Honda Civic Air Conditioning Recalls To Know About

Tim G
Jan 22, 2021

Hondas are known for their reliability, and the Civic is no exception. However, even the greats have issues, as is the case with the air conditioning in some Civics.

Have there been any Honda Civic AC recalls?

Though there have been no AC recalls on Honda Civics, a Honda Civic owner filed a lawsuit in 2019 that claimed holes in condenser tubes caused the vehicle AC to fail in Honda Civics, model year 2016-2018.

Black 2018 Honda Civic From Front Side

Honda released the technical service bulletin #19-091 on August 9, 2019 that details how factory defective air conditioner condensers in 2016-2018 Civics caused damage to air conditioners. As a result of the lawsuit, Honda extended its AC warranty to Ten (10) years and unlimited miles.

TSB 19-091 States:

“American Honda is extending the warranty on the A/C condenser to 10 years from the original date of purchase with unlimited miles. This warranty only covers vehicles that have a defective A/C condenser from the factory. The A/C condenser was not manufactured to specification.

As a result, tiny holes may develop in the condenser tube walls that allow the refrigerant to leak out. The warranty extension does not apply to any vehicle that has a leaking condenser due to foreign object damage.”

Have Honda Civics Been Covered by an AC Extended Warranty?

Every Honda Civic model year 2016-2018 is covered by a warranty extended to 10-years from the vehicle’s original purchase date along with unlimited miles.

The extended AC warranty does not apply to vehicles that have a condenser leak caused by a foreign object. Vehicles that have been declared a total loss by an insurer or financial institution or sold for salvage are not covered.

What Should You Do if Your AC is Covered?

Despite the fact there is no recall for AC units on Civics and Honda has extended its warrant to a 10-year period, there are a few details owners of Honda Civic should be aware of.

Due to the fact certain Honda Civic air conditioner condensers were not constructed to Honda’s specifications, tiny holes have developed in the condenser tube walls of a few AC units, allowing refrigerant to leak out.

Be sure and do a VIN status inquiry before calling an authorized Honda dealer to guarantee your air conditioner is covered.

Title: AC Malfunctioning in 2017 Honda Civic: A Frustrating Experience
As an owner of a 2017 Honda Civic, I have recently experienced a distressing issue with the air conditioning system in my vehicle. The AC malfunction started as a minor inconvenience but quickly escalated into a major problem affecting multiple components. Contacting Honda Motor Company for assistance, I was informed that they would only cover the replacement of the condenser, despite the issue being linked to the refrigerant. The source of the malfunction lies in the refrigerant, specifically the R-1234f, which appears to be incompatible with the AC system components. As a result, leaks have developed, contaminating other vital AC components and causing unnecessary strain on the system. Regrettably, Honda Motor Company and the dealership that sold me the car have not taken full responsibility for the diagnostic inspections and replacements of the damaged components due to leakage. My experience has been frustrating, as I have had to bear the burden of replacing the condenser, air compressor, and evaporator, all stemming from the issues caused by the refrigerant in the first place. It is disheartening to witness Honda dismissing these concerns and leaving owners to handle the expenses on their own. As a loyal Honda customer, I expected better from the company in terms of addressing known issues and standing behind their products. The lack of accountability and limited support in handling this AC malfunction has left a sour taste in my mouth. It is disheartening to see Honda brushing aside these problems and leaving owners to shoulder the financial burden. AC Technician Reply: As a Certified AC Technician, I fully sympathize with the issues faced by Honda Civic owners due to the R-1234f refrigerant's incompatibility with the AC system components. I can confirm that the refrigerant leaks have a cascading effect, leading to cross-contamination of other AC components and increased strain on the entire system. It is unfortunate to witness the consequences of this issue and the subsequent financial burden it places on vehicle owners. The fact that the condenser, air compressor, and evaporator had to be replaced due to the refrigerant leak is a clear indication of the severity of the problem. I would like to emphasize that Honda Motor Company should take appropriate measures to address this known issue, as it directly impacts the safety, performance, and reliability of their vehicles. Owners should not be left to bear the cost of these repairs, considering that the root cause lies with a manufacturing defect.

No recall? Honda lied to me!
My parents and other family relatives drive Honda, but I seem to be only the one having issues with mistreatments from Honda dealerships and corporate & customer services staff in the last few years. My 2016 Honda Civic's AC Condenser stopped working the past several weeks to maybe 1~2 months. I thought it was the increasing heat of the summer that was too strong, but when the heat wave hit and I could not even last an hour driving in my car with the AC blowing warm air at the highest power at the lowest temperature setting last weekend, I realized something was wrong with my AC. I took my car to a mechanic the next day and was told it could be fixed. Feeling it was an emergency --since I have to drive 40 miles 1 way to work so that's about 80+ miles roundtrip if I'm lucky & don't have to take alternate routes to detour from traffics--, I agreed to get the AC fixed. Upon the repairs being completed, I learned from the mechanic that Honda knows of the AC condenser issue and was told file a claim with Honda to get reimbursement for what I paid to the mechanic. Tell me why! I had to spend the last 3,4 days to get direct contact with my "case manager" of my case number and be told via phone that my claims being denied because I should have gotten a recall notice from Honda and therefore should have known to take the car to a Honda dealership. Only! I always get random mail from Honda with my name and telling me to trade in my car for a newer Honda car; or this deal or that deal on Honda parts to upgrade my car. I only ever gotten 1 recall notice at my address, in 2019, and I did take it into a Honda dealership in same year 2019, for the people there to make me wait hours for a maintenance check and then be harassed into trying to buy & pay for extra stuff! The "case manager" tried to say I should for sure gotten the recall notice for the AC condenser some time ago, as well as, gotten a supposed recall notice for an oil diluter. News to me! On both recall notices! I told the "case manager" that I never got any of those recall notices for the 2 issues. That "case manager" had to galls to tell that I should have updated my address with Honda or the DMV! That's ridiculous because I know I did update my address with Honda and DMV; the latter twice! For a license renewal and again for when I was getting a real ID! I think it's ridiculous that I can't get a reimbursement for repairs to fix issues the manufacture caused!

