Best and Worst Years for the Chevrolet Silverado

Although Chevrolet has been making trucks since 1918, the Silverado has only been around since 1999. We take a look at the best and worst years.

For over a century, Chevrolet has been building trucks to get America to work. The 1918 One-Ton owns the title of being the first purpose-built Chevy truck.

Times were different, and the One-Ton barely resembles the luxury versions of trucks driving across America today (like the 2021 Chevy Silverado pictured above).

The 1918 One-Tons could be ordered as either a bare cowl and chassis, the basis for a custom build, or as an express body with an optional eight-post curtain top.

The year 1929 saw the arrival of the International Series AC Light Delivery truck with many upgrades, such as overhead valve V6 engines and standard steel wheels.

Then, 1938 introduced America to the Chevrolet Half-Ton with a stylish new vertical grille and design elements that make these models desirable to this day.

The 1947 3100 Series trucks were the first to use the “post-war” design language featuring a five-bar horizontal grille. The 1955 3124 Series Cameo Carrier was the first fleetside truck bed in the industry.

The C/K series trucks started adding comfort and convenience items to trucks in 1967, signaling the beginning of the trend away from being strictly a work vehicle.

The 1973 C30 One-Ton Dually was the first crew cab dually and is also considered the first heavy-duty truck on the market. The first introduction of the Silverado name on a Chevy truck happened in 1975, slotting atop their trim hierarchy of Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne.

The year 1988 debuted the design language most iconic to the Chevrolet truck line as we have seen evolutions of this design ever since. The wide, cross-bar grille splitting the headlight units, and overall boxy design have become staples of the modern Silverado.

Chevy Silverado: First Generation (1999-2006)

In what has become typical General Motors fashion, Chevy continued making the previous generation C/K truck for one more year alongside the newly released and renamed Silverado model for the 1999 model year. The 1500 models were updated first, followed by the 2500 and 3500 models for the 2000 model year.

With over a decade worth of technology and manufacturing improvements since the last major redesign, the 1999 Chevy Silverado was greatly improved over the outgoing C/K trucks.

Improvements to the overall strength of the truck came in the form of a hydroformed frame for added stiffness as well as strength, which helped overall towing and payload as well as an improved ride.

The new platform, dubbed GMT800, was shared with corporate twin GMC Sierra as well as the full-size SUVs from both brands. A new powerful line of Vortec engines found their way under the hood with the top engine being the 5.3L V8 making 270 hp and 320 lb.-ft. of torque.

Interior improvements include a rear driver-side door on extended-cab models for easier entry into the rear seat, which itself featured more legroom than before.

Bucket seats with a center console were now offered on higher trim trucks, helping to distinguish the Silverado as a truck that could be used as a family hauler, daily driver, and work truck.

Driver conveniences included a new driver information center in the dash to help give owners a better understanding of their new truck. Yes, the new Silverado was a success all around, even earning the coveted Motor Trend “Truck of the Year” award.

Now that full-size trucks were being utilized more for daily drivers, safety became more of a concern when shopping for the all-new Silverado.

Receiving an overall marginal score by the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Silverado bested its main rival the Ford F-150, which received a “Poor” rating the same year.

Chevy Silverado: 2003 Facelift and Upgrades

Four years into the production of the first-generation Silverado, designers gave the truck a facelift. Mostly centered around the headlights and grille, the new 2003 truck was visually different from the Suburban/Tahoe SUV counterparts which shared most of the same components as the truck.

Given its success and popularity, Chevy made many special editions and variations of the first generation Silverado over its eight-year run. From a true four-door crew cab to a high-powered SS model, or the eco-friendly Hybrid model, the refreshed Silverado was positioned with an option for every buyer.

As the looming bankruptcy of parent company GM approached, Chevy started implementing cost-cutting measures. Starting with the 2005 model, the standard four-wheel disc brakes were downgraded to a front disc/rear drum setup.

While still competent to stop a vehicle, we recommend avoiding the 2005 to 2006 models for this reason.

