2016 Ford Fusion

The 2016 Ford Fusion has a lot going for it, including a five-star crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and mostly Good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. But, persistent steering, powertrain, and structural problems make it a hard car to drive with confidence.

  • The 2016 Ford Fusion has nine recalls on file with the NHTSA, 916 complaints, and four investigations, two still open.
  • There have been three recalls for rollaway, with shortages being reported for the necessary parts for repair.
  • Issues with loose steering wheels and power steering failure persist despite recalls.
  • Loose seatbelts and fidgety door latches are among the most concerning structural complaints, but not nearly the only ones to worry about.
  • Despite a host of potential safety problems, the 2016 Fusion did earn excellent crash test scores from both the NHTSA and the IIHS.

There’s Seemingly No End in Sight for Rollaway Issues

A recall was issued in 2018 for unintentional rollaway due to a detached shift cable, and again in 2019, and again in 2022. The last recall was issued for nearly three million Fords, including 2013-2016 Fusions. Add that to those last two recalls and you have nearly four million notifications issued in total.

In all three recalls, the concern was that the cable bushing attaching the transmission shifter cable to the transmission itself could degrade over time, or even detach. Should that happen, the driver would be able to move the shift lever into park and remove the key without the car actually going into park.

And, if that were to occur, then you risk the car rolling down inclines or being bumped out of place if you were to be rear-ended or someone were to lean on the car. You can prevent rollaway by making sure to put the parking brake on, but it’s easy to forget to do that when you’re just running into the corner store for a minute.

Since the last recall went into effect, there have been a handful of complaints for parts shortages. If you’re shopping for a used Fusion it might not be a bad idea to check the VIN and make sure the repair has already been handled so you won’t have to sit around waiting for a new part to ship.

Steering Issues Persist Despite Two Recalls

2016 Ford Fusion

The 2016 Fusion was recalled in 2018 for a detached steering wheel, and in 2019 for a detached gear motor. In the first instance, a retaining bolt could come loose and the wheel might simply come loose in your hands. In the second recall, corroded bolts could lead to a gear coming loose and leaving you with no power steering support.

The first of these recalls was issued for over one million Fords in total, and the second for just over 100,000, including 2013-2016 Fusions among several other nameplates, with issues being more common in colder states where you’re going to be exposed to more road salt.

At 116 reports, steering issues are a leading cause for complaint among Fusion drivers, tailing behind powertrain complaints at 254 reports, and engine complaints at 246. A complaint issued in 2022 states that the steering wheel came loose and wiggled from side to side at 80,000 miles.

There have been dozens of complaints to this effect since the recalls were issued. Drivers report that the steering comes loose or goes out at times, suggesting that these recalls did not totally correct the steering issues. This alone may be reason enough for some buyers to skip the 2016 Fusion.

Loose Seatbelts and Door Latches Lead a Host of Structural Problems

A recall was issued in 2020 for over a quarter million Fords with loose door latches, leading to the doors swinging open while the car was in motion. A recall for over a half million Fords in 2016 addressed seatbelts snapping loose due to the friction of pretensioner deployment.

A handful of complaints and recalls point to structural issues elsewhere, as well. 39 units were recalled for a bad weld in the driver seat, 658 were recalled for fuel tanks liable to crack in a crash, and drivers have reported trunk lids popping open.

These complaints are all over the place, with 30 reports listed under structure, 14 under seatbelts, and 6 under seats, and several of the car’s 9 recalls pointing to general issues with the build quality of the vehicle. Altogether, it adds up to a car that may feel a bit cheap.

Ultimately, the problem here is that you probably won’t feel very safe driving a car where everything is coming loose and falling out of place and doors aren’t locking and trunk lids aren’t staying shut. If the parts you can see feel this cheap, what about the parts you can’t see?

The 2016 Ford Fusion Has Excellent Safety Ratings, But Doesn’t Feel Like It

2016 Ford Fusion

There are plenty of 2016 Ford Fusion owners who don’t have a single complaint to make about the car. But there are nine recalls on file, 916 complaints, and four investigations, two of them still open. Problems range from the serious, such as loose steering, to the minor-but-worrying, like loose trunk lids.

At the end of the day, the car just feels kind of chintzy. Add the vehicle’s history of faulty latches and bad welds and loose locks to the car’s age, hitting six years old as of the time of this writing, and you may have a hard time finding a 2016 Fusion in decent shape in the first place.

Problem after problem
I bought a 2016 Ford Fusion in April of 2017. Right after the two year warrant mark all my problems started (of course). First my shift linkage bushing broke. I watched few YouTube videos on how to fix it. YouTube we very helpful I bought the parts needed, attempted to fix it but the shift linkage bushing required for my vehicle did not fit. Then I found out upon more research that my car was on recall for steering wheel issues as well as the shift linkage bushing! So I took it to a Ford dealership on June 24th. They fixed it as far as I know BUT as of August 11th MY AIr conditioning system just stopped working....when the setting is on air cool air. I can feel a tiny stream of air if I putmy hand up to the vent. But not matter how high I turn the air, it does not change. Same with the heat. If I turn the heat on full blast, nothing comes out. I am unsure of what could be causing this. I need help desperately!

