2016 Nissan Sentra Problems Mostly Relate to a Troublesome Continuously Variable Transmission

The 2016 Sentra is a popular compact sedan thanks to its reasonable price and long list of standard features. However, there are some common issues and serious safety risks over flawed airbags and defective transmissions that should be considered before purchasing a used model.

Key Points

  • 2016 Sentra owners received an extension of their original warranty over faulty transmissions as part of a settlement. Repair expenses were also reimbursed.
  • There are several complaints and recalls for electrical problems on the 2016 Nissan Sentra, including failing brake lights and a poor connections between the engine harness and airbag system.
  • The passenger airbag also suffers from issues related to the inflator and occupant identification system. There are recalls for both issues which could pose a safety threat if not addressed.
  • Ultimately, the 2016 Nissan Sentra is a fine sedan with a somewhat problematic CVT. Compared to key rivals, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, the Sentra has far fewer recalls and registered complaints.

Nissan Sentra’s CVT Was the Subject of a Class-action Lawsuit Over Sudden Shaking, Lack of Throttle Response

Nissan has had quite a few problems with their Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) over the last decade. The 2016 Nissan Sentra was one of many vehicles that were included in a class-action lawsuit for failing transmissions.

The lawsuit was filed in 2018 and alleged that the CVTs in Nissan Sentra, Juke, and Versa models had a defect that could lead to sudden shaking and jerking while the vehicle was being driven. Many owners also complained that their vehicles were unable to accelerate at a reasonable speed or move under their own power.

A settlement was reached in 2019, which resulted in owners receiving an extension of their original powertrain warranty to 84 months or 84,000 miles. They were also eligible to have their repair expenses reimbursed.

Prospective buyers of 2016 Sentras should pay close attention to how the transmission is functioning during a test drive, and look closely at the vehicle’s service history to see if the transmission has had regular fluid changes or was replaced. There is an easy way to avoid these issues altogether: Opt for a 2016 Sentra with the six-speed manual transmission.

2016 Sentra has a Number of Electrical Problems, Like Failing Brake Lights, and the Engine May Run Rough Over a Bad ECU Connection

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), of 165 complaints about the 2016 Nissan Sentra, 90 are related to an issue with the electrical system or the powertrain. Though some of the powertrain-related complaints are targeted at the transmission or other issues, many describe a no-start condition or other electrical issues.

Nissan issued a recall on 2016 Sentras over an engine harness that may have a terminal pin that is too large to maintain a connection with the engine control unit. This could lead to the engine running rough, shutting off intermittently, or not starting at all.

If you are looking at a 2016 Sentra model that was covered by this recall, the vehicle service history should note that this recall was performed.

Another recall for an electrical issue on the 2016 Sentra was related to faulty rear brake lights that may not illuminate, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall affects 2016-2019 Sentras and was issued in March of 2021.

Airbags May Not Deploy Properly in 2016 Sentra Due to Faulty Sensor or Bad Wiring, with Malfunctioning Brake Lights Also a Safety Threat

The front passenger airbag poses a big problem for the 2016 Nissan Sentra. Four of the model year’s six recalls relate to the same front airbag malfunction that may occur due to a number of reasons.

A reported manufacturer error and an issue with bad wiring potentially disconnecting the front passenger airbag are just two possibilities of why the unit may not work properly.

There is also an issue with the front airbag’s sensor incorrectly identifying adult and child passengers and thus miscalculating seat occupancy and how to respond in a crash. All of these problems could result in the airbag deploying improperly or not opening at all in a wreck.

Another recall also addresses a threat to safety, especially when driving at night, due to the possibility that some 2016 models may have bad brake lights that fail to illuminate.

2016 Nissan Sentra is a Reasonably Reliable Sedan with a Fickle CVT

In total, the 2016 Nissan Sentra has six recalls and 165 complaints registered with the NHTSA. This compares favorably to the Sentra’s two biggest rivals, the Honda Civic (three recalls and 621 complaints) and the Toyota Corolla (one recall and 180 complaints).

The Sentra has been a popular option for compact sedan buyers for over 30 years. The 2016 model has some noted issues but is still a solid pick for buyers seeking a reasonably priced compact sedan that offers good fuel economy and an impressive list of standard features.

The 2016 Sentra’s biggest trouble spot, the CVT, is a well-documented issue and preventive maintenance in the form of regular fluid changes can go a long way. You can also avoid the issues with the CVT entirely by picking up a Sentra with the standard six-speed manual transmission, which will also require less service over the vehicle’s life.

Nice price horrible transmission.
The transmission is trash, the vehicle is a small sedan which in most cases is a gas saver, but in this case, the gas to mileage ratio is horrible. I will never purchase another. The sensors do not work appropriately for example there is no check oil sensor. My car's transmission went completely out before the check engine light came on. The rearview camera is pretty nice I guess. That is probably the only positive thing that I have to say about it.

