The Volkswagen Golf Mk4 uses SAE 5W-40 oil in the engine. Volkswagen recommends that You use synthetic oil whenever You need to change it in Your car as well. There are two types of oil that are common these days, synthetic and conventional. Synthetic is a newer type of oil that is designed to last longer in Your engine and give You better wear protection compared to the petroleum-based conventional option on the market. That means You can go 7,500 miles between changes with synthetic compared to the 3,500 to 5,000 mile interval with conventional. I suggest that You check Your oil at least once a month. During this check You will want to make sure that it is full and free from signs of damage.
