Key Points

  • The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze was the most problematic model year for the automaker, with seven recalls over issues including faulty airbags and brake failure.
  • The 2011 Cruze had similar complaints and recalls issued to the 2012 model year, with many of the complaints reported involving transmission failure under 100,000 miles, and oil and coolant leaks causing overheating issues.
  • The most recalls the Cruze has received in any year has been seven, including the 2014 Chevy Cruze, which saw new problems arise, including a recall for the airbag inflator and two recalls involving the drive axle fracturing.

2011 and 2012 Chevy Cruze Model Years Share Several Hazardous Issues, Like Potential Brake Failure, Engine Fires

As Chevrolet’s entry-level economy sedan, the Cruze has a lot to offer at first glance for its below-$20,000 base MSRP. The compact car holds consistent five-star National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ratings and good safety standing with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), as well an EPA-estimated city/highway combined fuel economy rating of almost 40 mpg.

Although the Chevrolet Cruze started off as a promising addition to the Chevy lineup, it quickly became the source of many problems for the automaker. At present, the NHTSA has reported 683 complaints and seven recalls for the 2011 Cruze, and 789 complaints and seven recalls issued for the 2012 model. Because of this, early years of the Cruze should be avoided–specifically 2011 through 2014 models.

2011 and 2012 Models Face Potential Engine Fires

Both the 2011 and 2012 model years for the Chevy Cruze were recalled due to issues involving engine fire hazard. Chevrolet states that the design of the engine shield could trap oil or other engine fluids near the hot engine or exhaust system surfaces, resulting in a potential fire.

To fix this, Chevrolet dealers will modify the engine shield. This recall impacted over 400,000 vehicles between the 2011 and 2012 model years. An investigation by the NHTSA found 25 confirmed instances of engine fire as a result of this issue, with at least four other fires caused by other issues.

Possible Brake Failure Leads to Recalls for 2011 and 2012 Chevy Cruzes

The 2011 and 2012 Chevy Cruze models were also recalled over possible brake failure. Cruze models equipped with the 1.4-liter gasoline turbo engine and 6T40 front wheel drive automatic transmission, may face a loss of braking assistance that will require extra pedal force and/or distance to bring the vehicle to a stop. Affecting almost 300,000 vehicles, dealers will replace a microswitch to remedy the issue.

Owner Complaints Focus On Engine and Transmission Issues

Owners of the 2011 and 2012 Chevrolet Cruze models collectively agree the engine and transmission are not good. Car Complaints reported many owners experiencing issues with the transmission hesitating, slipping, or disengaging completely, and ultimately resulting in complete failure in vehicles with under 100,000 miles. Additionally, several owners posted on Reddit expressing their disappointment with the 2012 Cruze as a result of experiencing issues like coolant leaks and failure of the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) value.

2014 Chevrolet Cruze May Lose Power Over Faulty Drive Axle, and Airbags May Not Deploy, Among Other Concerns

Prior to its mid-cycle refresh, Chevrolet added a turbo diesel engine option to the Cruze in 2014. Despite encouraging fuel economy ratings, the Chevy Cruze continued to have significant issues during the 2014 model year. There has been 554 complaints filed with the NHTSA, as well as seven recalls issued by Chevrolet.

Drive Axle Failure May Cause 2014 Model to Lose Power and Coast to a Stop

The Cruze continued to experience issues that compromise vehicle safety, including failure of the drive axle. Affecting 2014 Cruze models with the 1.4-liter turbo engine, Chevy states that if the half shaft fractures and separates while driving, the vehicle could lose power and coast to a stop, or unexpectedly move when at a stop without the parking brake applied. Chevy will inspect and replace the right half shaft as needed.

Inflator Malfunction in 2014 Models Could Result in Airbags Not Inflating and/or Shrapnel Hitting Occupants in an Accident

The 2014 Chevy Cruze has another significant safety issue involving its airbag inflator. Chevy recalled approximately 30,000 vehicles for being manufactured with an incorrect part that could cause the airbag inflator to rupture in the event of a crash, resulting in the airbag not inflating. The rupture could also cause metal fragments to strike and potentially seriously injure the vehicle occupants. The automaker will replace the driver-side airbag. A lawsuit was filed against Chevrolet and its airbag manufacturer because of this issue.

2016 Cruze Has Four Recalls, Nearly 200 Complaints Over Problems Ranging from Misaligned Headlights to Vehicle Rollaway

The 2016 model year introduced the Chevrolet Cruze’s second-generation, which lasted through 2019, when the model was discontinued. The generation saw the debut of a new standard power plant, a 1.4-liter turbo with direct injection, which enhances performance and efficiency.