Bad at inclines great commuter car.
I am a taller person (6’3”) so the seating position can be annoying on longer trips as well as the CVT transmission paired with an already gutless engine inline 4 is not great for steep inclines but otherwise typically gets 30 miles to the gallon. Great flat ground commuter city car, bad if going up steep freeways and highways.
accountCircle Nathan W on December 21, 2021
My vehicle was cheap and not made with good parts.
It is known for transmission problems and the body is too low to the ground and scrapes anytime you go up a driveway. I also have had problems with the headers on the car. The header got a crack in it for no reason. I believe the Altima is a nice car but to have so many problems for no reason and the warranty is no good.

Safety Issues Because Of Constant Manufacturer Defects
I don't recommend Nissan Sentra at all, my 2016 model Sentra gave me enough trouble in the last 2 years and the worst performance, very worst dealer. Every problem that occurred in my car was because of a manufacturer defect. Very worst Automatic gear, throttle body needs to be replaced once in every 6 months....

Do not purchase anything for Nissan because they will not honor warranties.
This car has transmission problems it's not very reliable and my advice is not to ever purchase a Nissan. I have had the vehicle since 2016 the transmission had to be replaced and now it seems to be failing again. The interior of the vehicle is not durable a lot of the vinyl on the doors are coming apart also.

Nissan Sentra car maintenance review.
Lower motor mount replacement, alignment issues, bad acceleration, constantly have to get the air filter replaced, I recently had an issue with the right front hub, the car is still wobbly. I purchased my vehicle from the dealership and the upkeep is so unbelievably pricey, the cars are made very cheap.

Nissan's are the worst cars ever! They're cheap, and the quality is horrible.
Not reliable! Always have issues with this car. It was brand new when I purchased it and I was having problems then. It shakes all the time. The rims are peeling. The bottom rubber thing came off. The visor broke. The gear lights do not work anymore. Worst cars ever! Do not purchase a Nissan!

Why I wouldn't buy a Nissan
The Axle and suspension are not good, they tend to have a lot of recalls on these vehicles, they are gas efficient, the body style is big for no reason, the shocks are not good you feel everything. I have the 2.5 SV but it's overrated. If I could do it all over again I wouldn't buy a Nissan
accountCircle Corey M on March 25, 2022
I wouldn't recommend buying this car again
The performance of this vehicle is poor and has transmission issues around 60,000 miles. We tried to get it replaced and Nissan wouldn't replace it when it was only 2 years old and in a warranty, but they ended up doing a 'goodwill' replacement and only fixed a part of the transmission.

Overall cheaply put together vehicle.
About 2 weeks after I bought it I noticed some rust spots on the trunk running from the chrome. The carpeting was cut too short and there is a gap on each side. I only got 27 000 miles on my tires. My doorknob on the driver's side is broken. Overall very cheaply put together vehicle.

Issues with 2016 Nissan Sentra.
The windows roll down every time I hit the lock button on the key fob. I do not like the fact that the radio is more for apple and not android. I cannot use my navigation system because it does not have the SD card. The car lights are not that bright. The car handles really good.

Small gas tank. Saves money on gas.
I wanted something reliable and safe. When I first purchased this vehicle, it was great on gas, had no problems. After almost a year, it started wasting more gas. The door's rubber started coming off by itself. The radio keeps cutting off. The Bluetooth does not always connect.

My car honks when you put air in the tires.
When I first got the car it was great, now it is becoming louder when it runs and getting shaky as it drives. It gets me from point a to point b but I wish it was still the car I first purchased. I do not mind the car, I take care of it but it is still wearing down quickly.

Bad transmissions, untrustworthy car.
Bought it used. Exactly one year to the day that I bought it the transmission went. Thank god it was still under factory warranty but I will never trust it or any Nissan again. This is my first Nissan and definitely my last. The only good thing was they gave a free rental.

Let me tell you about my Sentra.
My car will just die while I am driving it will jump it go a few blocks and it does the same also lots of electrical problems. All Sentra owners I have talked to have the same problem have had to fix mass airflow two times and the factory alarm gives me lots of problem.

I got screwed
I bought a 2016 Nissan Sentra from the Fontana auto group in Bloomington they showed me a clean car fax and talked the car up so I went a head and got it that was a year and a half ago well now the transmission has gone out

Nissan Sentra 2016 review.
I have had issues with the seals on the doors multiple times and needed them replaced. The basic car with no upgrades, I feel is too basic would be nice to have a backup cam without having to pay thousands more.

Disappointed
Stylish car but that's about all I bought it new I've had my car 3yr has 67000 miles and the transmission is out, batteries going out often

Struggling With Acceleration
The car feels “cheap” when I drive it and makes weird sounds. It struggles to rev up and sounds like it is really struggling.
accountCircle Kevin C on August 10, 2021
It's not the car to get if you don't want any repair work
The CVT transmission went out at 50k miles, lots of others mechanical issues.

DO NOT BUY A NISSAN - ANY OF THEM
Awful transmission and it will be a money pit.
