Honda CRV Air Conditioner Recalls Worth Knowing About

Carrie H
Jan 21, 2021

When it’s hot, not having working AC can not only be inconvenient, it can be hazardous as well. Honda CR-V air conditioning systems are notorious for failure, but there isn’t an actual AC recall. Honda owners are left with a service bulletin and talk of the “AC black death.”

Honda CR-V air conditioner recall-related issues include:

  • Service bulletin for A/C compressor clutch
  • Numerous complaints about A/C failure
  • Honda Black Death

Black 2020 Honda CR-V In The Snow

Unfortunately, sometimes a total replacement is the only fix for a faulty Honda air conditioning system. We’ll look at the service bulletin for the Honda CR-V, the cause of common problems, and the dreaded Honda black death.

Honda CR-V Service Bulletin

The service bulletin was issued in July 2013. It extends the warranty on the air conditioning system to seven years or 100,000 miles on the 2007-2011 CR-V. Since this period is over, it isn’t helpful to Honda CR-V owners with current A/C issues.

Honda Black Death

Honda CR-Vs are known for their air conditioning systems failing. Honda mentions the compressor clutch wearing out as the most common cause.

Replacing the compressor clutch can be costly, but it’s much less expensive than replacing the entire air conditioning system. The issue is that any failure in the air conditioning system in these vehicles causes debris to be spread throughout the system. This is the beginning of the end.

These pieces of shrapnel and debris are also coated with sludge. This sludge is where the term comes from. It coats the A/C system and will continue to cause the system to fail shortly after repairs.

You can attempt a coolant flush, but this sludge hardens as it cools, which makes it nearly impossible to clean out of the system. The only remedy is to replace the entire air conditioning system.

If you own a Honda CR-V and are experiencing problems with your air conditioning system, you may need to have the entire system rebuilt instead of just replacing the compressor. It’s more expensive, but it can save you the time and expense of having repeated failures.

What to Look for With a CR-V Air Conditioning Malfunction

Car Air Conditioning Button

There are some common causes of an A/C malfunction. Unfortunately, if these problems reach the level of a compressor failure, you will probably need to replace the entire system.

A refrigerant leak can occur in any part of your air conditioning system. If the leak is severe, it can damage the system. Frequently checking your A/C coolant levels can help prevent this problem. Regular maintenance is recommended as well.

If the condenser is dirty or blocked, this will prevent the air conditioning system from functioning properly. You can help prevent this by cleaning your water tank, condenser, and the orifice tube before you turn your A/C on in the spring or summer.

The compressor itself going out is a common occurrence. As discussed above, when this happens black death can occur. The compressor can stop working due to coolant loss or contamination, but it can also occur as a result of normal wear and tear over time.

Problems with the electrical system is another culprit. If there’s a bad fuse, switch, wire, or relay in your system this can cause your air conditioner to stop functioning properly. This is often an easy fix.

What to Do if You are Having Honda CR-V Air Conditioning Malfunction

If you are experiencing a malfunctioning air conditioning system, your options are fairly limited. There aren’t any current Honda CR-V air conditioning recalls, and the service bulletin has expired. You can check for new recalls at the NHTSA website, or you can contact Honda customer service at 800-999-1009.