Abysmal Engine, many TSBs
Ecoboost engines have SEVERAL TSBs. I did not find out until P0302 codes have been randoming popping engine lights, after warranty expired (64000 miles now). Many TSBs list intake manifold bolt loosening and corrosion inside coolant lines, all just from P0302 code for #2 piston misfiring from coolant leaking in. Ford would not give ANY alternatives except pay for a whole new engines; no header/gasket option, no manifold or any part replacement choice. They are robbing me of $5500 for them to replace engine, after denying warranty extension. Going for ANY other non-Ford shop mechanic's options to keep it going for my family until my military deployment. Recalls are not happening soon, will report to Dept of Transportation.

EVERYTHING
I purchased a Ford Fusion (2016) two months ago and it's driving me CRAZY. First I hit a pothole dodging another pot hole and the right BUMPER came loose. Now I get up this morning and it's running HOT. What's going on with this car? Is there a recall on it? It's gonna cost me $1000 to fix the bumper because the sensors were knocked loose with the bumper. It seems that there should be a warranty on it but it's not. WHAT THE *@*@?

Piece of c**p
Coolant leak into engine SAME AS RECALLED 2013, 2014, 2015. SAME ECOBOOST COOLANT LEAK. First they told me they pressure tested it 4 times and nothing is wrong. Then I took it back and golly, its leaking coolant into the engine and told me I can still drive it. So when I die in a car fire my family can take FORD to court and ask why didnt you recall all of the defective engines?

Fusion: Not the best car!
The vehicle problems is that the steering is not as adjustable as it should be. The base model will not Sync with more up to date tech. The sync always goes out so does the rear camera. The sites are not as controllable as they should be. The car within itself states that it is a mid level sedan but it does not have any room at all.

My vehicle is super unreliable and is not family-oriented or safe.
It does not feel like a safe and reliable vehicle at all. I have constant issues with my breaks and it takes up a lot of gas. It is not economical at all. It is a basic vehicle with a GPS system that seems to be super buggy, so I end up using my iPhone for directions, instead. I just generally am unhappy with this vehicle and ford.

Using the air conditioner daily affects the pickup.
I am a little disappointed with my car choice. It is not as good as I thought it would be. I have sync in my car and have never been able to use it because it will not sync with my phone. I have created the account and it still will not work. The car was part of a car rental fleet so I thing that might be part of the problem.

Never get Ford Fusion 2016
This is the worst car ever. It's only 3 years old I have had transmission problems, had to replace the battery, all 4 brakes & rotors all 4 tires as well. The car has no speed & drives awful, there has been 2 recalls on this model that I had to bring the car in to get fixed. I recommend do not purchase.

I do not know if I would recommend.
I feel it has many blind spots. The coffee warning comes up too often and is unnecessary. I do not like when I need to slightly move over the wheel makes it difficult. The light tan seats do not keep its color, smudges are difficult to remove. I am not sure I would really recommend.

Falling apart within 1 year.
The automatic seat broke within the first month and is not covered by warranty. All of the interior lining / carpet lifted from the floor in the front seats (not covered) and the shift linkage broke unexpectedly within the first 7 months- also not covered by my warranty.

Broken Sync
My 16 fusion has always had a condensation problem inside the car in winter. And now the sync system doesnt work. Car only has 43000 miles and has been well cared for. Just wish it would have held up longer. 30000.00 car that has been greatly devalued. Sickening!@

C**p car
2016 , has 63,000 miles. Coolant leaked into engine. Ford says I need to pay for a new engine $6 - $8,000. Same defect as recalled 2012-2015s. Because It was over 60,000 miles Ford Fuson Ecoboost. I'm making payments on a car I thought was reliable, but Noooooooo!

Ford Fusion review--transmission issue?
The main issues I have is the transmission issue (transmissions in Focuses and Fusions are not the best, we have replaced one so far) and the size between the 2013 model and 2016 model is very different. It is more the size of a Ford Taurus now.

Defects known to Ford
Coolant leaks into engine same as recall years but Ford refuses to acknowledge. Told by Ford mechanics buy a new engine for 6-8 thousand dollars- Ford wants me to pay for their defective parts. No way. I will advertise all over the U.S. And uK.

Electrical system sucks
Rear camera started acting up for a few months and now won't work at all. Tall of te auxiliary power outlets stopped working, even after fuses changed. Now the wheel bearing seems to be going out.

Looking forward to the end of the lease.
The paint quality is terrible. Scratches are made inside and out so easy. Not happy with the seat, the lumbar part does not come out far enough to be felt on my back. The car has no pickup.
accountCircle Dawn H on December 3, 2022
Poor handling. If you want to make sure your family is safe in the car...this IS NOT the car you want to buy
The car handles poorly, feels like it skips to the side when you hit bumps. It is like driving on ice when it is raining. Feels like the car is on balloons. Bluetooth is unreliable.
accountCircle DerrikRodriguez on December 3, 2022
Dont buy it
The car sucks everything about it i regret buying it