Replaced Twice Now
I have a 2016 Honda Civic. My air conditioner condenser went in August of 2019. I had received a letter that they were defective and that if it was in fact defective that I could have it replaced. Mine was defective but the service advisor tired today tell me a pipe that was not included would not be included and I would have to pay $250 to also replace that. We looked the part up online, it was $50 so I had to ask for the service manager and fight with him to only pay for the part and not the labor. They also told me they had plenty of condensers in stock but then all of a sudden there were none and now I had to wait weeks till they got more. Fast forward to August 2020 and my air conditioner went again. Now I had inside information from a friend who works for parts at a Honda dealership who told me that they still don’t know what’s causing the defects and that they just keep replacing the condensers with the defective ones. I bring my car to the dealership. They service advisor tries to tell me he’s never heard of someone having theirs go twice. I keep my mouth shut for now till they call me and tell me that yet again, the condenser is defective except this time he was trying to say I’m responsible for the cost of the new one. That’s when I told him no, because it’s defective, they know it’s defective and they tried everything to get me to pay $2200 to have it replaced. I had to threaten to call lawyer to get them to fix it at no charge. They were trying to tell me that only the factory one was covered, which is bullshit because even to this day they keep just replacing them with the same faulty ones. He tried to tell me that’s not the case because it has an updated part number. Again, bullshit. Honda can update the part # but it’s still the same part. Please don’t fall into their traps. I have a feeling it’s going to need to be replaced again in 2 years. Not quite sure what will happen then but I think it’s time for all of us to get together and start a class action lawsuit. They need to stand behind their faulty condensers and not try to lie and mislead people about it. Imagine if I hadn’t known that important piece of information. I love my car but this makes me never want to buy another Honda ever again.

2017 with 35,000 miles Honda Civic Issues
I am having the same a/c problem everyone describes here, but I have more to tell. When I bought the car, like others, I reported that the a/c was not near as cold as my previous Santa Fe. They told me that it was within specs. I want to include another problem since someone else has likely had the same. When I turned the key to start the car, there was a whirring/moaning-type sound that stopped as quickly as I released the key. Of course, they could not replicate, so they concluded that it was due to another problem the cars were having with oil mixing into the fuel. I do not remember the part they replaced (something to do with gas and oil), abd they did an oil change as part of the fix. The noise continued, and I managed to record it with my phone. It turned out to be the VALVE BODY, which was replaced under warranty. Then I noticed that my heat and a/c both made strange noise when on, which kept me wondering what was wrong. Now my a/c is blowing hot airand taking very long to put out any cold. This just happened so I do not know if it eventually gets cold enough to cool the car, but I'm not running it out of concern to cause more damage. Have an appointment for tomorrow. It's just not right that they are aware of the problem yet expect the customers to pay any part of the diagnosis or repair. They are inconveniencing us, so the diagnostics should be a courtesy whether it is deemed as the known problem or not. Rightfully, they should do a recall and replace all defective a/c units and associated parts in FULL. If not a recall, then the a/c should be given a life-time warranty. The units are defective, and they know it. They should give free oil changes or free tire rotations as an apology for putting us through this. My car with 35,000 miles should not have any problems!

Civic Not-so-SuperStar
Honda Civic, 2018, 4-door. Air Conditioner started blowing hot air on driver side (ironic) and is blowing cooler on passenger side This started about 2.5 months ago, beginning of June '21. I live in Phoenix area. Adding insult to injury, I'm driving around with what feels like a hair dryer blowing on me, while the passenger stays somewhat coolish. I've avoided taking it in, I work from home. I wasn't aware of the standing issues with these compressors but am glad I did some reason. I am going to take it in though out of necessity tomorrow. Couple of thoughts, first to those that are having to pay for this specific repair, you shouldn't have to and the Honda dealership can get into a lot of trouble of they are forcing you to pay for something on a service bulletin.Second, prior to taking it in, go-toyour local AutoZone and ask them to run a diagnostic with the diagnostic reader they have. That will give you an idea of what might be going on prior to going into your mechanic. Third, make sure you read/explore the following (and maybe take it with you): 1) Link to the government NHTSA site describing the Bulletin, what is covered and what to look for. This is an important document. Https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10163796-0001.pdf 2) iN VIN Status inquiry. This link will provide you with information about what it if your vehicle is entitled to as far as recalls and bulletins are concerned. Https://owners.honda.com/service-maintenance/recalls I'll write back after I find out what the dealership says...

