Chevy Equinox Years to Avoid: Recalls vs. Reliability

Chevy’s Equinox is a road legend. But even the best vehicles face recalls. We review each generation of the compact SUV to determine which years to avoid (and which are better alternatives).

The Chevy Equinox debuted for the 2005 model year, looking to fill as a replacement for the legendary Blazer and Tracker SUVs. However, it was also entering one of the most competitive classes on the market, the saturated compact crossover SUV class.

The Equinox had to battle for the top spot in its class against its fellow American rival, the Ford Escape, which had already built a strong following in the four years since its release.

However, it was the Japanese-built Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V that put up the bulk of the fight. And fight they did, with the Equinox settling behind them for third place as Car and Driver‘s best-selling CUV of 2020.

The Equinox has consistently ranked well on sites like J.D. Power and Kelley Blue Book, receiving praise year after year for its second-row legroom and assortment of standard safety features.

What’s more, it hasn’t dropped below a four-star customer satisfaction rating across thousands of Vehicle History reviews between 2005 and 2020.

Though popular, some model years are more problematic than others, with some having as many as five recalls while others boast none.

However, just because one year has more recalls than another, doesn’t mean it’s one to avoid — no, there’s more to it than that.

Here we’ll dig through the recalls, complaints, crash tests, and consumer reviews to figure out which years to stay away from.

First-generation Equinox (2005-2009)

When the Equinox rolled into showrooms for the 2005 model year, it marked a notable first. All Chevy SUVs prior were built body-on-frame. For body-on-frame construction, we can think of the body and frame as two separate entities.

The Equinox, however, was built as a unibody, meaning the frame and body were “one.”

Cars and even other GM SUVs had unibody construction before the Equinox, however, this was the first Chevy SUV with unibody construction. It further distinguished itself from the Blazer by offering front- or all-wheel-drive, as opposed to the rear-wheel-drive Blazer.

It was initially powered by a 185 hp, 3.4L V6 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The standard engine achieved a max towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. and a combined mpg of 19 for both the FWD and AWD versions.

For those who exclusively buy “American” vehicles, the first-generation Equinox was not a great option. The engine was made in China, the transmission from Japan, and it was assembled in Canada.

However, the Sport models offered for the 2008-2009 model years provide 264 hp from a 3.6L V6 American-made power plant paired with an American-made six-speed automatic transmission.

First-gen. Equinox: Years to Avoid & Better Alternatives

  • Years to Avoid: (2005-2007)
  • Good Years: (2008)
  • Best Years: (2009)

Although the Equinox was very popular, it had some reliability issues. For starters, it received an average of over 550 complaints per model year, according to the NHTSA.

A common problem for all Equinoxes equipped with the 3.4L V6 is the lower intake gaskets failing where Chevy failed to realize that their newest DexCool super-coolant was eating at the intake manifold gasket. This is a rather common problem that can be diagnosed by the engine overheating, costing about $700 to fix.

Other problems included a faulty ignition for the 2005-2008 Equinoxes and a fuel pump failure for 2007. Although the fuel pump was recalled, the ignition problem was not. Note, the 2009 model year is the most reliable of the bunch with only 91 complaints.

As for safety, the 2005-2006 Equinoxes have received many complaints about a failing heater. Not only does this leave occupants cold, but the windshield cannot be defrosted, leading to a safety concern.

Other safety concerns include a faulty passenger airbag sensor. This seems to be an isolated problem as it only affected the 2007 model year. Chevy recalled and fixed this issue.

In addition to these safety concerns, it did not fare too well in the IIHS crash test. It received a marginal score for both the side and head restraints & seats categories.

Although the rear passengers fared alright, those in the front did not. Standard curtain airbags were added in 2009, further distinguishing the model year as the best choice.

Although the Equinox is fairly reliable, if you’re looking for a family car, the first-gen. Equinox cannot be considered due to its lack of safety.

Second-generation Equinox (2010-2017)

When the second-generation Equinox landed in showrooms for the 2010 model year, it brought with it some key refinements to the original. The new Equinox appeared to be more “car-like” as opposed to the previous generation.

