All About The Ford Explorer Water Pump Recalls

Wayne H
Jan 21, 2021

Usually, automakers catch most safety concerns before they leave the factory. However, sometimes things get missed, as is the case with the Ford Explorers water pump.

Have there been any water pump recalls on the Ford Explorer?

There are none as of now, but there have been some complaints related to it. Some of these include:

  • Water pump leakage
  • Water pump failed and damaged engine
  • Water pump inside engine mixing coolant and oil

Brown 2021 Ford Explorer In Motion

Ford Motor Company recorded the problems of many water pump issues, and Ford Explorer owners reported over several to Ford and several review companies. This article will mention how Ford worked to fix the consumers’ issues for those who had the water pump fail.

Water Pump Leakage

Ford Explorer models from 2011 to 2016 had the most water pump issues. Ford Explorer 2016 models had the most problems recorded than any other year. Consumers reported complaints with a few of all the models having leakage issues.

The loss of engine coolant through a leak in the water pump can damage the engine. Without the engine coolant, the motor will overheat and lock up, causing the consumer to purchase a new engine.

Ford Motor Company has repaired the issues when the consumer brings the vehicle in for service. No recalls have happened, so the customer has to pay for the repairs. By calling the nearest dealership, they can set up an appointment to repair what needs fixing.

Water Pump Failed and Damaged Engine

Car Water Pump With Water Splashes

The Ford Explorer 2011 models found some engines were stalling while in the process of crossing intersections. When the pump fails, the engine automatically shuts down with no warning.

If this issue goes unrepaired, an accident may occur while leaving a vehicle stalled out in a busy intersection. Engine damage is imminent.

Ford fixed the owner manuals to have the water pump checked after so many miles. After these issues occurred to many, Ford stopped building the water pumps inside the engine. There were no recalls, but class-action lawsuits made them fix the problem.

Water Pump Inside Engine Mixing Coolant and Oil

The Ford Explorer 2011 models saw instances where the water pump failed. Those engines have the water pump built inside the engine. When the pump fails, the coolant mixes with the oil shutting the engine down. A class-action lawsuit was issued, but there were no recalls.

If this issue goes unrepaired, the coolant and oil will mix, and the engine will need replacement.

A class-action lawsuit forced Ford to fix the problem.

Some of the vehicles had expired warranties, where Ford had to eat the cost. Only vehicles brought in for servicing got the repairs. Ford revised the engine to eliminate the problem after the 2011 editions.

What Do You Do if There is an Open Recall for a Ford Explorer Water Pump?

What do you do if your Ford Explorer has a recall for the water pump? Check out the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. You will need the VIN, year, make, and model to enter. It will let you know if there is an open recall for your vehicle history.

If the website shows there is a recall, contact Ford Motor Company at 1-800-392-3673. They will give you all the information you need to follow up on the recall.

2018 Ford Explorer XLT
Same issue as everyone else. I financed our 2018 Ford Explorer, 7 year financing so we still owe about $20,000 on it. 6 weeks ago I was driving the car when the temperature light came on. My husband met me and noticed the coolant was extremely low, so he filled it and we drove the car to our mechanic. Our mechanic had it for 2 days and said that the radiator cap was busted and he couldn't see any obvious signs of a leak. He replaced the radiator cap, refilled the antifreeze and sent us on our way. 4 weeks after that, my husband was driving home on a busy highway going approximately 45 MPH. All of the sudden, the check engine light blinked twice and the car SHUT OFF. Thankfully he was able to coast to the side of the road safely. We towed the car to our regular mechanic. He could not figure out what was wrong with it. We asked out our local neighborhood facebook page where another local mechanic asked for it to be towed to his shop, as he was confidant based off the information I provided that he could properly diagnose the car. We towed it there. A week later, the mechanic called saying he could not get the car started but said that this was a very known issue with Ford cars, he knew I needed a new water pump because there was antifreeze in the oil and could see a leak. When I starteddoing research, come to find out just how common an issue this is. I called the Ford Dealership who would confirm "off the record" that they are very well aware of the issue, but because my warranty expired in February and there is no current recall on the issue, I was basically SOL. They did then tell me that if there was antifreeze mixed in the engine, I would need a whole new engine. Bottom line, car is now currently with the Ford Dealership who is trying to work out the the Ford Customer Advocacy Program they have to see if they will help cover the cost of 40-60% of the engine. I dont have $4-6 thousand dollars just laying around let alone $10,000. To add insult to injury, Ford offered me a rental for $35 dollars a day. What a money making SCAM they have going on. They know their waterpumps are faulty. Continue to use them, they go at 60-80,000 miles and the consumer is stuck with the cost. My car has 73,000 miles on it.