Hondas ac failure
I bought a new 2004 Honda and still have it. It's always been well maintained even to-date. At 51k the ac went out. It was 102 and I was stuck in Dallas/FT Worth traffic on my way to OK. Cost to repair $2,400. That was to replace compressor and condenser at a certified Heating and Air shop in Montana. I was told at that time by the parts mgr that Honda had been having issues with condenser, but I had it repaired. Eleven months later, at 52.5k it went out again. Parts were guaranteed for 12 months. I drove back to MT for repair and felt really bad that shop owner was out the labor and cost of parts for repair. While waiting to pick up my car, I heard his wife relk him they needed to set things up on a computer in office, that virtually would be so much easier. I attempted to pay him for repairs and he would not accept it, stating he guaranteed his work for 12 months. I git in my car to leave and he went in his office. I was not a wealthy person, that's why I took car to be repaired there again. Butbi felt so bad for him, I got out of my car wrote him a note and said this is fair, it was Hondas part. And left him my laptop computer that I had saved up for, it was 4 months old and cost $1,800. I began writing, going to dealerships and complaining, writing Honda Corp, at their US headquarters complaining, they were rude and insensitive. I continue to complaining. Finally word got around and a class action lawsuit was filed. When all was done, I received $381. I was told this was due to the current age of my car after settlement. I still have the 2004 Honda.its in great condition except no a/c. It has always been well maintained. The only thing I've done besides regular maintenance, is replaced a starter, a sensor and worn serpentine belt. The car has 127k in it. I would love to have ac. I'm 72 and it gets pretty hot in KY in the summer. Traveling two states away to see my daughter and granddaughter is an impossibility for me these days. My daughter had a Honda when I had ac issues, since then she my and granddaughter only buy Toyotas. I had a Toyoto when I decided to buy the Honda, why, because the salesman was really good! I wished I'd gotten that Toyota. And what gets me is this is still going on and Honda buyers only find out about it after they've bought the car. How do they continue to get away with this. I only saw this site because I got so hot in my car today I literally got physically ill. So I went online to see if anyone was talking about it or had gotten better results than me. Guess not. Some one needs to get the word out about this, it even has a name now, BLACK DEAD, why are people still buying their cars??? It won't let me post without a star, so it git one!

It is now three months and I have not heard from Honda. My case number is 12341803. I have been advised on numerous occasions that Walter would get back to me. He has ignored my messages for months now. Great customer service. As stated in my previous poet. I am a longtime Honda owner. Up until now I loved the brand and was very happy with all of my previously owned Hondas. Presently I own a 2017 CRV. The vehicle only has 27,000 miles on it. It has been properly maintained and was in pristine condition when suddenly the air conditioning started blowing hot air. I took the vehicle to the dealer (Rt. 23 Honda in Pompton, NJ) and was advised that the repair cost would be $1896. This is a relatively new vehicle and this type of problem should not be happening. In the past, with previously owned Hondas, if I had a problem after the warranty period and it was something that should not occur in a relatively new vehicle, the dealer would call Honda and deal with the problem and get the problem fixed at no charge to me. Not in this situation, Rt. 23 Honda gave me a number and told me I would have to deal with Honda on my own. I subsequently called Honda and was given a case number and was advised that someone would get back to me in about a week. Well, it’s now August, a month later and I have still not heard back from Honda. I have repeatedly tried contacting them and have left messages. No one from Honda has gotten back to me to date. Going on line I learned that the air conditioning problem is well known to the company and has been going on for years. How sad that company once known for an excellent product and excellent customer service has deteriorated into a company that ignores known defects and ignores their customers who are affected by these defects. In my mind this is fraudulent and unconscionable behavior. Honda’s reputation and goodwill is going down the toilet and Honda should be ashamed.

Honda car year 2017 and after
Honda car ac is really s**k, use cheap quality parts to make bigger profit, CRV usually the high pressure hose from compressor is leak, not the compressor, but dealership alway bullshit saying ac compressor and the hose is leak, resulted by ac dye test,do not trust them, if they use dye test, the owner should drive the car one to two weeks then bring the car back to check the leak, if dealer scan find out the leak with dye check within a day, it is a lie, they knew all the CRV had high pressure hose , but sometime compressor(which is rare), so they do not need dye check, because when the mechanic jack the car up, visually he can see the hose is contaminated with ac oil. But anyway they will charge you the test money anyway. Honda Accord the common leak area is the expansion valve is is less than $100, also Honda Civic the hose to the condenser, I find all model start from 2017 and after have bad ac quality, I am thinks to buy 2022 CRV or RAV 4, CRV interior is attractive, but consider the AC issue , I will go for RAV 4. Honda dealer made big money for the AC failure once the vehicle is past the warranty. Really big money . I own 03 CRV, the ac problems always happen after 160,000 km usually ac compressor. But the newer model become worst, if Honda Canada do not improve this, I think the people will give bad comment to their community and friend. I highly recommend people to find an honest mechanic to pay them fair, rather dump the money to toilet, money use to the service advisor, a comfortable sofa in the dealer, free coffee and million dollars to the mechanic in dealership. Just pay 65% to your honest mechanic then he can fix the car