Chevy replaced the old 3.5L V6 engine with a new 2.4L I4.

Obviously, this led to massive fuel economy gains, the new standard Equinox got seven more mpg than the last, for a combined mpg of 26.

However, there were still many similarities, such as standard FWD and optional AWD. Chevy also changed up the optional engine, they brought a new 3.0L V6 to replace the old 3.6L V6. Finally, Chevy made a six-speed automatic transmission standard.

When Chevy released the Equinox in 2010, they did not just “set it and forget it”, they constantly modified it to make it better. The first change came in 2011 when Chevy made the 3.0L V6 E85 compatible. The 2.4L I4 would follow suit shortly thereafter in 2012 when they made it E85 compatible as well.

Ironically, in 2013 the 3.0L V6 was replaced by a new 3.6L V6. Then, in 2016, one year before the second-gen. retired, Chevy gave it a massive refresh. The refresh brought with it much-needed restyling as well as making a backup camera standard for all Equinoxes.

Second-gen. Equinox: Years to Avoid & Better Alternatives

  • Years to Avoid: (2010-2012 & 2013-2017 w/2.4L I4 engine)
  • Best Years: (2013-2017 w/3.6L V6 engine)

To gain the good graces of those looking for a family hauler, the second-generation Equinox was extremely safe.

For MY 2010-2016, it received IIHS Top Safety Picks and even received a Top Safety Pick+ for 2014.

Unfortunately, the 2017 model year did not receive either of the awards. This is not because the 2017 model is unsafe, but rather because the IIHS started testing the LATCH ease of use.

LATCH is the child-anchoring system found in cars. So, in conclusion, all Equinoxes are very safe, but their LATCH system is not as intuitive as competitors.

Unfortunately, the safety of the Equinox might be all for not. It must be stated, the 2.4L I4 engine needs to be avoided at all costs. It does not matter whether it was the original non-E85 LAF (2010-2011) or the E85-friendly LEA (2012-2017). This engine accounted for almost all complaints on the NHTSA.

The problem was that it consumed excessive oil, causing a lack of lubrication. This of course could lead to a blown engine, which is a costly fix.

However, the V6 engines did not have this problem. The 3.0L V6 (2010-2012) suffered from failing timing chains, but the 3.6L V6 (2013-2017) did not. Another very common problem, which affected all model years and sparked an NHTSA investigation is wiper failure.

Third-generation Equinox (2018-Present)

The third-generation Equinox came into showrooms with a vengeance. Chevy did not mess around when redesigning the Equinox, and their efforts did not go unnoticed as it was their second best-seller, next to the Silverado.

The new Equinox was both smaller than the previous and lighter, losing 400 lbs. and shrinking 4.7 inches. The new Equinox came with several great technology upgrades such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Also, safety features were added, including a wide-angle backup camera, forward collision warning, and low-speed automatic braking. Chevy plans on further upgrading the Equinox for the 2022 model year with a redesign.

As was the same with the Equinoxes of the past, the third generation also offered drivers the choice between FWD or AWD.

However, for the first time in Equinox history, Chevy would offer three different engines, all four cylinders.

A 1.5L I4 Turbo was made the standard engine, whereas a turbodiesel 1.6L I4 and a 2.0L I4 Turbo were optional. The respective combined mpg for the three engines is 28, 25, and 32.

The premium 2.0T received a nine-speed automatic transmission, whereas the other two received a six-speed automatic. In 2020, the turbodiesel option was dropped due to a lack of demand and practicality.

Similarly, the 2.0T would be dropped for the 2021 model year, leaving the 1.5T as the sole survivor.

Third-gen. Equinox: Years to Avoid & Better Alternatives

  • Best Years: (2018-Present)

The third generation proved to be exceptionally safe, according to the IIHS crash tests. Although it only received IIHS Top Safety Picks for the 2020-2021 model years, the 2018-2019 models were safe as well.

In fact, the only thing that held them back from earning a Top Safety Pick was their headlights and LATCH system (yet again). Ironically, the best headlights offered on the Equinox come from the middle-of-the-road LT trim, not the top-of-the-line Premier trim.