Despite Chevy’s efforts to improve the Cruze’s reliability, however, the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has several problems associated with it. The 2016 model has four recalls and nearly 200 complaints over moderate to serious problems that range from incorrectly aligned headlights to the potential for vehicle rollaway.

Fuel May Leak in a Rollover Crash in Some 2016 Models

Chevrolet recalled 2016 Chevy Cruze models due to risk of a gasoline leak following a rollover crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal safety standards. To mitigate the dangerous condition, dealers will shield the fuel tank vapor pressure sensor from damage in a rear-impact crash.

Consumers Complain that the 2016 Cruze Reportedly Has Stalling Issues

In addition to the recalled issues, owners have reported other problems with the 2016 Chevy Cruze models. Multiple complaints by Cruze owners on the forum Cruze Talk cite issues with their vehicle stalling. One owner noted the issue was occurring when the Cruze’s auto stop/start function was engaged. Another stated that when this condition occurred, they needed to shift their Cruze into Park in order to restart the vehicle.

Is the Chevy Cruze a Reliable, Recommended Car Despite Some Recalls and Owner Complaints?

Given the extensive issues found on the first-generation Chevrolet Cruze, 2011-2015 model years should be avoided. Although the second-generation Cruze currently has less problems than its predecessor, more could arise as the 2016-2019 model years continue to age and accrue mileage.

Despite both generations having good safety ratings, the issues noted above can create hazardous driving conditions that could increase the risk of a crash. For those looking for a compact economy sedan that is reliable and affordable, consider alternatives comparable to the Chevrolet Cruze.

Frequently Asked Questions

By Josh Barrett | Nov 8, 2021

Does a Chevy Cruze Last Long?

Despite a few issues to watch for, the Chevy Cruze can last a long time. With proper maintenance and care, and if you go easy on the pedal, 150,000-200,000 miles is possible. This means driving 12,000 miles a year, a Cruze should last about 12-17 years.

Is the Chevrolet Cruze Expensive to Maintain?

Expect to spend $545 annually to maintain a Chevrolet Cruze, per RepairPal, which is about average vs. other compact sedans, but notably higher than the Toyota Corolla’s $362. No, the Cruze isn’t the cheapest, but $45 a month isn’t bad considering all it offers. To reduce maintenance expenses, the model's final year, 2019, should still be under warranty.

Is the Chevrolet Cruze 2011 a Good Car?

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is an ok compact sedan overall, shining mostly due to its fuel efficiency. Since you can buy a leather-loaded LTZ for only about $8,200, it’s also affordable. Yet, we can’t call it “good,” as it's known for early transmission failure where the only fix was to replace the unit entirely, a roughly $3,300 repair.

Had a 2011 Chevy Cruze for eight months
My family bought me a brand new 2011 Cruze. From the beginning, this car was nothing but trouble. Had an issue with its sensors, braking issues was lacking, the cabin was a joke, and the "A" column was in the line of sight. However, nothing compares to these minor problem when it comes to the acceleration. The "Drive-by-Wire" acceleration was the major issue. The car tend to stall a lot. In fact, the car stalled from a dead stop. I had to take the car the dealership at least three times. Unfortunately, they refused to look at it, and calling it a phrase "it's learning from you how to drive." I filed a report to the BBB to get this car a lemon. Unfortunately, GM only offered me a $500 rebate. I took this car and sold it.

2016 Cruze. First gen, 1.8. 278,000 klics. Runs perfectly. Only dealer serviced by the book by same dealershipSame mechanic works on it. Got 38 Mpg, last week. Just put Toyo walnut snows on,tires as quiet as summer tires. Always garaged with steady zero degrees (Canada), no rust, Krown rust proof annually, spring is best to eliminate salt build up. No undercoating. Have changed water pump. Smooth ride, safe. Goal is 500k. Not recommended for everyone unless you follow the maintenance schedule, religiously, which is the first car I have ever done this with since I started to drive, 65 years ago. 275,000 km. Heading for 300,000. No problems yet, 1.8 motor.

Run do not walk from purchasing the 2012 Cruze
Run do not walk from purchasing this piece of garbage. I purchased mine in 2014 with 55,000 miles on it. After the first week it started smoking and overheating on freeway not once, not twice, not three times, 5 times. All the dealer did was put the same part on on like 4 times. Now every time I drive it stabil trek system starts flashing radio starts blinking on and off. Thermostat and water pump also broke.