A/C FAILURE
We have a 2018 Honda CR-V EX with very low mileage. We purchased in April 2018 and in May 2022 with only 17,000 miles the a/c compressor failed. Due to the low mileage I called the Honda Customer Call Center to request a Courtesy Assistance for repairs since out of warranty. Assigned case # and basically that is the only assistance received. Case Manager spoke with me the following day said that even though I had a diagnosis from the dealer he needed additional information from the dealer and would call me within a week. No call back, so I initiated a call and had to leave a message for him. He called the following day. Still needed more info. And this is how it continued for six weeks. During this process the dealer was very proactive on our behalf. This was all to no avail as the final decision was that because it was out of warranty Honda of America would NOT be providing any financial relief. Fortunately we have an outstanding dealership and they stepped up providing a/c compressor at their cost, labor at employees rate and threw in additional monies so that we ended up pay approximately 50% of the original bill. We will NEVER buy another Honda. Corporate doesn't care about their buyers. Our dealer owns several other manufacturer dealerships and we will use one of them when we are in the market for our next new vehicle.

2018 CRV
We bought a new 2018 Honda CRV Touring in Aug of 2018. In June of 2021 while under warranty with only 16,674 miles the AC quit working. We took it to the dealer. They foun couldn't find a leak and charged us $165 for freon. I asked what happens when freon leaks out and they didn't know. I called Honda and told the idiot who answered what had happened.his only answer was freon is not under warranty. I said yes, it, but we obviously have a leak and it has not been fixed. He told me about freon again. In June of 2022 with 21,607 miles again we have no AC and again the dealer says it cannot find a leak and puts more freon in. In Oct of 2022 we again have no AC and took it in. Again no leaks. In May 2023 again we have no AC. They added dye and found leaks in hoses. My husband went round and round that they should pay for repairs. Honda mechanic was very rude. Said we should have asked more questions in the 2 years we have been dealing with this. WHAT! We said we will just pick up the car. He said you will have to pay the diagnostics and he even charged us $20 for the repair order. We bought 2 new Hondas in 2018 because we were told they are great cars and never have problems.we have had problems with both cars and will NEVER buy another HONDA.

I have a 2018 CRV EX bought new in May 2018. 28K miles so far. The AC is not cooling. I tried both the auto mode and manually switching the AC on. But that cool draft of air doesn't come. However everytime I switch on/ off the AC that click sound of the condenser activated comes but the cooling is not there. Also when I switch it on. I can hear a sound something like a liquid gushing through pipes. (you can listen it the video if you watch carefully). I utterly disappointed. The car is not driven enough. If I take.it to honda they ll say it's past warranty (3 years / 36k miles whichever is earlier). It's a shame the AC is not working with just 28k miles on a brand new CRV. The car has been accident free. Can anyone opine what can be the issue. I will take it to honda but want to be careful they don't dig holes to my pockets. Ps: to see if the problem is real. I checked my friends 2017 CRV EX 46K. He set the Ac in auto mode and set the temp to 69.. In less than minute it was blowing cold air and the fan speed started dropping in sometime. It helped me conclude my car AC issue was real and not merely my perception.

2018 CR-V A/C Failed
Just noticed the A/C on our 2018 CR-V EX had failed after turning it on for the first hot day of the year. Found this website and had that sinking feeling in my stomach as I read through everyone's postings. I talked to a friend who repairs all kinds of cars and he explained that he thinks the issue that is causing the compressors to grenade is they use a newer variable displacement pump on these vehicles that obviously was under-designed and certainly under tested for the long term. The car has been a carefree vehicle up till now, only been back to the dealer once I believe for some minor hose or wire recall a few years ago. This is my 6th Honda product going back to 1975 and the first time we've had an Uh-Oh moment. My mechanic friend explained the situation where the failed compressor spits little bits of metal all through the system requiring the major multi-thousand dollar rebuild. I'm going to the dealer this week to get a reading on what comes next but I'm in the class action lawsuit camp at this juncture.