Also, with the current generation averaging less than 100 complaints per model year, according to the NHTSA, the new Equinox is proving to be a reliable choice.

Chevy Equinox Model Years to Avoid

The Chevrolet Equinox is definitely a car to consider if you are looking for a cheap SUV with options and good mpg. At a used price of around $20,000 it certainly is affordable.

If you want something with good technology, space for the kids and groceries, as well as decent performance, this car will not disappoint.

Also, with the redesign releasing in about a year, it certainly may be something worth waiting for. That is if you like the new looks, driving assists, and the RS trim for your inner race car driver.

Although there are several great options such as the 2009 and 2013-2017 models with the 3.6L V6, or the 2018-present model years, the others are best left alone.

Specifically, the 2010-2017 models with the 2.4L I4 engine should be avoided at all costs due to excessive engine oil consumption that may lead to a hefty engine replacement repair bill.

The 2010-2012 models with the 3.0L V6 could end up in the repair shop just as quickly with its faulty timing chains that can potentially stretch and break.

As for the 2005-2007 model years, these should be avoided mostly due to heater problems, where neither the interior or windshield defroster will heat. While there’s no such thing as a vehicle that doesn’t break, if you’re shopping for a Chevy Equinox, avoid the years above, or hold on to your hat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Apr 26, 2022

What year is the most reliable Chevy Equinox?

Choosing the best years for the Chevy Equinox depends on the generation that you are looking at. If you want to get a first-generation Equinox to save some money then the years that you should look at are the 2008 and 2009. Chevrolet had fixed a lot of problems from the first years of the Equinox by 2008 and 2009 leading to them having the lowest number of complaints.

In the second generation for the Equinox, the years that you will want to look at are the 2013 through 2017 with the 3.6L engine. This engine is known to be much more reliable than the four-cylinder option, even though it does score worse on fuel economy. These are pretty good cars and are much more reliable than the first generation overall.

If you step up to one of the third generation options from 2018 onward any of the years seem to be good. Time will ultimately tell what happens to the cars from the third generation though as they get more miles on them.

Do Chevy Equinox have a lot of problems?

The Chevy Equinox is known to have a few problems that have come up over the years. The most common problem that is reported is that the A/C compressor fails. This will lead to the A/C system in your car not working, which can be very annoying and sometimes dangerous on hot summer days. It is a good idea to have that inspected every time that you have an oil change done to make sure that there is no excessive wear.

The next most common problem with the Chevy Equinox is more serious and the problem is a transmission fault. The 6-speed automatic transmission is known to have problems with a 35R clutch plate and when it fails it will result in the vehicle shifting hard shifting into 3rd gear, 5th gear, or reverse. The only way to fix it is to remove the transmission and replace the component.

The Equinox is not without its faults, but overall they are considered to be a pretty reliable SUV if you are looking for something to get you around town.

How long do Chevy Equinox engines last?

The lifespan of an engine in a Chevy Equinox varies depending on which engine you get. Overall the 3.6L V6 engine is considered to be extremely reliable. As long as you take care of this engine and keep up with oil changes and other regular services as they pop up you should have no problem getting over 200,000 miles out of it.

If you have the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine in your Equinox it will not last as long. These have been reported to fail at around 100,000 miles due to oil problems. These engines consume a lot of oil which leads to extra wear and tear on the internal components in the engine and has resulted in engines failing. Overall the 2.4L 4 cylinder is an engine that you should avoid when you are looking at an Equinox.

Chevrolet has been good at making V6 engines over the years and the 3.6L is just the latest in a long lineage of good V6 engines from them, but the 4 cylinder will not last that long. Ultimately the fuel savings is not worth driving with the smaller engine.