If you are dealing with a faulty condenser that has caused greater AC issues, call American Honda and fight it first!
Same story as everyone here- 2018 Civic with about 40k miles on it. AC stopped blowing cool air. Took it to our local Honda dealership (where we purchased from) who diagnosed a leaking condenser PLUS compressor and evaporator. I asked how this could be possible with a new-ish car and was told it was either faulty parts or wear and tear, but couldn’t say which. They refused to acknowledge the possibility that the faulty condenser could cause the rest of the AC system to fail. You don't need to be an auto mechanic to know that the faulty part is going to wear down the rest of the system! They quoted us over $3k to fix and would not work on the price whatsoever. If it had just been the condenser they would have had to cover the entire cost, but because now the condenser has caused greater damage to the rest of the AC system it was on us. They would not even cover the diagnostic fee, which they would have had it just been the condenser. There was no logic to it- they literally told us to take it up with Honda, so we did. Called American Honda (800-999-1009) and within 4 days of creating a case our case manager agreed to cover about 75% of the cost. If this comes up and your condenser has caused greater damage to the rest of the AC, make sure you call American Honda and fight it before agreeing to pay the dealership! It's way easier to do this than trying to get reimbursed. They are trying to avoid further legal action. Do not pay these ridiculous fees for a problem that Honda created.

2017 Honda Civic Hatchback AC compressor
I purchased my car in LA Cerritos Norm Reeves back in October 2016. It was brand new had no real issues with AC until this year 2023 in March. My car had about 96,000 miles on it and I took care of it really good for example always had the oil change done on time and all the updates a car with this mileage needed on time. Until the AC stopped working out of the nowhere then I had it checked at Lute Riley in Richardson, Texas because I moved here back in beginning of 2022. They charged me about $180 just to get a diagnostics on the AC to see what exactly was malfunctioning and they told me if I decide to fix it there they would apply this charge to the total cost after it had been fixed. They fixed it and it worked good until today 09/16/23 so i took it again to Lute Riley and they said to bring it back on Tuesday because they could not work on it today until Tuesday. The only good thing about this is the AC compressor has warranty and mind you I had paid about $2,000 in total to first get this AC compressor fixed. I been reached out by American Honda Motor Co in Torrance but they are taking more than 12 weeks to get my reimbursement check processed and mailed to me. I had a good experience with my car up until this year I can't believe what a headache its been. Honda owner had to take them to lawsuit to extend the defect on the AC compressor part(s) but thank God for that Honda owner for doing that, seriously.

Ac blowing warm air, says compressor & evaporator leaking.
Just took my 2016 Hinda Civic (62k miles) for scheduled service. At check-in, I mentioned the the service advisor that my ac wasn't getting cold, or taking too long to get cold. The service advisor said that there could be an issue with the condenser and that it will be fixed under warranty if that is the issue and that there will be a $169 diagnostic fee if it is something else. The advisor said "9 times out of 10 it is the condenser" Well I guess I was the 1 out of 10 with the other ac issue, right? Not after seeing all the posts online. So he reveals that it is actually a leaking evaporator and compressor and the repair quote was $4050 after taxes and labor. Seriously? I was speechless. How does it seem normal to have to make a 4 thousand dollar repair to a car that was purchased brand new just 5 years ago? Just got off the phone with Honda support and was told that only the condenser is covered, but everything will need to be out of pocket. Wonderful. I can't really afford to pay 4k to fix my AC... Guess I'll just be driving with my windows download the rest for this car's life (in the Florida heat) Thanks Honda. I don't think I can trust this company moving forward. Do the right thing and make a recall for the entire AC unit or at least make the repair more affordable. Is there a way to get another lawsuit going or what?

Unreal Honda
2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, 40,000 miles and a year left in my lease… I used to sell Honda’s, sold myself my first brand new car! I complained not long after i got the car to my dealer whom I worked for that Ac didn’t seem cold. They informed me of the new Freon isn’t like the old days. Well ok hmmm…. Last month driving from Illinois to Florida I noticed my AC was blowing hot air… checked everything no cold air…. Little later into driving 1200 mile trip I hear rattling in my dash… next thing I know, white stuff comes blowing out my vents… I pulled over off the interstate to figure out what was going on… IT WAS ICE CHIPS, like slushee ice coming out of my vents…. Stopped for the night, happened next day AGAIN… ugh now living in Florida… take it to the dealership…. The called and asked if I bought an extended warranty… umm no… I’m leasing…. Why would I do that? Proceeds to tell me that it’s the compressor not the condenser therefore not covered under the extended 10 year warranty they just put out there. I said that’s not acceptable, now the called and said the regional manager said it would be 50/50 because i’m 4,000 miles over my warranty in a lease…. WOW… I sold these cars to people and own one… This is completely unacceptable Honda. Please help!

2017 Honda Civic a/c
I am writing this review sonpeople have some hope.. Last week my ac just stopped blowing cold air. Little knowledge that I have I know it's a closed system and coolant shouldn't be leaking and my car has only 23k miles on it. So I read all of these reviews so great full for them almost all negative which gave me needed info. I went online made an appt with Tempe Honda in Arizona described the issue and referenced the Honda TSB #19-019 that addresses the condenser issue extending the warranty on all 2016-2018 civics to 10 yrs unlimited miles due to condenser failure. I got a call back immediately to bring my car in at 9 am by 1 pm they had replaced the condenser free of charge zero out of pocket and I drove away with cool air blasting in this 100+ Phoenix weather. So pleased with the ease of the process preferred not having the issue at all but it appears Honda took their time but ultimately is correcting the issue at the corporate and dealership level. So go informed. I do see some people had continued issues with 2nd replacements of condenser and or failing compressors so I hope my issue is resolved living in the desert need ac all yr round. I will update if any related issue comes up in future. 4 stars cuz initial bad manufacturing issue poor quality control for 3 yrs.

