In this article, we’ll take a look at these and other common problems with the Dodge Nitro, and discuss appropriate repairs, so you can make an informed buying decision.

More About the Dodge Nitro SUV

The Dodge Nitro was made between 2007 and 2011. This five-passenger SUV had both rear and four-wheel drive options. It’s known for its broad hood, strong shoulders and upright roof pillars that give the SUV a stable, strong look.

Even though it had a short run, the Nitro had several upgrades during its production years. A new trailer sway control system and rear parking sensors were added in 2008. Improvements to the brakes and suspension happened in 2009, with heated side-view mirrors the following year.

Though the Nitro left production in 2011, its solid design means many used models are currently in the market. Buyers need to be aware of some common problems with the Dodge Nitro before making a purchase.

Transmission and Computer Problems

On October 22, 2018, Ethan M. posted on VehicleHistory.com that his 2010 Dodge Nitro had a complete transmission failure at 65,900 miles. This costly problem was repaired with a rebuilt transmission. He also reported needing a new computer at 45,000 miles.

This owner was able to have these problems repaired, but the repair costs were quite high.

Electrical Problems

Several owners of 2008 Dodge Nitros reported the electrical system suddenly failing. One owner stated that, while driving, the car’s horn started blaring and windshield wipers started moving, with all dash warning lights blinking on and off.

When this happened, the owner lost power steering and brakes. After inspection, the owner found the wiring inside the engine had gotten extremely hot. Replacing the wiring was the only solution.

Tire Damage Problems

When you buy a new vehicle, you expect to get several thousands of miles of use out of the tires, but problems with the 2009 Dodge Nitro have led many owners to report tire problems. Specifically, the retaining nut on the valve stem can fall off and damage the inside of the tire.

If the owner doesn’t realize this happened, the tire can go flat quickly while driving. Repair requires replacement of the retaining nut with a stainless-steel nut. You’ll also need to replace any damaged tires.

Vibration and Steering Problems

In a review posted on September 19, 2019, Coleman C. reported a strange shaking and vibration of the steering wheel when driving a 2010 Dodge Nitro at speeds over 45 mph. This made it difficult to hold the vehicle straight on the road.

This kind of steering problem can clearly cause driving difficulties, but the owner did not report a repair solution.
