Kia has a better-than-average track record when it comes to recalls, bringing around four cars in for repair for every five sold. On the other hand, the industry average is a little higher than one to one. As a driver, you have to expect at least some recalls no matter what you’re driving. So with the 2016 Kia Sorento, there’s no exception.
How many recalls have been issued for the engine in the 2016 Kia Sorento?
The 2016 Sorento has six recalls listed with the NHTSA, mostly concerning several basic working-out-the-kinks issues. What do we mean by that?
Well, in this case, the following:
- Inadequate welding
- Brake lights
- Seat belt failing to latch
One recall was directly related to the engine. Another was tangentially connected to the engine. And besides these recalls, there have also been a number of engine complaints worth reading.
Vehicle Unable to Accelerate
NHTSA Recall ID: 15V089000
Affecting an estimated 12,361 Kia Sorentos manufactured from October 27, 2014 to January 29, 2015, this recall saw the Sorento unable to accelerate. This appeared to be an engine problem, but actually concerned improperly soldered components in the accelerator pedal assemblies.
In a worst-case scenario, this could leave the driver unable to accelerate at a critical moment, leading to a higher risk of being involved in an accident. That’s what you’re risking if you leave this recall unaddressed.
Kia issued notifications to owners on February 19, 2015 under the recall number SC115 and began repairs, which included replacing the accelerator assemblies in the affected cars.
High-pressure Fuel Pump Leakage
NHTSA Recall ID: 18V907000
Affecting a potential 71,653 units, including several 2011-2017 Optimas, 2011-2018 Sportages, and 2012-2017 Sorentos, this recall had to do with an engine replacement issued under the Knock Sensor Detection System Improvement Campaign, but not currently listed as a safety recall with the NHTSA.
The replacement procedure may have knocked the high-pressure fuel pump out of place, resulting in fuel leaking through the engine.
This could be a major fire hazard if left unattended. At the very least, this is going to result in wasted fuel.
Kia issued notifications on January 17, 2019 under the recall number SC172.
Engine Complaints
You should, of course, be aware of any open recalls concerning your car, but you should also be aware of common complaints concerning your vehicle.
You can check out registered complaints at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. At present, the NHTSA has 73 complaints listed under the “engine” keyword, and one listed under “engine and engine cooling.”
What the NHTSA is looking for in official complaints is patterns. Once enough owners come forward with the same complaint, they can launch an investigation and possibly issue a recall.
One pattern that emerged through complaints with the NHTSA: The check-oil light doesn’t seem to be coming on as the engines burn through the motor oil. Therefore, owners aren’t being warned when the oil is low, and as a result, their engines are stalling.
If you’re experiencing any issues with your Sorento, register a complaint with the NHTSA. You’ll be helping yourself, and you’ll be helping to make the roads safer for everyone.