2014 Explorer Water Pump - Defective Design Requires a Recall
I bought this as a Certified Used SUV with 44K miles from Santa Margarita Ford in August of 2018. I purchased an Extended Warranty, too. However, the Warranty was an inferior product and did not cover the failed hubs on my front end. When the Warranty expired, my water pump went out (@74K miles) and the hubs failed too with less than 20K miles on them. The repairs on the water pump & timing chain were over $3,500. The dealership advised me to contact Ford and seek financial assistance. However, that avenue is only open to vehicles under 7 years old. They knew better at Gosch Ford Temecula, but sent me chasing information that was not applicable. I contacted Ford's product Claim's Department by FAX & Priority mail, but they had yet to respond in 30 days. Today I placed my fourth call to Ford on this issue and they have only acted upon the dealership request from months ago, thus ignoring or dismissing my recent request for assistance. The CSR finally understood the issue and is creating a new complaint. Ford cannot comprehend that they have an issue with quality on their OEM parts and the poor design on the water pumps. When I asked about the next step in the process, the CSR said the folks reviewing the issue will make a determination. I asked how I would be notified of their decision. He stated, "You won't." When I asked how do folks receive feedback, he stated that he did not know. I finally got him to say that I must call the General number and as for a current status on my case #. What a friggin Circus!!!!

Ford Explorer 2013
Out of nowhere the red warning light comes on stating high temperature. Thank God I was on local street and was able to park and walk a few blocks to AutoZone; purchased engine coolant and poured it in. Thank God I called my mechanic who suggested bringing car in just to make sure. I knew something was wrong when the manager sat down next to me. He stated the problem was the water pump; the pump price was cheap; the 11 hours of labor wasn't: brings total to $2K. As I read all your comments and the article on the lawsuit, I'm mad. On top of receiving three or more recall ltrs from them and now a fourth recall for a "rear toe link fracture" part. My mechanic at another shop has a 2018 and he received a recall on the ski rack (it states it can fly off car). We've paid almost $500.00 per month since 2013 (leased 1st from 2013 to 2014); just paid it off 2021 and now this! After reading your comments- and especially the one person who replaced engine for 7k and now the pump is once again broken - this honestly makes me want to sell the car but I don't want anyone else getting our problems. Ford is responsible for all these water pumps and should have a recall. This is how I'll buy a car in the future: research "recalls" and problems on particular make and model bf making decision.

2013 Ford Explorer Water Pump
Now I have to say I got lucky with how long mine had lasted. Mine started leaking around 210,000 miles. To me, I figured that was a great run for a water pump. However, I was surprised to hear it was going to be a $2,800.00 price tag and I called BS. That was until I looked into it and realized you had to drop the engine, pull off the belt, harmonic balancer pulley, and pull the timing chain cover off the front of the block just to get to it! Dropping the engine was the fastest way to change it! Wow. Don’t stick it on the outside! So might as well check the seals and replace the timing chain equipment while we were in there since we were that far into it! So I guess it made sense why they charged so much with the work involved, but ouch! Still painful for a water pump replacement. Really, the worst design is the PTU or (Transfer case) is where it’s located. I’ve had to replace it once and rebuild it two other times. It overheats due to the catalytic converter right next to it and it’s not serviceable so the one quart of oil burns up, boils out, thus causing gear failure. With $3,000 dollars worth of converters and O2 sensors, this thing is still going and is still cheaper to operate than a new vehicle! Shooting for 300,000 miles now!! Wish me luck!

