The 2009 Subaru Forester came standard with a 2.5 L 4Cylinder engine across all trim levels. If You need to replace this engine You're looking at spending between $3500 and $4000 just in the parts. This job is very involved and it's going to be out of the skill set for most owners so if You take it in to a shop to have this job done You're looking at spending between $5000 and $7000.

I can vouch for this. Mine was almost $8k at a small local shop in Austin, TX. Anything Subaru is an expensive repair because the engines are just built silly. I can some of the work myself, but anything I can’t has cost me a limb every single time. My recommendation, don’t buy a Subaru…really.