Also, check out the A1 Auto video above for a look at some of the problems with the 1999 to 2007 Silverados.

Chevy Silverado: Second Generation (2007-2013)

New from the ground up, the 2007 model was a vastly improved truck. Built on the GMT900 platform shared with the GMC Sierra and the full-size SUVs from GM, the new truck was bigger, stronger, and more aerodynamic than ever before.

Like the 1999 model before it, the 2007 Silverado also brought home the Motor Trend “Truck of the Year” award, along with many others including the North American Truck of the Year.

It is worth noting, the previous generation Silverado was continued for the 2007 model year under the “Silverado Classic” name.

Now more family-focused than ever before, the 2007 model redesign was the first to receive a “Good” rating from the IIHS in its overlap front crash test. The second-generation Chevy Silverado was also the generation with the least amount of recalls over its seven-year production.

Similar to the outgoing model, the 2007 was offered as a two-door regular cab, a four-door extended cab with rear opening doors, and a full four-door crew cab with larger front-hinged doors.

While the high-powered SS model did not carry over into the new generation, Chevy did offer a 6.0L “Vortec Max” engine as a part of the $3,575 Performance package good for 367 hp and 375 lb.-ft. of torque.

Reintroduced for the 2009 model year, the Hybrid model employed the same V8 but with an added hybrid-electric propulsion system good for 332 hp and 367 lb.-ft. of torque.

The result: an impressive EPA city/highway rating of 21/22 mpg in rear-wheel-drive configurations, and 20/21 in 4WD.

The interiors of the 2007 model were greatly improved and featured two different designs: one more work-focused for the lower trims, and a more luxurious design with imitation wood and aluminum trim for the uplevel LTZ trim.

2500 and 3500 heavy-duty models would be redesigned for the 2008 model year, featuring the same interior cabin treatments, and more muscular exterior body lines.

Chevy Silverado: Third Generation (2014-2018)

The third-generation truck built on the successes of the previous two, with even more focus on interior comfort, convenience, and safety.

By now, trucks are the family vehicle of choice by many Americans, most notably in the southern states. With that being the case, Chevy really focused on making the third generation as comfortable and as safe as possible, winning “Good” results across the IIHS safety testing.

Engines and transmissions were improved too, making the Silverado the most fuel-efficient V8-powered truck in its class.

Car and Driver noted that the 2014 model mastered all the fundamentals of the full-size truck, but asked if it was enough in the increasingly popular segment.

Motor Trend did not think so as the 2014 truck lost out to the 2014 Ram 1500 for their “Truck of the Year” award.

Refreshed for 2016 with new headlights, optional LED taillights, and new grilles, Chevy continued to make improvements to their full-size truck. Celebrating the centennial mark of their trucks, 2018 model Silverados, and mid-size Colorado trucks could be ordered in a commemorative special edition.

The competitiveness of the segment made the third generation the shortest-lived of any Silverado, with other truck manufacturers focusing on weight savings and fuel economy, Chevy worked hard to improve the next generation of their full-size truck.

Chevy Silverado: Fourth Generation (2019-Present)

Growing in size, but shedding up to 400 pounds in weight, Chevrolet got serious about improving the fourth-generation Silverado.

The 2019 model Silverado arrived with a lot of controversies, from its barely-changed interior to its functional air curtains on the front bumper to improve aerodynamics, critics had no shortage of things to say about the fourth-generation truck.

Another controversial point is the fact that this is the first time Chevrolet is offering a four-cylinder engine in the Silverado in the form of the 2.7L turbocharged engine.

Good for 310 hp and 348 lb.-ft. of torque, the little engine is no slouch compared to other options and is the only model to get over 20 mpg across all measurements (20/23/20 city/highway/combined).

Which Silverado Should You Buy?

It is clear that there are many things to consider when shopping for a used Silverado: 2WD or 4WD, Regular/Extended/Crew Cab, Short bed, long bed, four, six, or eight-cylinder engine, towing capacity, payload, trims, special editions, and more.

Full-size trucks are very important for automakers and the variety of choices proves that out.