Used 2011
Got of these with the 1.8 liter engine and a standard transmission. Haven't had it a year yet but overall it has been very good to me, I did need to replace the valve cover gasket, but considering the car has over 100 000 miles I'm ok with that. The previous owner was also very happy with this car, only issue he ever had with it was a coil pack failing. For three grand I could not ask for a better car.

2011 Cruze
Bought this used about 2 months ago, LTZ model 6 speed 1.8L. @178,000kms. Love the overall design and looks of this vehicle. However it needed quite a few things, Tensioner belt, Complete Valve cover replacement *Gasket included, Replaced a By Pass coolant hose and Housing, due to overheating issues. Intake Manifold, and some sensors. Once repaired I find it to be performing how it should! Love it.

2011 Cruze has many issues as first model of its kind.
The alignment is definitely off, and I always have issues with the engine and oil containers. I would never recommend a 2011 Cruze because it was the first year this model came out so there were a ton of kinks that had to be figured out first. There were a ton of recalls and I still had to pay over $5, 000 to fix engine issues.

2016 Cruze stays in the shop
We bought a Cruise lt w 30000miles from a dealership. 3 weeks after vacuum systemwent out. In the year we have had it and the 60000miles we had added it has had the vacuum system go out 3 times, blown head gasket, turbo went out 2 times, radiator hose, starter, battery 2 times, once it leaked acid onto the transmission lines.

Do not purchase the 2012 Cruze
The Cruze has an issue with the valve cover on the engine and it is the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned. There has been effort to help cover the cost of the required repairs, but the engine still has ongoing issues, even after repairing. The tires are also wildly expensive for a sedan.

2012 Chevy Cruze: a big failure
Completely unreliable and the parts aren't necessarily cheap. Front window fogs up constantly for no reason. Terribly low resale value (because of how unreliable they are). Problems with engine temperature sensor. Uncomfortable seats. Takes forever for the heater to warm-up or ac to cool down.

2014 Chevy Cruzes are horrible
I had to get a reset on the computer twice, electrical issues, fuel pump issues, within the first three years. I bought it brand new 5 miles on it. Once the three year warranty was up all the problems came back. Stalls out constantly does not get enough fuel. Not worth the money at all.

Don't buy a 2011 Cruze. They are not put together very well and have to many problems and recalls.
I bought it brand new in 2011 and have constantly had to put money in it for repairs. It has had a lot of recalls and it jerks a lot when you press on the accelerator at times. When you turn on the heat or air it has a horrible smell which is a known issue that gmc can't seem to fix.

Not a happy camper with 2016 Cruze
I've had my Cruze for 3 yrs and it's been plagued with problems from day 1. Had to have the engine changed at 80,000 miles and it's been off the road more than it's been on since with electrical issues, overheating issues, running rough issues it's just the worst car I've ever owned.

Cruise around in the 2011 Chevy Cruze
I have had some minor problems with it, had a water pump bust, negative battery cable which this one was on a recall list. A few other minor repairs like the transmission leaking fluid, several pipes that have to do with the oil and oil pan blew and leaked until repaired.

2012 Cruze is trash
Went from the showroom floor start to the service department.. Stayed there at least once a week and seven years later I'm still making repairs. Turbo charger, radiator, every sensor it has, now the power steering sensor comes on while I'm driving and locks the car down.

2011 Cruze has had engine issues
My vehicle has a lot of engine related issues, especially with the exhaust. There are also a ton of recalls on my vehicle that I constantly have to get repaired. The a/c cooling fan is extremely loud and always sounds like there is a problem with it.

There have been a lot of recalls on my 2011 Cruze
I like how it drives, I hate that I have had so many problems with it, a lot of recalls, issues with my engine. I hate that it does not accelerate quickly if I have the air conditioning on, and the air conditioning barely works to cool off.

I have an 2014 Chevy Cruze bought it with 200 miles. I have had it for 7 years and this year 2021 I paid it off. But 3 months after paying it off the engine went out. And the miles are only 60,000. I can't believe it went out.

I bought it brand new in 2012. Since then this 2011 so far has had 5 recalls on various issues. The issues with this Cruze was brakes and something with the coolant system and I do not remember the other issues.

A personal review of my 2011 Chevy Cruze
It has had a number of recall repairs. It's tough to start after getting gas. If acceleration is to aggressive, it lurches. The trunk can only be opened from the key fob. The tires continuously need air.

2014 Cruze is not long term reliable
Transmission issues. Have had over $4000 of work needed at 100,000 miles. The turbo needs to be replaced that is a $1800 job and the catalytic converter needs to be replaced that is a $1800 job as well.