2023 Equinox Low Speed Driving Issues
We owned a new 2019 Equinox LT for 40 months and upgraded to a new 2023 LT. The 2019 looked good, operated as expected, was a pleasure to drive, had great mileage (30.8 mpg over the last 28,000+miles), and did not require any repairs. The new 2023 Equinox FWD is nice above 41 mph, but at lower speeds (25 to 29 mph and 38 to 40 mph) is not so great. Our issue was thought to be engine related / transmission related / computer related (electronic throttle control / ETC). After recording incidents over a few weeks, we also found that at start-up there was some vibration during the 10 - 15 seconds as engine idle drops from approx 1,300 to 950 rpm which makes me think that the programming of the ETC is the cause. While driving the vehicle at normal lower city speeds the vehicle shutters / vibrates when going from 25 to 29 mph (and sometimes around 38 to 40 mph). This creates a low frequency vibration / shake / deep hum sound (like a passing car with a very loud low bass sound from the radio speakers). Apparently, there is an operational gap / somewhat dead zone between the engagement of the turbo and the transmission torque converter that results in the issue / condition. My dealership indicated that Chevrolet was aware of the problem, but no fix was determined yet. They suggested just going faster to get past the speed ranges with the issues. Other operational safety concerns are when the vehicle lurches after the auto stop function, when the vehicle initially increases speed (in drive or in reverse to approx 8 mph) and when coasting / slowing down there is apparent downshift at 24 mph and 17 mph and the engine rpm seems to drop from 1350 at 35 mph to 1000 at 32 rpm and then increases again to 1350 at 25 mph. This activity seems similar to the semi-truck engine braking, but without the noise. Chevrolet said this was normal operation, but the current operation is clearly not normal at in-town speeds of under 41 mph. Owners should not be forced to speed thru the ranges and exceed in-town speed limits. Any 2023 (or 2021 & 2022) Equinox owners experiencing similar issues? Dealership response? Chevrolet response?

TRANSMISSION ISSUE X 2!!
Mine is a 2008 Equinox Sport Model AWD Loaded. 1 owner...literally a little old lady went to church, and groceries. Bought it in 2010 with a mere 9 K ( ( 9000 KMS since I am here in Ontario Canada ). I did ALL the required maintenance as recommended by GM, at the stealership...sorry dealership😁 No major issues at all...UNTIL it hit the 78 thousand KMS. Transmission was slipping. Jumping gears etc etc. Took to Mr. Transmission. Needed a tranny rebuild. This is in 2015. Never abused. Again all the stuff was done at GM as per the service manual indicator time. OK fix it cause wife loves it. $ 4, 9072 dollars later!! Pissed big time. Not a year later, some Transmission module went. NO WARRENTY by Mr. Tranny here in Kingston Ontario as a year had gone by and only 7 thousand KMS was driven. Another 1,600 dollars later. Fast forward to 2023. Still have Equinox. Minor stuff as in wear and tear. DO NOT go to the dealership at all. Found a good GM Tech that I pay cash to fix it when it needs something. It now has 131,500 KMS on it. Spray it annually ( has been since day 1 ) with Krown Rust Control. NO RUST. No surface rust. No blistering spots. Until something MAJOR goes, gonna keep driving it. I don't know, but this one was not made on a Friday or Monday. Minus the tranny issues, no big expenses to date. Just my 2 cents folks.

Back seat is too upright in the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox LT
We had a problem with the braking system where we were told to replace all four sensors which cost $200 each to replace plus labor of $100 for each tires which is $1200 total. The gas mileage is good but not the best. The rear view is kind of limit for some reason the way the car is designed. You can't see much when backing up the car. This 2005 model has problem with the emblem on the front trim of the car which came off from the car wash and damaged worth 195 dollars. With the traction control on, you can feel the car making sounds when making turn around the turnabout. The road is dry, not wet and even the car is not off the road either. The back seat is not very comfortable for long road trip because the seat is straight up. It is not even slanted enough to let your head rest while taking a nap during the long road trip. The key only open one door on the driver side while the weather was snowing or raining making the other person or persons waiting longer to get inside the car.