2018 Honda Civic Has A Compressor Failure
I have a 2018 Honda Civic, only 50k miles and I found cool air doesn't work last month. I went to Honda dealership and they told me to schedule an appointment for inspection. I went I just want to know if there is any extended warranty. They told me that there is an extended warranty for condenser failure. The diagnostic process is $399, it will be waived if I decided to repair my car in the dealership if it is the condenser, or I would need to pay from my own pocket. If I don't want to fix it in the dealership after the diagnostic, I have to pay the $399 for the process, which to me is nothing. So I went to my familiar mechanic store and they told me it looks like a compressor leak, but it is kinda unacceptable since it's a newer car for only a little bit over three years... It will cost me about $1300 to replace the compressor. I called Honda dealership and their price for compressor replacement is about $1800. I'm upset I have to replace the compressor at the 4th year I bought my car, and I'm a little bit worried if there will be more troubles in the future. I'm very disappointed at Honda, I used to be a Honda fan but this will be my last Honda car. Does anybody have an idea on what should I do? Is here any other option except to fix it from my own pocket?=(

The 2016 Honda Civic is a lemon, both Honda Denton TX, and the Corporation are useless, and a joke
I have a Honda civic 2016 with 85k. I'm not going to waste your time or mine complaining about the same problem everyone here is complaining about, because it's the same thing, an AC blowing hot air, and the Honda dealers diagnosing condenser issues. It should be NOTED that on this page, everyone says the same thing when they take their cars to the Honda dealer, all the diagnoses are the same, LEAKING compressor and LEAKING condenser… WHAT A COINCIDENCE RIGHT? Long story short; the corporation washed their hands (DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THE CORPORATION CALLS “ GOOD WILL”) and the dealership didn't help me at all, they just wanted me to pay $3000 for something that is Honda's responsibility due to a manufacturing defect. Corporations now days don't care about the quality of their products or customer satisfaction, they don't stand behind their products anymore, all they want is the money. It is sad to see that Japan, once a very proud country, producing quality products, is following suit in the example of mediocrity that is so common today. Very sad indeed. On another note, do not buy from the Honda dealer in Denton, TX, the customer service is terrible, they are just as useless as the Honda Corporation. In summary, DO NOT BUY A HONDA PERIOD, BUY GERMAN CARS.

2018 Honda Civic A/C
My gf has a 2018 Civic which, like many have experienced, suddenly had the AC start blowing out hot air. After replacing the refrigerant last week, the very next day the cold air was gone. A local shop specializing in AC told me that he's seen a lot of Honda customers with the same issue. Thanks to many of you who shared your experiences in this blog, I followed the advice to contact American Honda first before calling the dealership. Armed with the information y'all shared with your experiences, I informed the representative that I was aware of Service Bulletin 19-091 extending warranty of defective condensers. She opened a case number for me, informed me of the additional posting of Service Bulletin 23-039 extended warranty covering compression shaft leaks, and adviced me to take the car to the dealer. I brought the car to Gardena Honda where my gf purchased her Civic. The service tech, Dale, was very knowledgeable with the issue and was very efficient in getting it diagnosed. (Probably didn't hurt to have a corporate case number noted on the vehicle record). He pointed out that the problem was a faulty condenser. Thank God it wasn't the evaporator! It was replaced with a new updated condenser. Diagnosis and repair performed under warranty.

Have gone in 6 times
Hi everyone, I bought my first car - a 2016 Honda Civic EX-L. It is great and it runs amazing. But it has had so many AC problems. I went to my local honda dealer 3x in the first 3 years. The first two times, it was covered by warranty - the third time I had to pay for a diagnosis fee but they didn't diagnose anything. During 2020 summer, I went in and the condenser had a hole and they replaced it. During 2021 summer, I went in and it was the condenser and AC clutch. They replaced it with American Honda's Good Faith so I didn't have to pay. Now summer of 2022, it no longer works and is something else (High Pressure AC line). I'm still waiting to hear back from American Honda - but I can't believe it broke down again. The service people say the same things, 'man made objects aren't supposed to last forever', but I live in Wisconsin and use my AC for 3 months of the year (max). I would want things to last a little longer than a summer. Hopefully this will be covered by American Honda, but I am very dissatisfied. I wish I could sell my car and get a new one - but that is going to be a 15k investment - I thought this one would last me a good 10 years.