We have already named the Silverado as the best choice for a Chevy truck over its mid-size and heavy-duty siblings.

As we have researched the life of the Silverado we believe the current generation model to be the most capable in terms of towing, hauling, and payload, as Chevrolet has done a lot of work to improve those numbers with each generation.

However, we find that perhaps the best value is the second generation.

Silverado 1500 Recalls by MY

As you can see from the graph above, the 2007 to 2013 model trucks consistently had the least amount of recalls of any generation of Silverado.

The second generation was also the first generation to be designed from the ground up to incorporate the very popular crew-cab design. These year models were also the first to receive “Good” crash test ratings from the IIHS.

Yes, we believe the second generation (2007-2013) Silverado has all the right things to make it our choice for the one to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Apr 26, 2022

What year is the most reliable Chevy Silverado?

The 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 series is typically regarded as the best year to get in terms of overall reliability and quality. They are known to last a long time and there are not many complaints that have been filed about them. They also have a lot of the latest technology in them, only missing out on some of the most cutting edge things like Apple CarPlay.

If you are looking for something newer than 2012 or with lower mileage then the 2018 model is where you will get all of the latest technology in the truck. These trucks were made right at the end of the third generation for the Silverado and they have nearly all of the luxury amenities of the new trucks but at a much more reasonable price.

The Silverado is a great truck to look at if you want a good half-ton truck either for getting around town or for hauling things for work. They are a competitive truck that will give you years of reliable service.

What problems do Chevy Silverados have?

The most common complaint about Chevy Silverados has to do with the oil consumption in the trucks. The V8 engines in them tend to burn a lot of oil and that leads to increased service costs as you will need to top off the oil or change it more frequently than on some other trucks.

Another common complaint with the Silverados with the 8-speed transmission is that they can shift roughly between gears. This was a new transmission that was introduced for the trucks in 2014 and since it has more gears it is more complex and they have had some problems maintaining reliability.

The final common complaint has to do with the frame of the truck. There have been times where Chevrolet has had bad batches of steel for the frames and that has led to some trucks rusting very fast. GM has even issued recalls in the past to address the frame problems and to install a rust preventative on the metal.

How long does a Chevy Silverado transmission last?

The transmission in a Chevy Silverado should have no problem lasting 150,000 to 200,000 miles as long as you take care of it. The newer 8-speed transmission that was introduced in 2014 is known to be a bit more fragile than the 6 speed that was used before, but they have revised them and gotten them working better since their introduction.

The most important thing to help your transmission last a long time is to get it serviced. Checking the transmission fluid regularly is important because if you notice metal in it then that is a sign that there is a problem inside the transmission. It is also good to change the fluid because as it heat cycles with the vehicle it can lose viscosity.

Usually, the transmission on a Silverado is one of the toughest and longest-lasting components as long as you take care of it then it will give you years of reliable service.

2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT 4x4
The only reason this truck gets one star is I cannot give it 0 stars. Since I first got this truck new in 2014 the transmission has shifted very hard. I took it to the dealer multiple time and was told there was no problem with it. Then it began developing a bouncing kind of shimmy after I put new tires on it at the dealer. Again, they said there was no trouble. I repeatedly complained about the transmission at almost every service. I had all servicing done at the dealer. Then at 67,000 miles the transmission blew up. I had it towed to the dealer. They said the metal had gotten throughout the transmission cooling system and since that is routed through the AC condenser, they all had to be replaced. They also found a crack in the differential requiring that too be replaced. This was now over $10,000 I had to spend. Next, within a week or two several warning lights started flashing on the dash and I would temporarily lose my power steering and power brakes. Back to the dealer! This, I, was told, was due to a bad steering angle sensor. That was replaced (600+) but they kept getting an error message. They then said the positive and negative power cables from the battery had a short and needed replacing ($1000+). Then It was the power steering assist electronic module that was bad. This second round of problems cost $7,200+. Then, the day after I got the truck back - not having put one mile on it yet - I pulled it out of the garage and noticed a transmission fluid puddle where it had been parked. In the last couple months, I have given this dealer over $17,000 in repairs. I have taken good care of this truck and had all servicing done at the dealer. In addition to all this, within a year of getting the truck the clear coat started peeling away around the gas filler. Then the paint began peeling around the wheel wells. This year it began rusting and I had it repaired. Another $4,100. The body man, who I have known as a friend for years, told me that the pain job that was done was terrible and he had to do some repair to the sheet metal under the truck that was rotting too. So what did I learn? First, this truck is a total POS. Second, I don't trust this dealer anymore. Repeated concerns that the transmission had a problem were ignored. When replacing the electrical system components, they just seem to pull and replace parts until they finally get it right; never being concerned about the cost to the customer.

