Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Pickup Truck Reliability: How Long will it Last?

Hamed Paydarfar
Feb 15, 2022

Chevy’s Silverado is twice as likely as the average vehicle to reach 200,000 miles. Many owners, however, have reported owning Silverados with over 300,000 miles on the odometer. Realistically, expect to get 150,000 to 200,000 miles with proper maintenance.

2014 Chevrolet Silverado

Key Points

  • The reputable Chevrolet Silverado 1500 can reportedly reach 250,000 miles without any critical problems, so long as it is looked after properly.
  • The average Chevrolet Silverado truck owner can realistically expect to get 150,000 to 200,000 miles out of the vehicle.
  • Regular maintenance and following the manufacturer’s suggested service schedule can stretch the Silverado’s life span to 300,000 miles.
  • The average annual repair costs for Chevy truck model years between 2009 and 2016 equal $650 to $700.
  • A Chevrolet Silverado’s 200,000 miles is equal to about 10 to 20 years of use for the pickup truck.
  • Chevy Silverado is twice as likely as the average vehicle to reach 200,000 miles, beating out the F-150 and Ram 1500.

How Long will a Chevrolet Silverado Last? Reliable Reports Suggest 200,000 Miles, but Many Owners have been Able to Stretch it Over 300,000

Over the years, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has proven to be a reliable, long-lasting half-ton truck. Even models as old as 2011 still offer a lot of bang for the buck with potent engine options.

Various auto sites praise the Silverado as a dependable truck that can last about 200,000 to 250,000 miles, which is over 20 years.

However, many owners have reported owning Silverados with more than 300,000 miles on the odometer with proper maintenance.

But even if you put a Silverado through a lot of abuse, you may still end up getting around 150,000 miles (or about 10 years) before having to repair or replace critical parts.

Chevy Silverado is Twice as Likely as the Average Vehicle to Reach 200,000 Miles, Beating Out the F-150 and Ram 1500

According to the research done by the automotive website iSeeCars, the Chevy Silverado is more than twice as likely as the average vehicle to reach 200,000 miles. iSeeCars claims that while one percent of cars reach over 200,000 miles on average, the number for Silverados sits at 2.1%.

That’s not much of a surprise. Trucks are expected to last longer than everyday commuter cars. What’s interesting is that the Silverado beats the Ford F-150 (2.0%) and the Ram 1500 (1.2%) in iSeeCars’ report, and it ranks as the longest-lasting American pickup truck.

Used Silverados Still Offer Excellent Reliability and Lower Cost of Ownership Compared to Rivals, with Annual Repair Costs Averaging Around $700

Opting for an older model Chevy truck shouldn’t make you worry about reliability, so long as you choose a less problematic model year. The 2009 Silverado, for instance, can range from $13,688 to $24,369, comes with fewer complaints than previous years, and has no serious mechanical problems.

The 2009 Silverado can last over 250,000 miles while keeping the annual cost of ownership at $658, according to Repair Pal. This is about $100 lower than the F-150 and the Ram’s estimated yearly repair costs.

Silverado models from 2011 to 2014 offer excellent qualities while keeping the annual maintenance cost low.

The 2014 Silverado might be more expensive than its rivals, but it comes with newer technology that helps you forget the truck is nearly 10 years old.

Some newer Silverados are pricier to maintain annually compared to rivals, though they’re still safe and reliable trucks. The 2016 model, for instance, would cost you $761 to maintain, according to Repair Pal.

Helping a Silverado Reach 200,000 Miles is Possible with Chevrolet’s Suggested Maintenance Schedule

Realistically, there’s no guarantee that a used Silverado with 150,000 miles would last another 50,000 without drilling a hole in your pocket. However, there are certain things you can do to make sure your Chevy truck lasts as long as possible.

Following Chevrolet’s suggested maintenance schedule is crucial to ensure your Silverado truck survives beyond 200,000 miles. Critical services include:

  • Every 22,500 miles: Replace passenger compartment air filter
  • Every 45,000 miles: Replace engine air cleaner filter, change automatic transmission fluid, change brake fluid, replace clutch fluid, and inspect the evaporative control system
  • At 97,500 miles: Replace spark plugs and inspect spark plug wires
  • Every 150,000 miles: Drain and fill engine cooling system, and inspect engine accessory drive belt

Realistically, Expect to Get 150,000 to 200,000 Miles with a Silverado, but Exceptional Maintenance can Add Another 50,000 to 100,000 Miles

The Silverado is one of the most dependable American pickup trucks available. According to J.D. Power, the Silverado scores exceptional in quality and reliability.

Reports from various reputable auto websites say the Silverado can reach 200,000 miles, which is about 10 to 20 years of use for a pickup truck.

However, a Silverado’s lifespan can reach up to 300,000 miles. There have been owners’ reports to prove it.

If you’re looking for a heavy-duty truck with a lot of towing capacity that lasts you a long time, the Silverados featuring Duramax diesel engines are among the best options out there.