2019 CRV ac
Yep another ac related issue. Lasted 2 years, over the winter Freon leaked out. First cost 440.00 bucks in change. No leak found. One year later same thing, first hot day in the spring blowing warm again. I’ll be dammed if I’ll pay 400 bucks for a second rate mechanic to do the same work with no resultant leak found. When to auto parts store bought 2 cans and a blue tooth gauge set. 70 bucks. One can this year and one for next year. Then I get a notice they have changed the warranty to 10 years on the compressor, well that’s hearting. Made an appointment for this year, but I’m gonna have to blow it off till next spring. I’ve done more than a fair share of refer work in my day. Can’t wait to get an ulcer next year as I will bring it back. Theory is if I have a leak, but lasts all summer, then then nice cold weather shrinks the compressor seals. If was anything else it doesn’t add up. Thanks Honda.

A/C possible fix Honda CRV
I have a 2016 Honda CRV thatbwas blowing warm air. Every time we would take it to the dealer they would say they couldnt find anything wrong and the Freon was full. I then happened across a video on you tube. It explained while your checking the Freon it has you with engine off hook up can of refridgerant to port turn on engine and most times it will be in the green ( full right )? Now have someone rev the engine up to 2000 rpm - 2500 rpm. You will most likely see Freon levels drop to beow the level needed for engine to cool. I then added more Freon until it was in the green and WaLa cold A/C air. I did this a year and a half ago and I live in Phoenix, AZ no problems since. It cost $25 for the Freon Recharge bottle and 5 mibutes of my time. I'm not a mechanic, this is my own experience, im not suggesting you do this, im sharing information, if you perform this you do at your own risk!

2018 CRV EXL A/C problem
I have 27k miles on my CRV and this summer I found that the air conditioner was not working well enough to cool the car appropriately. I did take it to the dealer @ Everett Honda, in WA state, and was told that the compressor was covered under an extended warranty but that wasn't the problem. I needed to replace a leaking "discharge hose" which was going to cost me about 800.00$. What is so worrisome to me is that it seems to be a reoccurring problem, and can lead to a very expensive full air conditioning unit replacement and then it could still happen again! I'm praying there will be a class- action lawsuit, with a payout, not just a fix that could last only a year. I'm on a fixed income, have this car paid off, and thought it would be my last car. I certainly can't afford repeated expensive problems on my fixed income. How can we get a class-action suit started?

2018 Honda CRV
I got the 2018 CRV on lease in 2019 and barely put any miles in it due to the Covid lockdowns. The car's air conditioning started giving me issues around August 2021 as the warranty was on the verge of ending. Every time I turned on the AC, it would hiss and shoot hot air at us. So I took it to the Honda dealership in Montclair, CA and they did was put more coolant and claim that they pressure tested the AC unit. It now the beginning of Summer here in SoCal and we constantly getting temperatures in the high 90's and my CRV's air conditioning is malfunctioning again. So I took it to an independent mechanic and he showed me that the caps for the AC are missing, after doing some research online I found that this model suffers from having faulty AC units and that the mechanics at the dealership did the bare minimum to resolve this issue.

My 2017 Honda CRV A/C has failed 3 times in the last 3 years. 1st problem was when it was in warranty. They misdiagnosed the issue but later fixed it. Then 2nd failure was within 1 year of repair. Then 3rd failure within 1 year of 2nd-time repair. After 1st A/C repair during warranty, the USA Honda said they will take care in case it again fails fairly soon. I have had my pending case under review for 2 months now and they are giving hard time. I know I need to switch my loyalty to Toyota from Honda. It is a shitty unreliable runner-up brand compared to Toyota. Should we all hire an attorney and open a class action lawsuit? I have other issues too with this car, applying the brake on moving interstate or not allowing brake and safety system failures that started just few days after purchase.

2020 CRV - A/C not working
Purchased a 2020 CRV late last year and come to the summer only to realize that our A/C blows only hot air. Less than 8k KMs on it so it’s not a wear and tear issue. Brought it to Queensway Honda who said they fixed the compressor, only to get home and realize that it very much is not fixed, is still blowing hot air and this summer has been HOT. Just brought it back to Queensway Honda and they said that this time, it is a separate issue from the one they fixed(sure…) - the suction hose needs to be replaced and is on back order with no idea when it will be back in stock. As a lifelong Honda customer, I expect more from them. Especially considering the class action lawsuit. Thinking about a trade in now and will definitely not be repurchasing considering the scale of these issues.