My 2007 Chevy Silverado LTZ 4x4 extended cab was 6 years old with 91,000 miles. It has been a very reliable truck for daily driving, off road hunting and farm use. It did use about 1 quart of oil between 3000 mile changes but lasted until 241,124 miles before the cam bearings began to allow oil pressure to drop enough the oil pressure was not being read. The lifters began to chatter. I was told that this was a common issue due to the Active Fuel Management shutting down 4 cylinders and reengaging when truck was in a pull. Milage was average of 16 mpg putting on county roads but could attain 20 mpg on interstate drives. I have replaced the motor with a reman from Fraser as my GM Dealers wanted to sell e a new truck over replacing the engine. This is the best driving most comfortable and well equipped truck of four I have owned: 86 GMC, 87 Ford, 98 Ford and now this 07 which has been lower operationally than all but the 98 F150 which had 263000 on it before it was crashed by my significant other. I drive this truck about 450 miles a week and it has always started, driven and provided a fun comfortable ride. I expect to get anothr 200,000 plus out of the remanufactured 5.3 and may deactivate the AFM to see if it truely makes any difference in engine life keeping the same maintenance schedule of 3000-4000 mile between oil changes and routine maintainance of her. No rust as she recieves annual rust protection treatment with undercoat. I would definately buy another Chevy Silverado when I tire of this one or get a crazy cant refuse deal on her. Great Truck for the dollar.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ: My best pickup owned to date.
Great quality in the pickup. Heated leather seats and lumbar support are great. The form fitted floor pads make for easy clean up. The pickup came with a bed rug and a roll up bed cover. The bed rug works great for preventing whatever you load from moving in the box while driving. The bead rug is easily taken out and put back in, based on your needs for hauling. The stereo system is great and works well with XM radio. I also love the towing package. I tow a camper or my boat without any problems. The four wheel drive has been very dependable and has gotten me out of several off road hunting situations that could have been disastrous. This pickup has been great in the field and on the road with an average mileage rate of 28 miles per gallon. I only wish it had a little bigger gas tank! The best part about a later trade in will be the value that a Chevy truck holds vs ford's and dodge's. Cannot wait for my next Chevy Silverado.

2016 Silverado LTZ Crew Cab
This was my first full size truck and it is amaziing ! Heavy, powerful, good looking and I will probably drive a truck the rest of my life from now on. I bought it new in May of 2016, it had just arrived on the dealers back lot, d***y and the front grill was still wrapped for shipping, I wasn’t paying any attention to it but my salesman keep saying “ you need to look at this “ it’s everything you want ! So finally I did and it had everything I wanted with a 50k sticker. When they finally had her cleaned up and pulled it up front I thought oh S… ! It was beautiful, tungsten grey with black leather interior and tricked out ! I’ve been in love ever since, it’s fun to drive and on the highway it’s awesome………. I’ve thought of buying a new one but I like the weight of mine verses the new ones and I honestly think mine is better looking. I’m a diehard Silverado fan !

Overall very good truck for average person. 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT w/1LT.
My 2008 Silverado pickup is a comfortable ride, it does not ride like a work truck but more like an SUV. I have had several issues over the last few years where the air condition did not work properly and several switches quit working. For example, the window controls on the driver's side will only work for 2 of the 4 windows and the cruise control can be finicky. Overall, the truck performs pretty well, it takes off good and stops as expected. It is also pretty reliable, I have not had a situation where the truck left me stranded, ice only had 'comfort' related issues with the truck. The motor and engine and functional aspects work just fine. I like the features that are included, there are separate controls for the driver and passenger heat & ac. It only has the basic heat, ac, and radio controls on the dash and they are simple enough that I feel comfortable using them while driving.