2015 Chevy Equinox LS
I purchased a 2015 Equinox LS 2.4L ECOTECH FLEX in March 2019. I bought a warranty $3555.00 as well. On February 15, 2020 my engine blew. The adjuster for warranty company never looked at my vehicle and immediately denied my ability to use my warranty, blaming the PVC. However, the PVC wasn't plugged. Oil consumption issues due to the rings which CHEVROLET knows about. Instead of a recall, they put out a service bulletin that I wasn't aware of. So, I paid over $4500 for an engine. I had a near empty gallon of oil and a full gallon of oil in my car. The vehicle had oil when the rear seal blew, it was all over my car and ruined my starter. Well, 25 days ago, my engine started acting crazy. This time the timing chain popped, cam sprocket wasn't turning and yes, this interference2.4L Ecotech Flex is once again SHOT! CHEVROLET should NEVER receive another bailout from taxpayers. TRASHY GOVERNMENT MOTORS!!!

2019 Chevy Equinox LT FWD - Very Good Car, a Few Drawbacks
I'm in the last few weeks of my '19 Equinox lease and have the following observations. Off the bat, the worst aspect of the '19 Equinox is the auto stop/start feature. I have a '17 Ford Escape that also has this feature but there is a dash button that shuts it off. The Equinox does not have the button. The 170 hp 1.5 liter engine is good around town but it runs out of breath on the highway. The ride is a little rough, as the suspension doesn't do a lot to soak up potholes. Other than these issues, this has been a very good car. Its been extremely reliable, comfortable to drive and a good handler. Fuel economy is the best feature, as I have observed 27.5 mpg since the beginning of the lease.

I went from a 1999 Ford Windstar full-size van to my first new car - a 2019 Honda CRV. A year and 4 months later, I traded in my CRV for a 2020 Chevy Equinox. Both SUVs were much tighter - no arm rest, where do I put my purse? I love certain features both Subs have, such as side mirrors light up when a car is along side you in your blind spot. The Chevy Equinox is more luxurious and the radio/phone display is more user-friendly than the CRV. I wish both SUVs had a larger gas tank. The Equinox is a little roomier for driver and passenger comfort. I love these new SUVs!!!

2022 equinox, brake, electrical issues
I have a 2022 equinox with 4k miles on it. Brakes been grinding since 1 week old and low miles. Just had it at shop and all looks “ok, it’s a known issue but there’s no fix” So I’m supposed to drive around with brakes grinding all the time now and wait for a fix?! It’s an issue on 21&22 models so I don’t see a fix coming soon. Brand new car with issues again. . Also my radio was going crazy, wouldn’t turn off was changing the channel and volume itself. Never buying a Chevy again! My front end collision warning light comes on randomly for no reason.

Electrical. Brakes skipping, major evaporative leak. Problems with 2006 Chevrolet Equinox
Just try replacing a front light bulb, you have to remove the entire front panel and be careful that you don't accidently break the clips. Make sure that your parked in front of an auto parts store when you decide to change a burnt out light bulb. Faulty electrical seems to be predominant on the passenger side of vehicle. Dash lights coming on for no reason. Car over heating having to have sensors replaced. Having problems with the brakes fading and skipping. Being told there is nothing wrong with pads or brakes just some sand? Which they supposedly blew out.

I like my Chevrolet equinox due to the height of the vehicle and it is comfort level. However, it has broken down a few times including the gear shift and timing cover gaskets. The radiator has also experienced issues. I only just hit 100,000 miles but feel I have had to throw a lot of money towards repairs. 2007 Chevrolet Equinox LT overheating and service traction control and/or stabilitrackissues.
I've noticed that a lot of people have been having trouble with their Equnox's over heating. I think there needs to be a recall on the wires/connector that go to the fans. Most seem to have a short in them. So check this 1st if yours is overheating. Also if your "service stabilitrack" light comes on and it starts running poorly for no apparent reason you should check the throttle body and the O2 sensers.

I have a 2019 Equinox. The turn radius is terrible and I wish I had noticed this problem before buying. The AC and Heater releases a horrible chemical smell and I can’t drive my car on very hot or cold days. I am waiting on a recall. I call the dealer almost every week. Very disappointed.

I'm not sure about newer models of the Equinox, but most of the '06s experience an overheating issue at least once in their lives. It turns into a very expensive ordeal!
The only negative are the funky blind spots it has (due to Its design) and three expensive repairs my Equinox needed (thermostat replaced twice; fuel pump replaced twice; and engine head gasket once) all before the vehicle turned 10 years old. Aside from that I love my Equinox!