Repeat A/C Failure on 2018 Honda CRV
In May of 2021, with only about 10,000 miles in 33 months, our A/C failed. The dealer replaced the clutch, coil and compressor and recharged the unit under the warranty. Now again in May of 2022, with about 13,000 miles in 45 months, the A/C failed again. Car is returning to dealer in two days. Via phone the dealer said that the unit is still under its own 1 year warranty. We will see. Like so many others, I chose the CRV because Honda was one of the most reliable autos == or so I thought. Then last year with the first A/C failure, I read on Consumer Reports that the 2018 model was the worst one in several years. Oh boy!! P.s. My children bought the same model one day later and have NOT had any problems with their auto. To me this sounds like poor quality control.

We were shocked to read online how prevalent the issue is. We also didn't know the car doesn't run if the a/c doesn't work. We read it would cost $2000-$4000 to get it repaired. The price range was all over the place. We went 2 YEARS without a car. We were finally able to get it fixed last summer. Almost immediately, it quit working. The mechanic said the compressor was cracked so it had to be a faulty compressor. They replaced at no charge, which they didn't have to since it was past warranty. Go figure, today it has started making a noise. Will never buy Honda again.

2018 Honda CRV EX-L
At 4 years old and 24000 miles, I turned my A/C on for the first time this season, around June, and it is blowing regular outside temperature air, but no longer cool. A/C was working great at the end of summer last year, so this is not a wear and tear issue. Warranty is expired. I had a local reputable mechanic look at the car, and they found the compressor is leaking, and metal shavings have entered the system. Also, the dryer expansion valve and complete A/C flush is needed. Repairs will be around $2200. I contacted the Honda dealership, and they want their own technician to look at the car before inquiring through Honda, if any compensation will be offered. This is unacceptable for a car that is almost new. Everything else about the car is great.

The A/C compressor just failed on our 2018 CR-V with just 44k miles on it. The 36 mo. Warranty expired just 7 months ago. The dealer now tells me the total cost of compressor replacement is $2240 ....neither they nor Honda can (or will) do anything to soften that cost. As others here have said, this is fully outrageous. This is my 4th Honda/Acura which I bought because of the dependability and low repair costs on the previous Honda vehicles. Clearly Honda has gone the way of SO many formerly-great manufacturers. We also had AC problems, mostly unreliable and intermittent cooling, with our 2018 CRV shortly after the warranty expired. The dealer ended up basically replacing the whole system since they said the compressor had a leaking seal at our cost of over $2500. As we were on the last leg of our driving vacation, about 2,000 miles later, we started having the same problem. We’ll have to see what the dealer does now. I have tried to contact Honda Customer Service and managed to get a case number last month when we first had this problem, but haven’t heard back and can’t get through to anyone now. Last June, my Honda started blowing hot air. Took it to dealer and they found a faulty a/c sub harness - charged me $686.99 to fix. Said that these things happen... It is working now; but, I'm pretty skeptical after reading the issues here. They just sent me a Warranty Extension in the mail for 10 years with no mileage limitation.. Hope this helps some of the folks here with past repairs? In any case, I'm bracing for the inevitable a/c compressor leak. 2018 CRV air conditioner going out.
Purchased a 2018 Honda CRV EXLon December 31, 2018. Have just over 26,000 miles and the air conditioner is blowing only warm air. Took it to a local mechanic who said he couldn’t work on the air conditioning problem because of the type of Freon the CRV used. Asked what he thought it might cost at the dealer. He told me anywhere between $700-$2,000. Took CRV to dealership this morning. I was quoted $3,400 plus tax. After reading all the complaints here, I now have a case # and will voice my concerns when I pick it up later today. People have every right to complain if their cars are malfunctioning!! After looking through endless websites it appears that the A/C has been a terrible problem in CRV's since they came out. There was a class action suit, but that expired in 2008. They're still pumping them out and the failures continue. My 2017 just had an A/C failure, with less than 15,000 miles. Just to fill it up with freon costs $500 because it uses 1234yf, which costs 10 times more than R-134a. Honda has a serious problem and they need to own up to it and take responsibility for it. I LOVE my CRV, but I will never buy one again if this repair fails.