Trouble truck
So it was time to get a new pick up truck for an alaska trip I was planning so decided on a brand new 2016 Silverado 1500 and like an idiot did not do my homework well guess what 5 yrs later and 67,000 miles had to rebuild the transmission for 4000.00 dollars I had no confidence in this truck sold it. The worse part of it is that GM was aware of the problems with the transmission issues. I would not recommend a chevy product and have discouraged many people from purchasing a Chevy product and with reason the 2021 Chevy 1500 was rated the least reliable truck. Rather own a yugo (if you remember them) At least I know ahead of time I am getting junk and prepare for it. Don’t buy junk don’t buy Chevy hear that Bara if you don’t know she is the head huncho in GM

Awesome truck with 111k miles on it currently. Extremely comfortable for long trips and looks sharp with the chrome package. Love the dual zone climate control. The infotainment lighting has at times been glitchy, but not excessively so. Recently the power steering drive shaft assembly had to be replaced. Unfortunately it went out as my husband was rounding a curve almost causing him to go off the road, but he made it. A little shocked about that, but overall the vehicle has been good to us, so we can't complain. Only improvement I can think of is the lack of air flow in the rear seat especially on long trips. It would be nice if some vents were put in the back seat for better air flow.

Differences between gmt 400, 800 and 900 in basic work truck configuration.
Gmt900 wt regular cab is cramped inside compared to a Gmt800 wt regular cab which is very roomy, base seats get lower manual lumbar to save your back. Gmt400 wt has a smaller regular cab but drives like a car. I like the old 1999-2002 front-end look. 2003-2006 cat eye is not pretty and has aged poorly. Get these trucks without advanced undercarriage rust or trucks that were rustproofed since day one. They are all good trucks for the money, some better than others, do your own research before buying one. There's a Chevy/Gmc pickup out there for nearly any budget. With low maintenance and cheap parts you can't go wrong.

I got mine second hand. The guy before me ragged it out as much as possible, but I still think it is a great truck. Yes, the badge under the extended cab quarter panel says silverado on either side. The transmission had a flaw, but the rebuild kit puts in a stronger part.the truck sat for 2 years without being started. I went and put fresh gas in the tank and some down the intake manifold and the 350 came back to life that easy. My 99 dodge ram has better differentials as they are Dana and solid axils, but you can't beat these old pickup trucks. They are more reliable, cost less and have more metal in the panels.

2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT: Great all around vehicle.
There is some rust starting to establish itself under the wheel wells of the back bed especially. I have added chrome fender flares to cover some of it up. Plastic chrome handles on doors have a tendency to break. Need to check bolts on exhaust manifold periodically as they have a tendency of unscrewing themselves, however they are really easy to get to and with a little loctite they should stay right in. I am very pleased with the truck overall and the performance of the engine is great.

Recently bought used 2011 with 122k miles on it that had just gone through an engine rebuild. I almost walked away from it until I learned about the problems with AFM. The lifters tend to fail around 100k miles requiring rebuild or engine replacement. Thankfully a company called Range Technologies makes an adapter that plugs into the truck's OBD-II port and will prevent the engine from ever going into 4 cylinder mode. Problem solved. 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ is the best truck in the world!
This vehicle has a v8 under the hood with a lot of power! The seats are very comfortable and adjustable. The screen on the radio is touch or dial activated and is big enough to see clearly. Temperature controls can be adjusted for each side or sync. Very roomy and comfortable on the inside.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
My vehicle is very reliable, the only issue is that it does not have much room. The vehicle is mechanically sound. Maintenance is unusually not very expensive. Love the towing capacity. The interior is not the best but it does the job. Very good truck and engine has good power.

