All About The 2017 Honda CR-V Shifter Button Recalls

Honda recalled over 3 million cars in 2017, including many 2017 Honda CR-Vs. In total, at least 30,000 CR-Vs were recalled across three different issues.

There have been a lot of complaints regarding the CR-V’s shifter button, so the question you may have is: Did any of those recalls fix the button?

Let’s look and see what those recalls were:

  • Magnets may dislodge from the power steering system
  • Fuel supply pipe may come loose and cause a fuel leak
  • Certification labels may be incorrect

As you can see, the shifter button problem has yet to be addressed with a recall. There are several complaints about the shifter button on file with the NHTSA, but no investigation or recall as of yet.

Shift Button Comes off at Random

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11348918

In an incident dated July 4, 2020, a Woodside, California, driver attempted to shift from “Drive” to “Reverse” to back into their driveway, only to look down and find the shift button missing. They searched for the button and found it on the console, having fallen off while in “Drive.”

At the very least, this is an inconvenience. At the very worst, this affects the driver’s control over the car, and it may be disastrous in any situation in which they need to shift into or out of “Reverse” very quickly.

Shift Button Broke off and Became Unusable

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11340408

On June 5, 2020, a Leominster, Massachusetts, driver’s shift button popped off and became unusable. Whereas the previously mentioned driver was able to reattach the button, in this instance, the button’s plastic broke, making it impossible to reattach.

Once again, the safety concern here comes down to a loss of the driver’s control over their vehicle. And again, in the best-case scenario, you expect the basic components of your car to hold up a little better than that.

Shift Button Fell off

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11309056

In Queensbury, New York, on February 13, 2020, the driver had to put on their parking brake while on an incline and look for the shift button when it fell off.

It was the same story: At best, it’s inconvenient. At worst, it could increase the chances of getting into an accident when the shift button pops off at the wrong moment.

Broken Shift Button

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11292443

This complaint was filed on the incident date of January 1, 2020 in Columbus, Ohio. The shifter button fell off and wound up being too broken to reattach. The car now cannot be put into “Park.”

Sudden loss of control can be a danger, but being unable to put the car into “Park” means that you could easily see your car rolling down a hill if you forget to put the parking brake on.

Shifter Button Broken, Unable to Shift Into Reverse, Drive or Park

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11300518

In this instance, described on the incident date January 14, 2020, a McChord Air Force Base, Washington, driver saw the plastic breaking off inside the gear handle, leaving them unable to put the car into Park, Drive or Reverse.

The result: sudden loss of control, rolling down hills, and just a major pain in the neck.

How Do You Check a 2017 Honda CR-V for Recalls?

Right now we’re in “wait and see” mode. There are dozens of complaints on this particular subject, so if you’ve experienced this problem, file a complaint. The NHTSA can’t begin an investigation until they know there’s a problem.

The good news is that if there is a recall, you may be reimbursed by Honda for whatever you spent getting the repairs done yourself.

In the meantime, you can check your VIN, type it into the NHTSA recall lookup tool, and then call Honda at 1-888-234-2138 to have those recalls addressed.