Honda civic 2016 AC problem
Got Honda civic 2016 in September 2016 then March 2019 AC broke AC condenser leak got recall got it fixed. June 2019 same problem got it fixed again no cost. I paid $146.88 for replaced engine air cleaner and air condition micron, dust, and pollen filters. I follow recommendations from services department.March2022 AC blow hot air condenser leak again fixed no cost. I paid $160.00 for replace engine air cleaner, air condition micron dust and pollen filters and $114.95 for AC evaporator cleaning and disinfecting. I maintain my car AC services as recommended from service department. Today my AC evaporator core broke. Car with good maintenance AC evaporator should last 10-15 years. Tomorrow I have to pay $2,500.00 to fix that. Dealership not answer my question why it broken and warranty cover only condenser and compressor shaft seal. I feel that AC problem keep coming and now it’s now warranty not cover evaporator core.My car only almost 7 years old. It is not an old car. My first Honda and the worst. 2017 A/C problems
I own a 2017 Honda Civic. At 21k miles, the A/C stopped working. I took it to a Honda dealership and they said the compressor had failed. They wanted close to 2K fix. I was outraged. I bought my Honda as they are supposed to be so reliable. A/C compressors are supposed to last the lifetime of a car for 10-15 years., not at 21K miles!!! I did some research and discovered that Honda issued a Technical Service Bulletin 19-091 extending the A//C warranty to 10 years, but, only for the condenser!! If the compressor dies, too bad!! The condenser probably caused the compressor to go bad, but, Honda does NOT CARE. Honda does NOT deserve their reputation as being some of the best vehicles made with years of reliable service. I am sure lesser rated car makers, such as Ford and Chevrolet still have their A/C's working at 21k miles. I have a serious medical condition that causes me to have severe heat intolerance. I actually had a heat seizure driving my car. My 2017 Honda Civic with 21k miles is dangerous for my health!!! Honda needs to be sued AGAIN over the A/C issue with 2016-2019 Honda Civics!!!!

The air conditioner went broken at its 5th year. But i really didn't notice the issue since i didn't use air conditioner a lot in northwest coast area. I drove to las vegas and found out the air conditioner not working at all and went to findley honda henderson. They did the diagnosis at first and told me the fee gonna be 169 bucks, then they found out the compressor was broken which gonna cost me 1800 bucks. I didn't want to pay that much and ask the consultant and he told me he will asked his district manager from honda and see whether there is any deal for it. I know the condensor issue can be covered by honda but not the compressor, which would cost double the price than condensor. After a day, the guy told me he can give me 75% off, and at the end it gonna cost me 350bucks. It made me so happy. Nobody wanna pay around 2000bucks to repair the air conditioner. Then i found their diagnosis result, not only the compressor was leaking, the condensor also had issues, and they replaced both the condensor and compressor. The air conditoner works now and ready to hit the road!

Compressor replacement on a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback
So I've been a very loyal Honda customer since 2002. I now own a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback that I purchased brand new in June 2017. During the summer of 2021, I noticed that my AC was not blowing cold air, it was hot, the same as the hot summer air outside. Around this time, Honda did extend their warranty to cover replacement of AV condensers, so I took my car into the dealerships, thinking that I would get it fixed. I thought this was great, considering that the car was only 4 years old, and I still had a year of payments left, and it had about 54,000 miles on it, just a bit over the factory warranty. Well, the dealership said that the compressor would have to be replaced and it will cost $2200. Outrageous! I opted not to get it repaired, at least not until I'm done with my loan payments. However, this year, my niece's 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback started blowing hot air, and guess what? Bad compressor. Honda needs to do the right thing for their loyal customers and fix these compressors. I think this will be my last Honda purchase.

I have a 2017 Honda Civic and at 21k miles the A/C died. I took to the Honda dealership and was advised the compressor was faulty. I was quoted approx 1900 to fix. I refused as it is ridiculous that the A/C did not last to a little over 21k miles. I went online and discovered TSB 19-091. Honda KNOWS the a/c in the years 2017-2019 does NOT work!! Honda REFUSED to fix the car as it was the compressor, not the condenser. Compressors are supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. They wanted close to 2K to fix. The owner of the vehicle has a serious medical condition that causes severe heat intolerance. The faulty A/C is dangerous for the owner to drive!! Honda does NOT care!!! They do NOT CARE about the safety of their vehicles. HONDA'S are NOT reliable!!! They DO NOT deserve that lofty reputation. I will NEVER buy a Honda again. I have owned Hondas for the past fifteen years but NEVER again!! Honda needs to be sued AGAIN over this issue!!! The phone number to Honda corporate is 800-999-1009. This company is outrageous!!

Bought new 4 years ago today. Like everyone else A/C blows hot air on driver's side and cool air on passenger. Took into the dealer and was told it needed a compressor and coil. Was told the repair would be $2700. My service advisor said he would call Honda and see if they would pay for it. The dealership did a great job and said Honda would pay for it all except $225 + tax I would have to pay. Why should I have to pay the $225 when it is a known problem. Going to pick the car up today and I am not happy. This car has been a problem from the start. Quite a few times have gone to start the car and the battery is dead. I make sure that no lights are on when i leave the car. Battery was replaced by the dealer twice and i had a car that would not start last week. Honda is known for its quality. They need to WAKE UP.I will more then likely get rid of this car TODAY and NO I will not get another Honda. I do not like giving out bad reviews but people should know and do research . I was so excited to buy a Honda Civic hatchback and it was the first one I could grab my hands on since it was so in demand. Fast to 2021 and the ac starts blowing cool air in drivers side but significantly colder air in the passenger side. I take it in to the Honda dealership and they tell me it’s the condenser and they repaired it for free. I was happy. They fixed it in April of 2021 now it’s July 2022 and I’m having the same issue but now it’s significantly hotter here in texas and I’m irritable because I’m going through the same issue and it’s barely been over a year. I’m so upset that I have to take it back to the dealership and they’re telling me I’ll have to pay a 350$ diagnostic fee just for them to see what’s wrong. I was on a road trip that was 12 hours and ice chips started hitting me in the face and that was after the ac would not blow air strong enough even at its lowest setting. Any one else having the same trouble after getting it fixed??

