2015 Jeep Patriot Problems Include Steering Fluid Leaks, Engine Stall, Airbag Investigations, and Low Safety Scores

The 2015 Jeep Patriot is a fun, rugged, outdoorsy adventure vehicle, and a poor choice for a family SUV, owing to big repair bills, poor crash test ratings, and an underwhelming assortment of safety tech and equipment. It’s hardly a lemon, but it’s not a great grocery-getter, either.

Key Points

  • The 2015 Jeep Patriot‘s sole recall was for an incorrectly positioned power steering hose clamp, leading to stiff steering and even potential fires.
  • While the vehicle doesn’t have a ton of engine problems, it does show a pattern of sputtering, stalling, and power loss.
  • There are currently two ongoing investigations into the vehicle’s airbags, with a handful of complaints on record.
  • Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the vehicle a subpar score for front driver-side impact.
  • The safety features on board are underwhelming, even for a vehicle from 2015. Don’t expect a backup camera, lane-keep assist, or collision warning.

2015 Jeep Patriot’s Recall for Incorrectly Positioned Power Steering Hose Clamp May Lead to Stiff Steering and Engine Fires

The 2015 Jeep Patriot’s sole recall concerns an incorrectly positioned power steering hose clamp. In affected models, the incorrectly-installed clamp has a tendency to come loose, resulting in the detachment of the low-pressure return hose.

The obvious problem here is that if something goes wrong with the power steering system, then you might find yourself unable to make a turn or switch lanes in time when out on the highway. Less obvious, but potentially even more dangerous: the leaked fluid is flammable, so it poses a fire hazard.

A number of complaints for power steering fluid leaks have been registered with the NHTSA since the recall went into effect. There is no telling whether the majority of these cases involve vehicles that were not included in the recall, or the driver didn’t get the notification, or they simply neglected the necessary repairs.

Sputter, Stall, and Sudden Power Loss Lead a Host of Engine Troubles

There are 84 engine complaints on file with the NHTSA, and many of them follow a theme of sudden power loss.

In some instances, this may be reported as sputtering, while in others, the rpm drops to zero out of nowhere, often leading to engine stall, but sometimes immediately correcting when the driver hits the gas.

These complaints aren’t numerous enough to be deeply concerning, and they are apparently not numerous enough to have generated an investigation or a recall as yet, but they’re common enough to be worth taking note of.

The 2015 Patriot is Currently Subject to Two Open Airbag Investigations, With a Handful of Worrying Complaints on File

Airbag complaints for the 2015 Patriot are few, tallying just 14 with the NHTSA. But a pair of open investigations into the SUV’s airbags may be worth taking into consideration. The first of these is for potential electrical overstress in the airbag control unit, and the second is for an inflator rupture.

Both of these investigations are still in the early stages, and it could be years before they wrap up. Currently, the Office of Defects Investigation is simply gathering data to determine whether a recall may be necessary.

Some of the airbag complaints for the vehicle are worrying, with one driver reporting that not a single airbag deployed in a major accident, and another stating that the airbag spring in the steering wheel has failed. But, with only fourteen complaints on file, the rate of incidence is pretty low.

Subpar Crash Test Scores May Be Cause for Concern if You’re Looking for a Safe Family SUV

The NHTSA has no overall safety rating on the record for the 2015 Patriot, owing to the vehicle not having been tested for side impact. But they gave the SUV an overall front rating of three stars out of five, and the same for rollover.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety test was a little more flattering, with ratings of “G” for good (essentially a five-star score in the IIHS rating system) in most categories, but a glaring “P” for poor (their one-star rating) in front driver impact.

Missing are many of the safety features we’ve all come to expect as standard equipment in newer vehicles. You won’t find a backup camera onboard the 2015 Patriot unless it’s an aftermarket addition. Likewise, no forward collision or lane departure warning.

To be fair, Jeep fans don’t expect these SUVs to match up to CR-Vs or Explorers in terms of safety ratings. It’s not a deal-breaker if this is going to be your weekend adventure vehicle, but if you’re thinking of buying a used 2015 Patriot as your family car, there are far better vehicles for the job.

2015 Jeep Patriot Still Makes for a Great Adventure Vehicle, but a Less-than-stellar Family SUV

The 2015 Jeep Patriot is nearing its first decade on the road, and while it’s not exactly plagued with major engine and transmission issues, the issues that are present will only be compounded by the vehicle’s advanced age and mileage in the next few years.

Between the vehicle’s advanced age, existing mechanical problems, and poor safety ratings, it’s simply not the most practical used SUV on the road right now. It’s still a lot of fun to drive, it’s still a durable camping-tripper. It’s just not the best choice for busy parents and professionals who simply need to get around town reliably.

2015 jeep patriot sport review.
Check engine light seems to be coming on quite often. After I took it in and had the service check it the gas cap needed to be changed out. I was told it happens when the cap just wears out, although the vehicle was only 2 years old. I have never had to have one replaced on any of my previous vehicles. The two things I am not happy with is that there does not seem to be enough power when speeding up to pass for instance, and stays at a high rpm for to long before winding down. As the vehicle is a 6 speed, but also automatic, it pops into manual position every so often when I have it in automatic! As far as comfort and features go, the driver's seat is a bit low for me (I am 5'5') and use a small pillow for extra height. There are no extra or special features as bluetooth or seat adjustments, but I guess this was just the standard version which I didn't realize and was a bit disappointed for the price I paid.