Why No RECALL with so many incidents?
2013 Ford Explorer. LOVED IT! But not any more! Purchased it used and 3 months into it it leaked, ever so slightly and 1 month later it overheated. Then 9 months later it leaked more and I had to stop driving it for fear I would blow the engine. I called Ford and I got the run-around and they gave me a claim # and said they would call me back...NOTHING. I called them, instead. They gave me the run-around again. Once they heard I was looking for FORD to pay for the work I had done, they started their evasion tactics. I.e. "accidentally" hanging up, loss of sound, and then passing me around in circles. I spent my entire lunch hour just trying to get someone on the phone. Terrible treatment. One representative even said because I had it fixed at a non-Ford mechanic that I could not get reimbursed. I asked her what did she expect me to do? Wait till they called me? Its my only vehicle and I needed to get it running again. It cost me 1.5 weeks of time and $2000 to repair. This is definitely an issue and why it is not a recall is beyond me. In Canada its a RECALL!! Why not here? They are getting away with an engineering snafu and we're paying the price. Shame on YOU, ford.

Class Action Lawsuit???
I am the original owner of a 2015 Ford Explorer XLT with only 70,000 miles on it. I noticed small leaks in the driveway and wherever I parked my car for a longer period of time. I was afraid to take it into the mechanics and now I know why. When he said it was the water pump/timing chain and how much it was going to cost me I almost lost it. He said that it is unusual to replace water pumps on vehicles with less than 100,000 miles on it but that the Ford Explorers are having a lot of issues with them and he even went so far as to look up any recalls on them. No such luck. I didn't even bother calling the Ford service center near me because I didn't have the bandwidth to deal with them. I had no choice but to get my car repaired so I left it at the shop, got a rental car (an extra expense), and picked up my Explorer yesterday after paying the $2600 bill. After finding this website and reading about how many people had to deal with the same thing, it is mind-blowing to me that there is not a recall on this or a class action lawsuit. Shame on Ford. I will never purchase another one again.

2017FORD EXPLORER WATER PUMP FAILURE
My wife's Explorer has less than 50k miles on it. That's not many miles for a 6 year old vehicle. It clean and very well maintained and looks new. The AC started blowing fuses after a couple of minutes of running but blew very cold air until then. I took it back to the dealership in North Richland Hills, Tx where it was purchased. They said the water pump had leaked onto the A/C compressor and it was burned up and needed both the compressor, clutch and water pump. I don't understand how an AC unit that is always exposed to the elements could fail from coolant but can see how the clutch might. In any event it looks like I'm going to be out hundreds of dollars for Ford's dumb-*SS engineering. Who in their right mind would put a water pump inside an engine. You would think they would have learned their lesson from all of the past water in the engine issues that all the U.S. Manufacturers have already dealt with. After 50 years of buying and driving Fords for my businesses and personal use I'm switching to Asian car companies.

Water pump and timing chain failure
My '13 Explorer (90k miles) is currently in the shop because this issue got me. Started out with a check engine light throwing a solenoid replacement, then I started losing coolant.Luckily I got it in before my engine seized up on me.This is 100% a manufacturer problem. Ford is hanging us out to dry. Canada agreed that this is Ford's fault and is making them pay. I'm not sure if they are paying for repairs or a class action lawsuit. But they have something.Come on Dept of Transportation. Your engine can seize up on you drive down the road. That's a safety issue. Ford has changed their water pump design!Isn't that an admission of guilt? If the didn't think it was an issue, then why change the interior water pump? So I'm facing a $3000 repair bill and will be trading in this POS and never buying a Ford again. That on top of the 2,746 recalls we've had on toe links and whateverelse but they wont recall the most expensive one. Shame on you Ford.

Water pump nightmare
I have a 2011 Ford Explorer, bought it new. It's been an amazing vehicle with very minimal issues, up until the water pump reared it's head. I didn't have a leak, I just got the check engine light and the truck immediately running VERY rough. I knew something was very wrong. My trusted mechanic called and told me it was the water pump and timing chain. I was so relieved! Having dealt with that repair on other vehicles, I knew it wouldn't be a horrific dollar amt. Until the mechanic told me that they needed to take half the engine apart to get to it, and quoted me $4380 to do the work. Only because I had the stimulus money was I able to do it. He said the junkyards of full of Explorers abandoned because people couldn't afford the water pump repair. YESSSSS...we need to sue Ford. I'm certainly going to contact the class action attorney and get my name on that list. Everyone should do the same! And yeah, I will never buy another Ford vehicle.