2018 Honda CRV Air-conditioning NOT WORKING

I Thought it was fixed. In 2021 on extended warranty charged over $1,000, dealership replaced a couple of hoses added coolant. I thought it was fixed in 2022 recharged the coolant. Again the dealership assured me it was fixed. Now this week March 2023 it is blowing warm air AGAIN!!! It is at the dealership again being repaired! I want to know WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS VEHICLE! We have. 2018 CRV EX with 28000 miles. Went on a trip recently and turned on A/C but no cold air. Took to dealership, and like others, we’re just out of warranty period so the expense is our problem. They said it’s a leak in compressor so they’re replacing compressor at a cost of around $1600! This is a common problem but Honda is not stepping up here. Just afraid it’s going to happen again in another few miles. Bad parts replaced with same bad parts doesn’t give me a lot of confidence. Probably won’t buy a Honda again. Practically new car should not have this happen.

Recurring AC Failure 2018 CRV
AC is 2018 CRV has failed 3 out of 4 years I have owned the vehicle. In 2019 and 2020 replaced leaking lines. 2021 system worked without any issues. 2021system failed again and compressor was replaced. Honda serve techs said they have never seen this number of issues before but based on the number of complaints I have seen on line are just lying to cover up the problem since there is a technical bulletin concerning AC failures. Vehicle is still under warranty so this has not cost me anything but time but will get rid of the CRV before the warranty expires and go back to Toyota.

CRV ac compressor failure
Warranty on our 2018 Honda CRV EX expired the first of March this year. We went to use the ac and it blew hot air. Dealer charged $140.00 for dye test which showed the compressor leaking. Pretty much a new Honda with under 40 k miles. Honda should for the $1,400 bill and put out a recall! This seems to be a known problem with Honda! Seems most of the failures are right after warranties expire. Is this something the cars are programmed to do? We have owned 7 Hondas and having the compressor go bad in this new of a vehicle is NOT acceptable!! Not a happy camper.

My 2018 Honda CRV EX air conditioning stopped blowing cool air. I was told that the compressor broke and metal shavings were scattered through the system. I was quoted a price of over $3,000 to fix the unit. Since I only have 22,000 miles, and just passed the 3 year warranty. Fortunately, Honda of Fort Myers FL covered all but $411 to fixthe air conditioning unit. I’m very disappointed with the air conditioning flaw and feel that I shouldn’t have to pay anything. I’m also disappointed with Honda and the quality of their vehicles.

CRV Air Conditioner
We have a 2018 CRV purchased 3 1/2 years ago, with 34,000 miles. We were (up to this point) long time Honda owners. A/C stopped blowing cold air last week. Paid the dealership $149 to look at it. Dealer said it needs a new compressor for $1,950. After reading the service bulletins and comments in this tread, it appears that will not be the end fix. I think we might try to trade it in on a Subaru or Toyota. Thank you everyone for your comments about this issue. It is nice to have more info than the dealer provided before dropping $2k.

AC issues on Honda CRV 2017
The car has only 34,000 miles but is more than 3 years old, so guess I am out of luck. Reading all the reviews here is reiterating my believe that Honda quality has really taken a hit, and they do not stand behind their product. The dealers are not helpful at all- contacted 2 dealers, and they both said the same thing. They will charge a diagnostic fee to figure out the problem, and that the vehicle has no warranty past 3 years. What a shame... I will be switching back to Toyota, as Honda is just not what I had hoped for.

Still a new car for me - Last week got the cabin and air filters replaced with my 45K service as I thought the problem would go away. Even 10 mins later with "lo" on passenger and driver side, still hot air. After reading about this issue online, looks like this is common with Honda's. No more warranty - and now what? Bad AC on a 2022 Honda CRV
I purchased a brand new 2022 Honda CRV late October 2021. I drove it for about 300 miles and then parked it in the garage for about a month and a half. After that I found there was kind like hissing of light rattling noise from AC or its fan. The air blown out was only cool but no way near to cold. Took it to the dealer, they "guessed" it was an AC system leak and injected dye and refrigerant, asked my to bring it back in 6 months to see if there is leak and where. They recharged the refrigerant
