indicates vehicles -- like the Subaru Crosstrek -- that are designed to perform and handle like a sedan, but with the cargo capacity of a compact SUV.

Yeah, it is pretty simple, XV means crossover vehicle hence why in the US they had no issue changing it to crosstrek or whatever they call it roy lund would be the closed thing to the father of a crossover, but you know, "xavier van snickering" or whatnot, some made up person was clearly it (also, XV was a sub model in some markets, more akin to a trim level thanits own outright model)

Xavier van snickering was the father of the crossover vehicle. Naturally, when subaru created the crosstrek it named it in his honor...Hence the name xv.