2016 Ford Exp failed water pump
I have a 2016 Ford explorer that I noticed one day had a leak under it. I took it to my mechanic who took me my water pump was gone but he did not have the tools to fix it and I would need to take it to the ford dealership. Called them, they quoted me between $4000-$4500 to fix my water pump and possible timing chain, they said I would more than likely need both. I was blown away at the price for a water pump. I was also told to have it towed there because if I drove it I would be risking blowing up my engine. I did find a local mechanic who did have the tools to fix it but still paid over $2000.00. I was out of a vehicle for almost a week, picked up my explorer last night and went maybe 5 miles before it started overheating on me. I immediately pulled over and shut my truck off and it was towed back to the shop. I decided to google the problem and I'm blown away to see everyone having the same issues!! This should be a recall!!

I'm in Hanford, Ca. My ford starts to overheat after driving it 3miles.... I call the dealer and take it directly there. I changed the thermostat about 2 months prior, helped until 10-24-23. They tell me it's a $2,800 fix and fortunately my late husband and I purchased the extended warranty. My cost is $100, which I'm thankful for, but that's not the point. WHY isn't this a recall. I'm on my own now and I don't need the extra expenses and headaches. Also the fear of it going out again and the warranty being up. Not sure yet if this new one will have warranty either? These cars are NOT cheap to buy either. I asked the dealer if my engine was damaged, he said no, but I'm having his sign a paper today stating there was no engine damage, as I have learned to be proactive and get things in writing. A man's word or handshake no longer have the meaning they used to.

Ford Explorer 2014 Water Pump Issues.
In November 2022, my heater was not working but after checking the coolant reservoir, noticed it was low. Added 1 gallon to it and noticed the coolant leak underneath where it was parked. Took the vehicle to the Ford dealer for diagnosis and was told it was the water pump that failed and it will cost $4900+tax to fix. Service advisor stated that vehicles with the 3.5L engines have the water pump inside the engine and were prone to this failure. Reported to NHTSA. Called Ford only to be told there was nothing they could do. As an engineer, I can say with 100% confidence this was a horrible design from Ford and yet they are not owning it. Very Sad. This is my 3rd Explorer but the only one with this issue. Trying to figure out what to do next. For sure, not paying $5,000 to Ford again for their BAD design.

Same issue as everyone else. Ugh! $3,500 repair bill for a water pump. Only 80,000 miles on the vehicle. Saw the temperature gauge rise and fall and heard the fans go into warp-speed to cool. Never overheated or reached red zone as driving and warp-speed fans would drop the temp. Brought to Ford dealership and got a bill for $3,500! I called other local repair shops and they wouldn't even try the repair since it's so involved. So, I had to go to Ford for the repair. Absolutely no other option (can't sell a broken vehicle) other than pay $3,500 repair bill. Ouch... Definitely won't be getting a Ford again in the future if this is how they designed an engine with a part that has a mileage expectancy that requires tons of labor to repair. Not very smart. $3,500 !!! For a water pump repair. That.Is.Crazy!

Come to find out jr was the water pump which cost me $85 pump the labor to change it cost me over 3k and now January 2022 car startsto over heat again and thinking it can’t be the water pump again I take it to ford thinking maybe it’s the cooling fan and after they perform a diagnostic check they tell me my water pump is leaking coolant and it’s going to cost me 4k to fix it.. Idk what to do I can’t afford to fix this again. Does ford seriously think that people have this kind of money to be shelling out year after year for this.. 2011 Ford Explorer Water Pump Exploded No More Vehicle
I am the original owner of my 2011 Ford Explorer. It has been a great vehicle for me and my 2 young daughters until this Saturday. I was traveling on a busy Texas Hwy and as I was approaching a split in the Hwy a light came on saying something about High Temperature and 10sec later my engine came on saying low pressure and then my Explorer stopped in the middle of the Hwy dead center of two merging Hwys. My two young daughters and I sat on the Hwy unable to get out because of traffic. The tow truck driver escorted us to safety as my girls were terrified. The auto shop has informed me that my water pump bearing came off, leaked into my engine, timing chain jumped pieces of metal throughout my engine and it is not fixable. I do not know what to do. Here is how we take action
There is no recall but here is what we can do. Call the National Highway Safety Administration at 888-327-4236 and complain. If enough of us let them know that this water pump problem is not safe because it could leave us stranded in the middle of the street, they may start a recall. Also call to join a class action law suit that is already in progress with Kessler, Topaz, Meltzer, and Check LLP at (484)270-1496 ask for Ms. Huggins who is very helpful. I have done both of these things because I have a failed water pump in my 2013 Ford Explorer XLT and the mechanic's estimate is $3900 to fix. I can't even drive the car because coolant goes straight to the ground. We are stronger in numbers. Anyone with this problem needs to call these