2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT. Great truck overall. Only issue is the ac condenser went out at 3 years old.
Only problem I have with this vehicle is the a/c condenser went out when it was only 3 years old. To have it fixed it's a $180 part but they have to take apart the whole front clip to get to it. For $1200+. Other than that great truck, hauls trailers great. Overall great truck.

Mr.
I have the 2020 Custom Trail Boss. The ZR1 is absolutely the smoothest truck I have had. The 4.3 liter V6 is powerful and the pickup when you gas it is smooth and the pull you feel is outstanding. I am very happy and I personally think this is the most beautiful truck out there.

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 uses a lot of gas when driving.
Having the truck has been good. I run into no problems but one. And that is the gas. The thing uses a lot of gas for the V8 models of the truck. But over all a very good truck to have for anyone. The good thing about them is that there is parts everywhere for them for cheap.

Never been stranded in almost twenty years. Great 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
Best vehicle I have ever owned. Have not had any major issues. Been driving it for almost twenty years. Best thing about the truck is the four wheel auto button. I live in Minnesota and it goes the snow very well. I can hit the four wheel auto going seventy miles an hour.

2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a great truck.
I have had no problems except for normal wear and tear. It has been reliable as old faithful. A very comfortable ride in all areas. It has power everything. My truck has a CD player, cassette player and am/FM radio. It has lighting for the truck bed and fog lights.

Awesome 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 very happy with it.
Awesome ride smooth and easy to handle plenty of front leg room. Four wheel button drive is convenient leather seats with heaters. Plenty of healing power and bed space bed liner is a plus. Decent gas mileage for this size truck. Does all hauling that I need.

My 2014 Silverado double cab lt.
Very easy on the eyes, maneuverable in traffic. Great fuel economy for a pickup truck. And always handy when moving big items. The 5.3 engine has all the power you need. Cockpit seating comfortable on local and long trips. Instrumentation at your fingertips.

Why buy a2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
Never had any problems with this vehicle. When I bought it there were about five hundred miles on it. I now have 235 thousand miles on it. The on it thing that I have had to it was general maintenance on it. When I buy next vehicle it will be a Chevrolet.

Chevy Silverado 2004 1500. Blue truck 4 doors. Extended cab.
I bought my truck off a farmer. So it had a lot of wear and tear. Easy problems to fix. Brake pads, oil change and all that good jazz. It is a good truck. Hauls good. Works good. Sounds loud. Comfortable. Fits a family. Bigger tank so gas is expensive.

The 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is still in good condition.
The Chevy has been a very reliable vehicle. Just recently had work done on air conditioning. This has been the only major repair I have had to do. Have also had oil changed and have kept up with maintenance. Body and paint are still in good condition.

2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ltz 6.2l.
There's only a couple of things I do not love about my 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ltz 6.2l. The crankshaft rear oil seal started leaking around 100,000 miles. The 'torque management control' [throttle delay] is horrible and is the main complaint.

2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 trucks are the way to go!
This is a beginner pickup truck. I would like it even more if it were 4-wheel drive, but it's still nice. The back seat has a nice amount of space but I wish it was 4 doors instead of the butterfly type doors. Overall, gets the job done.

Good but brakes not good
2016. Good truck. Decent power . 5.3 is good. Upset about brake recall in 19. Gm reprogramming the ebcm. Just too much pressure on brake and gas pedal. Gas mileage tanked. It hurt ride quality. It hurt power. Gm will deny everything.

Vibrant red sporty single cab stepside z71 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
I love these trucks! This is my second one of this year model. The 5.3 motor has always giving me the power to haul what I've needed and speed. Not the most fuel efficient but I've always been more of a smiles per gallon kind of man.

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a work horse that keeps on ticking
It has been a very reliable vehicle. It is just nice enough to drive everyday yet old and beat up enough that I don't have to worry about beating it up when hauling stuff with or in it. Only complaint is the poor gas mileage.

Your statement indicates that production of the silverado began in 1999. I have a 1998 silverado 2500 parked in my driveway. It’s an awesome truck all around.