All around disappointment
I've owned and driven several Jeeps in the past. This one has left such a bad taste in my mouth I'll never buy another Chrysler or probably American vehicle ever again. Fuel economy freaking joke, it's ride on the road terribile, interior room is like a subcompact sedan oh, and it has all the defective parts that all Chrysler's have had going back to the late 90s. Like blend doors gears wearing out, electrical problems with the doors and the windows. At 77,000 miles I have a god-awful growling moaning noise not when I'm turning when I'm going straight down the road and it's the sign of this thing being the piece of s**t that I always thought it was. F**k you Jeep Dodge Mopar Chrysler all of them. Take your overpriced Wranglers and shove them up your a*s I'll never buy one of your vehicles ever again. Drop dead

Problems
It spends as much time in the shop for repairs as it does on the road. First the tires needing replacement before their time, have replace 3 wheel bearings and two axels. The hardware holding heat shroud rusted off. The doors are very noisy when opening and have lubricated many times. Warranty issues. This is my families 4th Jeep-probably the last. When taking in for service service managers don't listen to you even though I have had many years experience driving/repairing. Also have had the rear housing replaced due to gasket failure...Need I go on??

My grey slate 2015 Jeep Patriot should be colored brown for all the problems it has....
I have had a copious amount of mechanical problems with this vehicle. Being a V6, it has never had the power to run the AC and not make the engine feel like it is dying out. I have had issues with the low tire pressure light since I purchased it, brand new. I had it die on me twice; once in a parking lot and once driving on the interstate for no apparent reason other than it wanted to. Also after the first year, I could no longer switch the vehicle from hot to cold air without it giving me a headache full of problems.

Transmission issues in Jeep Patriots
It is quite small inside, practically no room after two car seats in the back. At 50,000 miles the transmission began to jerk at random times. Rear brakes are always needing to be replaced. I've replaced the rear brakes twice within 50,000 miles. The transmission is a sealed transmission therefore, nearly all tune up and fluid checks must be done at the dealership. These are all of the issues that I've notice thus far. But the vehicle only has 50,000 miles on it.

Disappointing experience!
For a jeep, it didn't last very long. A lot of problems after we bought the 2015 in 2016. Transmission issues, vent covers fell out of place, window washer fluid sprayer broken on one side for no reason. The key fob computer chip went bad. Cost us $200 for a new one, because the anti-theft prevented the car from starting.

Dangerous stalling while driving
My Jeep Patriot 2015 has around 51,000 miles on it. It has stalled while driving over a half dozen times. Just spent 1,700 dollars to fix a stalling problem where every review stated that this Jeep model has a stalling problem. The recall people says my vin number is not covered .Will be getting rid of this car real soon

2015 patriot issues
Bought the pat for my wife, she doesn't like it due to vibrations when stopped in gear. Vehicle was built around the engine making repairs difficult to do yourself or an expensive garage bill. Electrical system poor with warning lights on and no codes. Piece of FCA / private equity to maximize profit c**p. Do not buy!

There’s a reason they no longer make this model.
First three years was amazing. Once the third year came along it seemed like there were constant issues and once I fixed one problem another problem would arise. Now I am going on 5 years and the vehicle has been in the shop 2 in two month with total repairs equaling up to $3,000.

Stalling while driving
The Jeep Patriot 2015 is very dangerousto drive on the road. I have had at least half dozen time when the car has just sputtered and drive in traffic.. Just cast me over 1700 dollars and three weeks for them to find the problem. Will begetting rid of this real soon

Horrible car. Do not buy.
I have constant repairs on the electronics and sensors. They just continue to short out and break and it is an overall piece of garbage. The amount spent on this car during the time I was paying it off could've gone towards at least 2 down payments for nicer cars.

Jeep patriot hood and bad problems.
Have had many problems. I am always needing an alignment and I think that my tranny is going out on me. They say my back suspension something is bent in that causing it to not be able to get aligned. I tried replacing spark plugs solved my problem temporarily.
accountCircle Chris M on June 21, 2021
Cheap made and would not buy again.
Weak motor and transmission shifts hard from going to 2nd to 3rd. Already had to replace parts and the brakes sound horrible from the first day I bought it. It is good on gas but that is only plus about it.. I wouldn't buy any jeep or dodge product again.
accountCircle Stephanie T on February 17, 2022
It is basic, no touch screen, Bluetooth, GPS, etc.
I hate that my check engine light comes on about every other month. I dislike that my vents take a few minutes to start working. I dislike I cannot tow much.
accountCircle Dawn K on August 22, 2021
Save your money, it has not been worth a dime I have spent on the car.
It has no get up and go power. The transmission has very high ram's before shifting, during times you need the car to go(merging on the freeway).
accountCircle Cynthia B on August 25, 2021
Its does not save in gas.
Too much gas. Cosmetics breaking down. High mileage. Just want vehicle that saves in gas. Need a vehicle that does not use a lot of gas.

Review of the jeep patriot.
No abs, no AWD or 4x4 and overpriced. All SUVs should have 4x4 especially jeeps. No backup camera or Bluetooth or GPS.

Too expensive for the quality. Can get more from other brands.
Some of the interior materials are cheap. The general power of the Jeep is lacking.

Do not buy it, you will only be waiting your money
The car is small, it's not fun to drive, it has so many mechanical issues

The brakes are not good. The brakes have been screeching since I bought the car.
The brake pads screech since time of purchase. Wheels get flat often.

That this car is notorious for having problems with the racks under the car so be careful.
I dislike all the problems this car has costed me so far.
accountCircle Jeanne M on March 6, 2022
It is noisy, that can be distracting or annoying. It is a utilitarian vehicle.
Dislikes - it is noisy. It is slower than I like.