Faulty air in 2016 Honda Civic
Air conditioner was blowing hot air. Took to Honda and wasted 2 days lookingvfor a leak. Couldn't find one so I was charges $175 for them looking. They wanted to charged me for freon but I told them no way.I already knew of the faulty air problems. They filled it for free. A few months later I was back again still said they couldn't find the leak and filled it again. Of course it leaked out again. Even though they couldn't find the leak they finally agreed to replace the condenser. Air worked great for a year and 3 months. Then, it went out again. Paid $309 to diagnose and now they arr saying it's the compressor and not covered. They want $2397 to replace it. I currently have a number with corporate Honda. I have wasted so much time on this already. I hope the lawsuit goes well. Honda needs to own up to this problem. I paid almost $27000 for this car new. I should not have this hassle, wasted time and to be charged on top of that.

It worked fine for the next 2 years then last year when my warranty was expired it started doing the same thing. Honda service said I would have to pay fora diagnostic and any repairs. I did some research and found the 10 year warranty on the condenser called them back andthey said oh ok Took it in and they said it was the condenser but the part was on back order. Waited another month but the day they were going to fix it they called and said they had sold the Honda part of their dealership and no longer couldwork on it. So found an out of town honda service that had the part and was able to fix it. That was June 2021. My ac is now again only blowing warm air. And my car only has 5,000 miles on it. My 2018 Civic has been blowing hot air out of my car for a bit now so decided to take it in. Condenser was replaced and covered under warranty but it seems that my compressor is leaking just like most everyone on the reviews. They quoted me$1867.09 before tax which is CRAZY and now looking at all the complaints it seems like Honda messed up big time with these models and won't take responsibility for it. Why extend the warranty on the condenser and not the compressor? Is that where they make the big money? Looking online it says compressors generally need to be replaced every 10-12 years or after 100k miles. I am barely at 50K and have had the car for a little over 5 years. I am looking for quotes online right now and have seen places that can replace it for 900 or under 1k but that is still ridiculous to me and I'm pretty dang upset. It's been my 5th time my a/c stopped working. I already got the compressor replaced under goodwill assistance from Honda(I Paid $625, which got reimbursed back 3 years later 9/1/23). The 2nd time I got my condenser replaced shortly afterwards. Now my evaporator stopped working. I called Honda and they did not want to provide any assistance because my car is at 90,000 miles. I told them that is was a problem since 35,000 miles. They shrugged and told me to go fk myself. I got so pissed. I am taking my car to a local mechanic to replace the evaporator in Los Angeles County on 9/12/23. I will have to pay approximately $1,200 to fix. Some people suggest on changing the refrigerant back to R134a. This was my first Honda purchase and will also be my last. It was the worst experience dealing with the a/c issue since 2019. Same story as everyone else. I purchased the vehicle in 2017. In 2018 it started blowing hot air. I was told it was the o ring and the new vehicles don't blow air as cold as the old (a 1999 Lexus ES300). In 2020 just outside of the warranty, I took it back. They charged for the diagnostic and to recharge the system. They said there weren't any leaks but they put dye in the system. Now on 4/1/2022 at 39,000 miles there is a leak from the compressor that comprised the compressor clutch. They want $2007 to repair it. I am calling tomorrow to tell them no. I am so disappointed in Honda. I have an 18 month old who is suffering. I pray that someone will start a class action lawsuit. Honda should live up to the reputation it once had and recall the air conditioning systems, not just the condenser. Honda corporation should be ashamed of the lies that are being told.

Compressor issues?
Bought a new 2018 Honda Civic 2.0L in October, 2018. Loved it. Last summer (2021), still within warranty, it started blowing hot air out the a/c. Dealership says it will charge it and insert some dye to find leaks. Returned to the dealership later, no leaks found. Great (but where did the refrigerant go?) Now (June, 2022) it is blowing hot again. Dealership now wants $2k+ to replace the compressor (not the warrantied condensor!)...says the condensor is not leaking so no warranty. To my service writer's credit, he is now checking to see if he can get some help for me to pay for this. I love Hondas, they are all I will buy, just to avoid problems like this!! My car just passed 20k miles, is a total cream puff. I am very disappointed and starting to rethink my Honda loyalty. My fingers are crossed...hoping the service writer will text with good news.

AC repair cost US$1500 (2016 Civic Touring, 32000 miles)
AC started blowing hot air since the last service but because of stay-at-home orders and working from home, the car was hardly used so I didn't bother to fix it. Just got it repaired, it cost $1500. The condenser had indeed failed so whatever the condenser repair cost was covered. But the compressor failed as well. I asked if the compressor failure was caused by the condenser failure and was told probably, the service center had seen this twice before, but because the compressor wasn't covered by the Honda acknowledged issue, it cost $1500 to fix. Weather is warming up so I had a choice of driving a car with poor airflow at the best of times (no vents at all for rear seats) or ponying up the money. I don't begrudge the service center workers who need to get paid but this should be coming out of Honda's coffers, not mine.

