A Full Rundown On The Notorious Ford Death Wobble

With a name like “Death Wobble,” it clearly can’t be good. This is the case with the Ford Death Wobble you may have heard about. You likely have a few questions about it, as it can be a possible safety hazard.

Are there any complaints with Ford suspension? Does Ford have any suspension recalls? What vehicle does the “Death Wobble” recall affect?

The so-called, “death wobble” issue affects Ford trucks, particularly the Super Duty and has been an issue for around 15 years.

There are currently no recalls for suspension in Ford trucks. Ford has, thus far, refused to address the issue.

Though Ford has refused to acknowledge that the death wobble is a real phenomenon, there have been thousands of complaints from drivers all around the world that have chronicled the issues with this occurrence. We will discuss it in greater depth in this article.

The death wobble is something that has been in the news and in complaints from drivers for the past 15 years. The issue is mainly with Ford Super Duty F-250 and F-350 trucks. The phenomenon is known as the death wobble and has to do with the suspension in the vehicle.

Drivers that have experienced it describe it as a violent shaking of the truck after the driver has hit a bump or a hole while they are driving at highway speeds.

This phenomenon is something that is not only scary, but that can also cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle and then have an accident. Drivers that have dealt with the issue say that it is harrowing and that they genuinely felt like they were going to die.

The main problem with this issue is that there are really no indicators prior to it occurring that there is any chance that it may happen.

Drivers that have experienced it are nearly always driving at highway speed, therefore very fast, and when the wobble begins it becomes so violent that they cannot control the wheel and they cannot keep the vehicle in their lane or even on the road.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has had over 1,000 complaints of the death wobble and the accidents that are caused by the event. Currently, Ford has not addressed the death wobble, they have not addressed the multiple complaints from drivers, and they have not addressed any possible remedy or repair for the issue.

Currently, there is no indication from the Ford motor company that they are intending to do anything about the issue. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration requested more time to investigate the issue and they have taken the complaints and compiled them.

The death wobble only happens when the vehicle is traveling over 50 miles per hour and it is often tipped off when the truck hits a bump or a hole in the road.

A similar issue was reported in Jeep Wranglers and Jeep answered that the death wobble is only common in vehicles that have worn out suspensions that needed to be replaced and were neglected. There is currently a lawsuit in process to sue Ford for not disclosing that there was an issue with the suspension and that it did not need to be repaired.

The class action lawsuit is currently open and Ford is working to dismiss it on the grounds that they did not seek to have the issue worked on before the factory warranty expired. It is claimed that they did not have any complaints before the four-year mark after purchasing the vehicle.

What Should you Do about the Death Wobble?

With an issue like the death wobble that is not a formal recall, there is not really anything that can be done in terms of taking your truck in for a recall. If you have a vehicle that has had the death wobble or you have been a victim of it, you can file a complaint with the NHTSA and may be able to file with the current lawsuit.

If you suspect that your vehicle might be going to experience the death wobble or you are having trouble with your suspension it is advised that the vehicle be inspected and repaired if possible. If your vehicle is still under factory warranty your warranty may cover the cost of repair.

Recalls are important and if you are dealing with this sort of issue it is important to make certain you have your car repaired. Your safety and the safety of others is paramount and proper care of your vehicle can help.

Almost died
2019 F250 I was driving on the highway this morning on the way to work doing over 70 mph. I felt like I hit a tiny bump in the road and all of a sudden the front wheels started shaking violently. I tried to tap the brakes like I had done in the past with my 2006 F250, but nothing was working. The truck was shaking so bad I couldn't barely see where I was going. I tried to hold the wheel as tight as I could to avoid flipping the truck. Thank God there was grass off to the side of the road so I jammed on the brakes and headed for the grass, just missing the guard rail. A police officer just happened to be on the highway behind me and when I stopped and got out of the truck he asked me what the heck I was doing. Then he could see how shaken and upset I was and realized something had happened. It's 3 hours later and I'm still extremely upset. Never will I buy an F250 again!

Death Wobble
I own a 2017 F250 crew with 53,000 miles. I have hear of the death wobble and never experienced it until last week. Driving on the highway, I experienced it 3 times over the course of 2 days. In all three cases, I hit a bump doing about 70 mph and the truck just started shaking violently. I slowed it down by letting of the gas and coasting toa slower speed before the vI ration stopped. The truck was taken to the dealer who replaced the steering dampener for free. According to the tech at the dealer, Ford recognizes the problem and is willing to replace the dampener for free up to 150,000 miles even if it wears out again (my VIN # was on the Ford list although not officially a recall). It seems to have solved the problem for now, but I wish Ford would address the issue with new “super duty” parts or overall design.

F250 Super Duty Death Wobble
2020 Ford has 27,000 miles, and I just experienced the "death wobble". I had no idea what was happening, and it was terrifying. The truck walked across into the left lane before I was able to get it under control. It happened on a regular paved road with no potholes or grooves--I know because I drive the same road several times each day and will never forget where it happened. This could have caused a very serious accident if the traffic had been heavier. Ford needs to address this issue. I had never heard of this until I searched to see what had happened to me. The shaking is intensely violent and difficult to control.

II own a 2016 F350 with 77367 miles on it, I purchased a new back in December 2015.On 12/17/2021 while driving 75 mph on interstate 45 in Texas my truck started to shake violently. I had to back it down to 40 mph to get it to stop, I had heard of the Ford death wobble but had never experienced it until last night. I am mediately called my local Ford dealership and I’m going to take it in on Monday. I just wanna make note of it.

Death Wobble on 2019 SD w/21,550 miles
I haven’t had any problems with my truck until this past week when I experienced the death wobble three different times on a 6 Hour d. It was absolutely terrifying, my truck walked Truck walked 8 feet across the lane into traffic and nearly killed me: I’m glad it walked one way and not the other or I’d have gone off a cliff. I have a Service appt with my dealer.

Death wobble
I bought this truck from a dealership in Jonesborough a bit North and Drove it for A-day and it started walking across the lane I was able to get the thing under control but it wouldn't stop till I was at 20 mile an hour speed. Never knew it was a life threatening problem till a day ago. Begging the dealer to take it back! Well see!

2011 Ford F-350
I have a 2011 Superduty, that just recently provided me w/ the death wobble scare on three different occasions. The truck only has 53,000 miles on it, has been pampered it's whole life. We have always owned Fords, I have never experienced anything this frightening or uncontrollable. Why wouldn't Ford corporation provide a recall?

Death Wobble for the 3rd time
Currently have experienced the Death Wobble for the 3rd time; 2 times fixed, currently back with no seeming sense of urgency to fix the issue. Vehicle is still under warranty and under a Recall Notice; neither seems to matter to the Ford local dealerships. 2017 Ford F 250 purchased new.

Death Wobble
Death Wobble typically is caused by worn tires that can be out of balance or dirt/snow inside the rims. Check these before blaming worn suspension parts, which can also cause an issue. I have driven Jeeps and GM pickups that had the same issue.