During our 300 mile journey home we needed to fill the coolant twice. Took to to a Ford service dept and they ran a diagnostic test and determined that the water pump failed and because it’s located in the engine it will cost us around $4500.00 to fix. Really, we have purchased cars from this dealer for years and there is no break even tho they knew about it. By the way they didn’t tell us about this known problem, a friend did when we were lamenting the high cost. He pulled up this article. I purchased 6 months with 60k miles and last week while driving from orange county california to Las Vegas on the 15 through the Mojave Desert the high temp warning light came on. I pulled over and opened the hood and noticed coolant pouring out of a hole near the water pump. I called roadside assistance as i was waiting I had enough of a signal to do some research and found out the location of the pump and knew then this was not good. Ended up waiting on the side of the expressway for 3 hours in 110 degree heat. Brutal. Had it towed to nearest dealership and have been quoted $4,000 to replace the water pump. I can not believe this has no recall, I was close to heat stroke and my wife ended up going to the hospital for heat stroke.

Bought a2013 explorer xlt. Had it three years. Drives very well until water pump started leaking everyday. Took it to my mechanic for repairs. Was told it’s an internal pump. What a dumb idea!!! The part alone is $80. Have to change timing chain while inside motor . Another $300 for the kit. Was told another $1200 to change pump and timing chain out. Had repairs done. Not even twenty eight later, due to water pump leaking into motor, it blew. Now because of a stupid design for the water pump, I’ve got to put out another $3000 for a motor replacement. Ford should be held accountable and not only change this stupid design, but should reimburse all of us customers our money for repairs plus interest for their stupidity.

As a single mother paying 3800 for a water pump and rental car is a lot of money. Without any warning my water pump went and I could no longer take my child to school. I googled and thought it would be an $800 fix. I had to ask friends and get a loan and I would’ve never bought this vehicle if I had known it had cheap parts that ford knows about and doesn’t disclose. My Grandpa worked for ford his entire life and I have primarily only driven fords because of him, so disappointed in the low quality water pump installed in the engine. 2014 Ford Explorer - Water pump
I noticed the heater wasn't working last Winter. I took it in, they said I was low on coolant. About six months later, I am cruising across town on my lunch break and a notification light came up on my dash saying "Engine Coolant Overheat" . I was immediately worried and was luckily only a few blocks from my work where I parked it and had it towed to an auto shop before my engine got damaged. Apparently its my water pump. I'm dreading the estimate for repair. I'm a single mom and live paycheck to paycheck... So I dont know how I am going to afford this. It was a good car before this issue. It is about 155k miles. :(

Just like many others, out of nowhere my 2016 Explorer overheated & the coolant light came on. I pulled off the freeway, in the middle of BF Montana in below zero temperatures, and called the Ford dealership. After an hour and a half (in -11 temp) a tow truck arrived & towed me 30 miles to Ford service. Two days later I'm told I will need to replace the engine because the water pump failed, causing major engine damage. No recall on the water pump but there is a recall on the coolant fan. Hmmm . . . Seems to me to be part of the coolant system, since coolant mixed with oil. I am now in negotiations with Ford.

