History of the Ford 2.3 Engine

As fuel efficiency and emissions controls became a top priority in the 1970s, Ford came up with their 2.3L powerplant. The first design of this engine featured a 96.04-mm bore and a 79.4-mm stroke.

Gas Millage on my 2019 Ford Ranger
I now have 44k miles on my 2019 Ford Ranger XLT. Purchased new. I average about 18mpg.The best on a road trip averaging 75 miles per hour is about 21 mpg. Around town It gets from 16 to 18 mpg. My engine has been updated ( at 10k) with Ford Performance 50 HP boost programming. The engine has always had turbo lag. I DO NOT like the 10 speed transmission in this package. When going about 30mph its in 7th gear ( about 1300rpms ) and it makes the truck seem sluggish. I've had it reprogrammed to the factory specs. The only saving grace is that it can be shifted manually. I WOULD NOT purchase a new one with the 10 speed automatic transmission unless it has been reprogrammed to time with the engine RPMs taken into effect. I would also like to point out that I have a 2020 GT Mustang with the 10 speed transmission that works beautifully.
