When it comes to stylish cars with plenty of personality, the 2006 Pontiac G6 is in a league of its own. And when you’re looking for something with powerful performance to-boot, you can’t go wrong with the range-topping GTP trim.

What do you need to know about the 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP trim?

This model is designed with performance in mind, starting with its 3.9L V6 engine at 240 horsepower. From there, the GTP also receives a standard stability control system to take your driving experience even further.

Ready to dive deeper into all this peppy little car has to offer? Learn more about the 2006 G6 below, as well as how it compares to the top-tier GTP trim.

More about the 2006 Pontiac G6

The Pontiac G6 is classified as a midsize car, having made its debut for the 2005 model year. It was designed to replace the Pontiac Grand Am, which was quickly aging out and losing interest around this time.

While the G6 debuted as a sedan, 2006 was the first year it was offered in both coupe and convertible body styles as well. This year also marked the introduction of a brand new available V6 engine, although a 2.4L four-cylinder (167 horsepower) remains standard.

On the mid-tier GT trim, the new 3.5L V6 engine (201 horsepower) was offered as an upgrade when this vehicle was sold new. Regardless of trim, every 2006 G6 comes with standard front-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic transmission.

What else is standard on the 2006 Pontiac G6? Let’s start with power accessories, a CD player, and air conditioning. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat is also standard on the sedan, allowing for easy expansion of the already large 14-cubic-foot trunk.

Cargo space on the coupe and convertible models is less generous at 2.2 cubic feet, so this is something to keep in mind as you shop.

What Sets the GTP Trim Apart?

For the everyday driver, either the base or mid-tier GT trim on the 2006 G6 may be enough to satisfy. But if you have a need for speed, you may want to step up your game to the performance-oriented GTP trim instead.

This trim receives the most powerful engine available on the 2006 G6: a 3.9L V6 engine at a head-turning 240 horsepower. This engine comes with the standard four-speed automatic transmission but was also offered with a six-speed manual when sold new.

Meanwhile, the GTP also receives a standard stability control system, which can help you get the most out of your driving experience.

The GTP can be found in every body style (sedan, coupe, and convertible) to suit your tastes and also comes with upgrades that include a sport-tuned suspension and 18-inch wheels to take your ride to new levels of excitement.

Inside the cabin, you and your passengers will also enjoy standard automatic climate control for added comfort. Some models were also equipped with remote start and satellite radio when sold new, so keep an eye out.

While you’re probably not buying a G6 GTP for the fuel economy, you can still expect an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined (16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway) on this model, which is in line with its competitors.