Last week my heat started blowing cold air andI noticed that my car, which is usually quiet, was very loud. Turns out that there is a leak in my water pump. Ugh. I googled and it says to it should be about $800 to repair. I call Ford and get told that it’s over $4000. I found another place to do it for $2100. So now I’m out of that money, plus the rental car fee plus Uber fees. I’m so annoyed. All of this because of a flawed design. I called Ford for assistance and was took that they couldn’t help me. I filed a complaint. I am hoping that enough people file so that we can all get our money back.

My 2016 Explorer has been a great vehicle until June of this year 2021, not at 100K yet .I am a RN and after almost 2 years f being on the front lines for Covid I finally got to go on vacation with my family. However right before we went the coolant light came on my Mom took it Ford they wanted 3500 to fix it they said that the coolant had been leaking into my engine . They were very gracious and did get it down lower ,they also told me that this was an issue with this particular Model and year but was not a RECALL as of know. My heart sank . 2016 Explorer engine water pump engine failure.
Just happened this week. Driving normally down the road approaching a traffic signal. Heard a grinding noise and then the engine stalled. No prior indication of anything wrong. Was able to get it to restart, but running very rough. Got it into a parking lot and had it towed to my service center. Next day they advised me that the engine needs to be replaced. 84,000 miles, so it is out of warranty. Can't find a new engine anywhere. Called Ford, nothing is available. No indication as to when one may be available. How can I get in on any class action lawsuit?

Coolant
Took delivery of my new 2023Explorer. Drove a total of about 300 miles. Message came on dashboard to shut down the car as the engine was overheating. Long story short, the dealer picked up the car and I was told there was no coolant in it! They told me a hose was not correctly installed 🤔

Water Pump
2013 Taurus water pump went bad. None of the repair shops would touch it since it's a multi-day job and most shade tree mechanics had no idea how to fix it. Took it to the local Ford dealer and 3 days later and $2800 later I'm back on the road. At the very least Ford should've paid half.

2016 Ford Explorer water pump issue
I own 2016 Ford Explorer just pass 100k miles lost water pump. I was told this is going to cost north of$2000. Hope whoever designed this with timing chain drive is a fool. You guessed it last Ford for me. Too much for buy American. I bought American for last 30 years. Too sad and bad

2016 Ford Explorer Water Pump - $2,500 to $3,500?!?
This is a newer vehicle and I need to drop this much money for an internal engine water pump. I hope my engine isn’t ruined. This is ridiculous. I can’t afford this. I love my Explorer but I am selling it as soon as I fix it. Ford needs to post a recall! Unbelievable. 86,000 miles

2016 Explorer Waterpump failure
I have just had my 2016 Explorer in to the dealer. A water pump failure that is going to cost$4000 to fix. The vehicle has been maintained by the dealer at or ahead of schedule. At no point was I given any warning of the issue and the incompetent design. There should be a recall.

Very Upset
I just got an estimate and diagnosis to fix my 2013 Ford Explorer XLT. Diagnosis : Water Pump needs to be replaced as well as the timing chain, thermostat, gaskets, serpentine belt etc. Mechanic estimate is $3800. There is always something wrong with this car. I am beyond livid.

The water pump leaked all of a sudden, no mechanical warning signs just found fluid in the garage floor. Our extended warranty ended just this year however discovered the water pump would not have been covered. I maintain our 2016 explorer by the book. Cost $1,600.00 to replace.

Same issue as most Explorer owners here. 2015 Explorer water pump needs to be replaced. Due to where it's located, dealership says $3,900 to replace. That's absolutely insane. They design a car where the water pump is apparently faulty and BURY it under the engine?! Ludicrous!

2011 explorer with this issue
This just happened to our 2011 Explorer this week. Husband was driving on highway with 2 year old and it just stopped working. No sign of trouble until it started making a noise. Auto shops says failed water pump and most likely damaged the engine so estimated cost of $7,000!

Water pump
Heater stopped working on our 2016 Explorer with 40,000 miles and I assumed it might cost a couple hundred dollars...nope, 3600 for a water pump built INSIDE the engine!!! I cannot believe Ford is getting away with this!! They have known for years that this was a problem.

My Ford Explorer is having the same problem. We need to sue the company for sure! This has drastically damaged my family emotionally and financially. My water pump failed out of nowhere and now my engine is damaged. It is going to cost 6k to fix! This car is not that old!