Overall good car, weak A/C when most needed and unknown service schedule
It took me some time to adjust to the ergonomics of this car, it's been perfect for everything else. Now with 137K miles it's given me no issues overall, the only issue is that AC struggles to cool down the cabin when temperatures near or pass 100°F. One thing I truly dislike about this model is the lack of a maintenance schedule, in the owners manuals or available to customers. Different dealers tell me different maintenance articles all the time: some say to replace spark plugs at 100K, others say at 40K, same for valve inspections and accessory belt. Some say coolant intervals are 60K, others say 30K, some dealer told me about servicing AC system while others never mentioned anything about it.... There's just not a consensus of what maintenance needs at what milage, to me that's concerning and mildly infuriating.

Make sure to have your facts ready!
Read all these reviews and boy I'm glad I did! I had facts ready after reading all these reviews and luckily ended up not paying anything! I called and made an appointment and let them know I was aware of the extended 10 year warranty, when I got there they said it would be a $200 diagnostic fee even if they found it was the condenser. Of course they called and blamed it on a dent in the condenser, and said it wasn't covered. I had already looked at my cars vehicle history (because people said they will find and issue with the condenser and not cover it) and saw there was an animal accident with a previous owner and so I told them that they had sold it to me used that way and to look at the vehicle history. After much battling with them they finally replaced it free of charge, didn't even pay for the diagnostics.

AC not blowing cold air
My wife has a 2016 Civic. I took it to the dealership for AC repairs around May of 2020. After they inspected the vehicles AC, they informed me it was a bad condenser and it needed to be replaced under TSB 19-091. They replaced it for free, which was great. However by the end of summer last year (after about 3 months) it was only blowing cool air. This summer there isn't even cool air. I have an appointment next Wednesday at the dealership. I hope they stand by the AC repairs that they made at the beginning of last summer. I gave a rating of 2 stars instead of only 1 star because they at least acknowledged their defect which at least got my wife through last summer. Sure enough, I turned the AC on and it only blew out warm air. Car only had 8000Kms on it. Brought it in and it was repaired under warranty and everything seem to work fine. Same problem as many others on this thread -- the A/C on my 2018 Civic went out a few months ago; took it into the dealer I bought it from with the intent of using the extended warranty the company extended for the faulty condenser. They called an hour later and told me that the compressor had leaks as well, but that Honda would only cover the condenser. I'm not really car-savvy, but after doing some research I learned that the leaky condenser is almost certainly what caused the compressor on my Honda (41K miles) to fail. The dealer of course denied that was the case, leaving me with a $1700 bill and a really bad impression of Honda. Not sure I would buy another car from them after this.

I paid $200 after waiting four hours for a diagnostic, just to be told it’s going to cost $242 for parts and $2160 for labor since they have to open my whole dash board to get in there. Aside from the condenser leak, there apparently is a evaporator leak and the expansion valve is stuck intermittently. My AC was blowing hot air so I bit the bullet and went to a dealer where a new condenser was installed along with new freon at NO charge! Receipt said "perform recall" but charge said "warranty". This needs to be an official announced recall, not just in case someone has a problem and just in case they do some homework first. I have a 2016 Honda civic coupe brought brand new.. The ac went out (at 36,000 miles) right after the 3 year/ 35,000 mile warranty. I researched and found that this has been on ongoing issue, should be recalled, but Honda doesn’t want to pay out. When the dealership quoted me $1,500 to fix it I said I’d be calling customer service as this is an issue they KNOW about. The dealership contacted them for me and magically it was covered at no cost to me. Fast forward to 2023 and my ac went out again! I’ll be damned if I have to pay because they keep putting faulty equipment in my vehicle, but after all this I will never buy a Honda again.

I own a lemon...I mean a 2018 Honda Civic. I have never had a problem with a Honda until now. Last year, the compressor was replaced in my air conditioner. It was covered by my extra electronic insurance I had purchased. The air worked fine in 2020 but now nothing blows out but hot air. I have 54,000 miles on my Civic and still owe 3 more years of car payments. Now the Honda dealer says that my condenser needs to be replaced and they can fix it for $2,000 dollars. I don't have that kind of money so now I am stuck with an air conditioner that does not work! This was going to be my last vehicle because I retired. I am sick about this!

Honda is not owning defective ac
Honda sucks and dealerships make money when you bring your car in to fix the ac with their dx tests. The compressor and condenser both need to be replaced or the ac will continue to develop holes and pumping out warm air. Honda knows this! Dealership should not charge dx for something they know was never going to work properly because the part they used was faulty. Come on,Honda. Working people were loyal to your brand. They believed in your quality and paid thousands to buy a Honda. Why are you not standing by your brand and owning this? Do the right thing. Hope more class actions get their attention. Do not buy Honda.

Air conditioning failure
AC is definitely a safety issue and not a luxury. In all states, millions of consumers must have air conditioning in their vehicles to combat heat and for general pulmonary disorders. To repeat, AC is not a luxury. It is a necessity, lack of which can lead to sickness and perhaps death. That said, allowing Honda the luxury of an 'extended warranty' whereby Honda is calling the shots is an insult to consumers. A class action needs to move forward immediately against Honda with the attorney generals of this country realizing that millions of Americans suffer a serious health risks owing to defects in Honda AC units.

A/C BAD
My AC stopped blowing cold air so I took it to Honda and they told me it was my Schrader valve that were leaking. So I took my car to another mechanic and they said it was not my Schrader valves. They said it was my condenser that was leaking. So basically what Honda did is lied to me about the diagnosis. After that is when I did my research on these condensers and found out they were being replaced under their so-called extended warranty. I went back to Honda and whenI went back to Honda and when I ask them why they gave me a bogus diagnosis they didn’t have nothing to say.

