The 2007 Cadillac STS comes in a two of four different configurations -- across which, two different engines are offered. You may have either the 3.6L V6 or the 4.6L V8. While both vehicles require the use of the same SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil, the smaller V6 engine needS6.0 quarts and the larger V8 requireS8.0 quarts. In either case, it's possible to substitute SAE 5W-40 over the short term. This, however, isn't advisable; and it's certainly not recommended over the longer term. This is because using oil with a higher weight than recommended can lead to the introduction of friction into the system, and especially in colder climates, will cause premature wear and tear. This will cause Your engine to fail sooner than it otherwise would, so it's always best to go with the manufacturer's recommended oil with the lowest weight, even if it costs a bit more.
