The 2014 Ram 1500 can be a powerful vehicle with the ability to handle some of the toughest situations. To function like this, this truck usually has a larger engine in it. To keep it working at its best, owners have to invest in the right type and amount of engine oil and change it frequently.

How much and what type of oil does the 2014 Ram 1500 require?

The Dodge Ram has several engine options. As a result, it needs a different type and amount of oil based on the engine type. Two engines, the 3.6L (219.9 ci), and the 5.7L (345 ci), require 5W-20 engine oil. The 6.4L (392 ci) engine requires 0W-40 oil. The amount ranges from 6 quarts for the 3.6L engine up to 7 quarts for the 6.4L and 5.7L engines.

Knowing the amount and type of oil you need is important, but it also helps to know a few more things about engine oil maintenance. We’ll provide you with a breakdown here to give you more insight. You’ll also want to check out more maintenance help by checking the 2014 Ram 1500’s Vehicle History.

What You Should Know About Your 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Vehicle

The 2014 Ram 1500 is known for its reliability and solid function. This vehicle has nice interior space and provides a solid ride even though it can handle some tough road conditions with ease. Depending on the trim option you choose, it also provides up to 10,450 pounds of towing capacity.

The Ram 1500’s engine options for this year are something to love as well. There were three engine options available, with a powerful V-6 on them, with upgradable options. The turbodiesel engine option was first released this year. It helped the truck reach a better level of fuel efficiency, something that’s been a drag on full-size pickup trucks for years.

Check out this video on the turbodiesel engine.

The Ram 1500 is a vehicle you can rely on, if you keep the engine in good working condition. The three engine options offered included:

  • 3.6L V6 engine capable of 305 horsepower at 6350 rpms and 269 lb-ft. at 4,800 rpms
  • 5.7L V8 Hemi MDS engine capable of 395 horsepower at 5,600 rpms and 410 lb-ft. at 3950 rpms
  • 3.0L (182 ci) V6 EcoDiesel engine capable of 240 horsepower at 360 rpms and 420 lb-ft. at 2,000 rpms

The best fuel economy comes from that 3.0-L EcoDiesel engine. The EPA estimates on it were 19 city and 26 highway, for a combined 22 miles per gallon. That’s slightly better than the other trucks getting between 17 and 19 combined miles per gallon.

What Type of Oil Does the 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Take?

Auto Mechanic Pouring An Oil

It’s always a good idea to invest in the right type of oil for any vehicle. In the powerhouse engines on the Ram 1500, you really do need to ensure you get the right amount of oil in place. Not doing so could end up costing you in the long run, including leading to damage to the engine and transmission.

The best place to find your vehicle’s maintenance and upkeep needs is in your owner’s manual. There’s an important reason for mentioning this. If you fail to change your oil frequently enough or you don’t put in the right type of oil, it can impact the performance of the engine. It can also mean your warranty for repairs related to these components may not be honored. That’s a costly mistake.

The 2014 Ram 1500’s owner’s manual states the vehicle’s needs. Be sure to choose the owner’s manual for your trim and engine type. Each engine potentially has a different type of requirement.

Here’s a breakdown of what type of oil the 2014 Ram 1500 needs:

  • 3.6L engine requires 5W-20 oil
  • 5.7L engine requires 5W-20 synthetic motor oil
  • 3.0L engine requires 5W-40 oil

The viscosity of the oil helps it move through the engine and provides just the right amount of lubrication. If this is not the right oil, it can lead to the parts in the engine rubbing together. It may also clog key components if the weight of the oil is too heavy.

How Much Oil Does the 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Need?

The amount of oil you put into the vehicle will change based on the truck’s engine as well. You need just enough oil to move through the engine and transmission to keep the right movement present.

Here’s what the owner’s manual for the vehicle says about the amount of oil necessary:

  • 3.6L engine requires 5.9 quarts of oil
  • 5.7L engine requires 7 quarts of oil
  • 3.0L engine requires 10.6 quarts of oil

Avoid overfilling the oil. Doing so could cause your vehicle’s engine to spill oil, increasing the risk of a fire.

How to Check the Engine Oil on the 2014 Dodge Ram 1500

The 2014 Ram 1500 requires oil changes once every 5,000 miles if you use conventional oil. If you use synthetic oil, you may not need to change the oil until 7,500 miles or more. Your vehicle will monitor the oil life and provide an indicator on your dash when the oil needs to be changed.

In between oil changes, you should check the oil level. Doing so ensures the engine is not burning off oil and that there’s no leak. Here’s a video to help you check the oil:

The process involves removing the dipstick located under the hood. Wipe it clean and then look at the bottom few inches. There are two dots present. Your oil level should be between this area. Replace the dipstick, pushing it all the way in. Then pull it out again. This displays the current level of oil. If it is low, you may need to add more to it.