Condenser then Compressor - not a coincidence
2018 Honda Civic, less than 38 000 km on it. Like others, 2 years ago AC failed, condenser repaired as per extended 10 year warranty. Surprise surprise AC failed again now. But like everyone else, now its the compressor. Cost me $153.00 for this diagnosis. And the cheapest repair is $1700-3400. This cannot be a coincidence. Vehicle barely 5 years old, low mileage. And look how many others have had the same issue just on this page!! Have complained to Honda Canada, but they say too bad. Check back in future to see if they extend the warranty to cover this. DO BETTER HONDA!!

Our 2016 Honda Civic (26k miles) has been a great college car for our daughter. The perfect size, decent gas mileage, very fun to drive, and roomy enough for hauling things out to school and back. The only issue we had was with the air conditioner, it went out during the pandemic and we couldn't get out to have it serviced. Now that we're vaccinated we called Ocean Honda in Santa Cruz and they agreed the AC is under a 10 year extended warranty and we scheduled service, all at no charge of course. Thanks for this article. I'm leaving a review to offer hope to others.

2018 honda civic hatchback air con
My car started blowing hot air, went to the dealership and they changed it for free d/t the recall for the condenser. After couple of months my air con blowing hot air again. I went back to the dealership and I was told that the compressor is damaged and needed to be replace for $1600. If I can give negative 1M stars for this company I would. They should replace my aircon for free. Replacing the compressor cant even guarantee that my aircon will be ok for at least the next 5 yrs. So, we got a 2018 for my daughter after graduating from college. There was a recall for the condenser which it was replace but now the AC went out! We took it to Honda where they telling us now that the compressor and evaporator need to be replace which will cost over $3000.00 this car only have 70,000 miles on it which is hard to believe that already have this kind of issues. This make me believe that there is more to the AC issues that they're not taking responsability to it. I'll do my research and make sure they are not making this up.

NEW WARRANTY EXTENSION: A/C Compressor Shaft Seal leak
I just got a letter in the mail about the 3 year warranty for the A/C Compressor Shaft Seal has been extended from 3 to 7 years. I haven't had an issue with it yet in my 2016 Civic LX but I had to replace the compressor about 3 or 4 years ago back when that failed. Hopefully, if this compressor is gonna fail, it fails in the next 3 years! I don't have much warranty left here. I love this car but d**n, between the parking break not automatically triggering to the multiple A/C problems, it's been more work than Hondas typically are.

Well; just like everyone else here; I got a 2016 Honda Civic, at 27000 miles the AC stopped working; I took it to the dealer to find out they want to replace my entire AC system for $3500; which I found ridiculous. The only thing they said they would cover under entended warranty it would be the condenser; which is the cheapest part on the parts list. I have been driving the car without AC since 2019; I live in California, so, summer is very hot and I need AC. Sadly, I'm still clueless how to get this fixed; any suggestions?

Add my complaint to the pile. 2016 Civic EXT coupe, AC stopped working a month ago. $190 diagnostics, Condenser needs replacing but evap system is also leaking, they will not do the warranty repair without fixing the other leak, to the tune of $2100. I said thanks but no thanks and picked up my car. Like y'all I'm at a loss with what to do here. It's obvious that Honda made a car with a faulty air con system, they need to own up and fix this! We as owners should not be responsible for their faulty manufacturing!

Have owned MANY Honda's. Cars, motorcycles, etc. However, my 2016 Civic had air conditioning issues and I took it to Art Moehn Honda for diagnostics. Said it was the compressor and to fix it would be around $1800 bucks. Service manager said they would most likely go in and replace the entire air unit. So like someone mentioned before, it appears you the customer is paying for the so called extended warranty and the dealer is getting reimbursed by Honda. I've purchased my last Honda.

2016 Honda Civic is garbage
I have driven my Honda Civic for 18,000 miles. It now has its 4th condenser since I purchased it new. When my local dealer discovered I did not buy it from them they said it had a hole & charged me $892.00 for the 3rd replacement. I just had that one replaced with # 4 under the extended warranty from a different dealer. Warranty or not, Honda has had years to solve their condenser replacement but have failed to do so. They just keep churning out the same junk to put in our cars.

Civic 2018 AC issues
I have had the same issue as most people in the comments above. Took my car to the Honda Dealership and told them about the AC blowing hot air. They charged me a $400 diagnostic fee. I was informed that the evaporator was leaking and the issue was not with the condenser (which is the only part of the system that is under the Honda extended warranty). The price that they gave me to fix the evaporator was $2,100 which I am not able to afford. Now I am stuck with a car with no AC!

I have a 2018 Honda Civic with $32k miles. My A/C blows hot air like a heater. Honda Service tells me that I must pay $189 for them to diagnose the issue just to see if it's related to the A/C condenser which has an automatic 10 year extended warranty due to it's faultiness. I'm pissed that I have to pay for a diagnosis. This seems very shady to me. Since Honda knows its a problem, the diagnosis should be free upfront. I don't even trust their diagnosis at this point. I took my 2018 Honda Civic to the dealership in Redding California with the very common problem of the air conditioner not working and two other minor issues.