2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD (Z71)
I've beaten the c**p out of my 02 Silverado and it's still going strong. It's my primary off road vehicle so the suspension is heavily modified with lots of aftermarket parts. The 4L60E transmission is a POS I agree (currently on my 3rd re-build, but will be switching to a built tranny after this one shits the bed) but the 5.3L Vortec motor is one of the best and most reliable motors ever... My truck has 183,000 miles on it in 20 years and she still wheels like a champ every time I'm out on the trails. Everything on the 2002 Chevy Silverado 4WD is awesome except the weak a*s IFS....Why won't GM bring back solid axles anymore!?!?!?! WHY GM, WHY!?!?!?! Why do you have to make a dope truck and then screw with us on cheap a*s axles and tranny (unless you're a 2500 or 3500 since those have Allison trannys).

Beat you all, mileage & performance
I drive a 1994 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado, 5.7 , 5-speed, 4 WD with 373 posi-traction rear end. I ordered it brand new from the factory. It's color specific, with the rear end and a short bed, standard cab, deep red and silver. It has never had any engine problems or repairs and just replaced the front brakes at 480,000 miles & the rear brakes 560,000. That's miles folks. Not kilometers. My reliable American made pickup now has, drum roll please...633,723 miles on it. I keep saying I'll "drive it til it pukes its guts out on the side of the road." and then I'll replace the engine. P When I'm asked how I have done this, I reply, " Three things. Regular maintenance, don't let your kids drive it, and buy an American made Chevrolet."lus, this is not my first Chevy pickup. I still have my 1972 K10, S/B.

Still going
My 2000 Silverado 1500 5.3l currently has 272k miles on it and still going strong and runs great. I still tow my boat with this truck. Only major repair was tranny at 230k. Motor has no leaks and burns very little oil. Paint is chipping like most white trucks of this era but that’s just cosmetic. My previous truck was a 2001 GMC Sierra and I had 230k on it when I sold it. Never had any major issues with it. Common issues I have seen - radiator plastic sides can crack (1), ABS unit fails (both trucks), belt tensioners go bad before the belts replace every 150k, a/c damper motor (both trucks), light switch (1), rear axle seal(1) O2 sensors (4). All these items I consider normal wear for 2 trucks with 500k combined miles.

2005 Silverado 1500HD
I’ve had to replace a few things (transfer control solenoid, radiator, front hubs, one transmission rebuild 4L80E), but little else now approaching 200,000 miles. The 6.0 uses no oil between changes. Just had to change out the fan clutch. Truck has been a workhorse pulling up 8000 lbs regularly. Yes, the 6.0 is a gas hog, but I can do 17-18 mpg empty on the freeway. They rebuilt the transmission with improved parts than stock (the 4L80E is basically a Turbo 400 with a fourth gear OD and electronic shift control), so I don’t think I’ll see another failure. Gonna drive it out, and thinking 300,000 is easily within grasp. The bigger axle and brakes of the 1500HD (like a straight 2500) are welcome.

2015 Chevy Silverado Saved Not Only My Life, But My Family's Lives TOO
I completely loved my 2015 Chevy Silverado (2WD) LTZ Z71, it was an amazing, safe, reliable, dependable, and was always getting compliments on it. Around 54,000 miles, it gave its life protecting my family and myself, when we were in a head-on collision. Had we been in any other vehicle, other than a full-size truck, at least one of the four of us would have died. This is why I bought a 2018 Silverado (4x4) LTZ Z71 Midnight Edition, when I was able to walk again, and return to work.

Gmc/chev trucks are garbage!
Recent chev/gmc trucks havebtrannies from hell. They frequently don't make 100,000 klms. They ofyrn pack in without warning leaving you stranded with a 6,000.00 repair. '15, '16, '17's are THE WORST of these terrible trucks. Replaced many, many of these trannies - the on line reports concur. Also replaced fuel pump, air con. G.m. Doesn't want to know you the minute the warranty expires. They KNOW how bad their products are.

The Chevy custom 1500, pros and cons.
My 2016 Chevy Silverado custom is a very good reliable vehicle. If you are in the market for a simple powerful truck and you can live without some higher end luxury than this is a perfect choice. I will upgrade in the future but for now I am perfectly happy with my Chevy.

Chevy silverado pros and cons.
Intermittent problems that I wouldn't consider normal wear and tear. Uses some oil between oil changes. Very comfortable for long trips. Overall fairly reliable. Ability to tow and work the truck when needed. Would consider buying another silverado in the future.

Tough, strong and durable 2013 Silverado
My truck has been great. It has been the most reliable vehicle I've had to date. No other automaker can compete with the comfort you experience driving in a Silverado. Also, keeping up with scheduled maintenance is key for any vehicle, which I've done.

Maintain it, and it might outlive you! 1998 Chevy 1500 Silverado
1998 Chevy Silverado with 8 cylinder engine, 110,000 miles. Every time I hop in this truck I think to myself, “What a great truck!”. Comfortable, powerful, reliable, simple. Completely great after 24 years. All it requires is routine maintenance.

The good the bad and not so ugly.
The truck runs great. Obviously not great on gas. Suspension is fine. I would prefer that a leveler was standard format for these trucks. The multiple upgrades should be commonplace in these vehicles and standard for the price of this vehicle.

Strong dependable long lasting - 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500
When I bought the truck I had no issues until I reached right around 20, 000 miles, miner issues, some noise, was taken care off other than that it is been really good all the features I need, comfort level is amazing since it is a crew cab.

My truck overall gets me where I need to be. It is hefty and can haul big loads.
It breaks all the time and is still a relatively new truck. The door handles always fall off. I have to open the door by rolling down the window and opening it from the inside. This has happened to me twice already. Ridiculous.
