Dodge Ram pickups have been around for a while and receive mostly positive reviews. They’re one of the big 3 names spanning both light- and heavy-duty.
However, they have their fair share of recalls, but is a TIPM recall one of them?
No. There are no Dodge Ram TIPM recalls. However, there is a TIPM recall on the 2011 Dodge Durangos and the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees.
Thankfully, in this article, we’ll explain why this is important for anyone that owns a Dodge Ram. But first, what exactly is a TIPM?
What is a Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM)?
The totally integrated power module (TIPM for short) is an electrical component on many vehicles such as Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler products. The TIPM is like the brain for all of the onboard electronics.
So everything on the vehicle that is electronic has to go through the TIPM before it can function.
So if the TIPM is faulty or malfunctions, it could cause a whole myriad of problems that range from annoying to inconvenient to downright dangerous.
That’s why so many people are concerned about the TIPM issue, as only a small few have actually received any solutions or positive outcomes, which we will talk about in a moment.
What Causes the TIPM to Go Bad?
The TIPM could go bad if not enough fuel is getting to the fuel pump relay. This causes it to hard start or to not start at all. When the fuel pump stays on, it drains the battery and the fuel pump starts to deteriorate until the vehicle won’t start.
The Signs of a TIPM Component Failure
There are several telltale signs that the TIPM in your vehicle might be about to fail.
- The vehicle stalls while you are driving.
- The starter turns over but won’t start.
- The vehicle is getting hard to start.
- The battery dies and when replaced with a new one, that one will die too.
- The car acts like it is out of gas even when it has a full tank.
- The horn goes off randomly.
- The power windows stop working.
- The doors lock and unlock by themselves.
- The airbags deploy randomly or not at all.
- The fuel pump won’t turn off and burn out.
What Fiat-Chrysler Vehicles were Built With Suspected TIPM Issues?
There are many vehicles built with potential TIPM issues. However, only the models we mentioned above have actually been recalled.
Here is a list of the Chrysler vehicles that were manufactured between 2007 and 2014 that could possibly have TIPM issues.
- 2008 Chrysler 300
- 2007-2015 Grand Voyager
- 2007-2015 Town & Country
- 2007-2015 Dodge Durango
- 2011-2012 Dodge Grand Caravan
- 2007-2015 Dodge Journey
- 2007-2015 Dodge Nitro
- 2007-2015 Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500
- 2007-2015 Dodge Ram Cargo Van
- 2007-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
- 2007-2015 Jeep Liberty
- 2007-2015 Jeep Wrangler
Interestingly enough, all of these models were petitioned to be included in a lawsuit. However, most of the petitions were denied except for a few, which we will talk about next.
The Chrysler Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) Class Action Lawsuit
A class-action lawsuit regarding purchased or leased 2011-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles that had defective TIPMs was the only one that came to pass.
This class-action lawsuit was settled in June of 2015 and provided a wide variety of settlement benefits to the owners of these vehicles for the fuel pump relay repairs. However, this class action lawsuit did not include any Dodge Ram trucks.
Where Can I Find the Dodge Ram TIPM Recalls?
There are currently no Dodge Ram TIPM recalls. However, you can check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website to see if they do issue a recall for the TIPM component going forward.
Additionally, you can check the NHTSA website periodically for other Dodge Ram recalls or any other vehicle recalls for that matter.
To check for recalls on any given vehicle, enter the VIN into the NHTSA website form and hit enter. The website will immediately show you any open recalls for that vehicle.
What Should I Do if My Vehicle has an Open Recall?
If there is an open recall for the VIN you entered, simply call the Dodge customer service line at 1-800-521-2779.
Or, if you prefer, you can call the Chrysler customer service line at 1-800-853-1403. The customer service representative will tell you where to go and exactly what needs to be done to get your recall issue fixed.