The 2010 Chevy Equinox drives well and it has many safety features.
I do like the Chevy Equinox, but my particular one has had some major issues. The 2010 year had an oil leak "bulletin" on it that I didn't know about when I bought the car. It took some time to figure out what was going on and why I had to keep adding oil.

What I dislike most is how loud the 2006 Chevrolet Equinox runs.
The older models of the equinox are not as good as the newer versions for many reasons. One major one for me is the fact that it runs extremely loud on the highway. It feels as though you are driving with the windows down without even opening the windows.

Oil leaking and reading problems with the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ.
The car leaks oil because of the rear main seal. This is a problem with all equinox. The oil light does not notify when oil is low. The dipstick to check the oil does not work correctly. The car burns oil. All the problems have to do with oil.

Not all models are bad
I have. 2008 equinox sport it had an issue with the engine harness the connector to the crank sensor falls apart from heat I got it for $1000 because the previous owner was stumped nothing has failed since then 20,000 and some miles later

2007 Chevrolet Equinox overheating in traffic.
The car overheats constantly and the A.C doesn't. I thought it was just me having bad luck but unfortunately I talk to friend who has a similar cars and they have the same issues. I don't know if it is something with that make and model.

My wife and I bought our 2018 Premier Equinox used in 2021with a little over 30,000 miles on it. We are very happy with our purchase. Very roomy and comfortable. Great gas mileage. Excellent safety features. Chevrolet got it right.

I know there have been some complaints about this model. But mine is now 5 years old and can verify to never having a single problem with it! All I do is change the oil at proper intervals and schedule my regular warranty checkups.

Don't buy 2006 Chevrolet Equinox ever.
I like the room in the interior. I don't like how most everything seems to fall off it. I had a blend door issue, the drivers window is off track, one of the rear door lifts broke off. The dashboard looks like a Christmas tree.

GM does not back there product
2017 Equinox. In short GM does not back up there product. Engine blew at 126,000. GM offered no cost assistance. Yes it was out of warranty but only 26,000 over the extended I had purchased. Bad customer service. My last Chevy.

Have a 2013 Chevy Equinox that rolled off the delivery truck...absolute junk! Should have been 2 recalls on it. Burning oil too fast and bad timing chain. Didn't get either. Never buy Tawainese c**p marked as American !

These little SUV r junk
Have a 2012 with 77,000 miles driving home it just quit. GM will not do anything about it ,can’t find motors for them & if you do you can’t afford them. I would recommend u never buy one.

2006 Chevrolet Equinox has 170, 000 miles on it and it gets 25 mpg highway.
My vehicle has a power steering issue which is most likely an electrical problem. Additionally, it is a/c is not working, it needs a new front left side axel, and has an overheating problem.

114k miles.99% are highway miles due to daily commute of an hour drive down the hwy. Now it has cracked piston. Unreal I babied this car and bought brand new off showroom floor. Never again.

Great car, just some issues: 2012 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ
Some of the well know problems for my Equinox is needing new ball joints. I also had an oil leak that almost blew up my engine. Once those were fixed (covered by warranty) my car is great!

Windshield cracked at the rear view mirror for no reason. Chevrolet pitched in $380.00 for the replacement cost of $ 838.00 . Soft glass issue. Over all 4.5 stars at 37000 miles

A/C does not work in my 2005 Chevrolet Equinox.
It's a first year run of the model so it has a bunch of issues. The a/c is broke. The windshield is leaking and it need new tires. Other than that it's an ok car.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox L is a good car, issues with oil leakage.
It is reliable, but have had a few problems with oil leakage, which I heard is an issue with this model of vehicle. This is my second equinox as well.

A known problem from chevy. Car burned all the oil between oil changes and engine ran dry ruining it. No warning light nothing.

2006 Chevrolet Equinox is a spacious vehicle that gets the job done.
Constant problems whether it be breaks, oil, battery, or something with the tires. But other than that it gets the job done.

It has several mechanical issues with the brakes and heating /cooling system.

The most important thing that others should know about my 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, is that it has some mechanical issues and overheats really quick.
My car is currently not working due to mechanical issues.
