The IIHS gave the 2020 Jeep Wrangler an overall “Marginal” score. This rating is likely due to its subpar performance on the driver-side small overlap front crash tests and inadequate LED headlights. It performed well enough on the rest of the tests, but that was enough to drop its overall score.
On the other side of the coin is the 2020 Jeep Cherokee. This mid-size SUV not only got an overall “Good” rating but earned the Top Safety Pick award in 2019. Like that model, the 2020 version aced all its crashworthiness scores, plus got a “Superior” rating on its vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
When put through NHTSA testing, the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee received a 5-star rating. The front crash tests yielded four stars on the driver side and five stars for the passenger side.
It also earned four stars on the rollover tests, which showed it only had a 16.9% risk of rolling in a crash. It was also deemed a “No Tip” risk during the dynamic tip tests. The side barrier and pole rating crash test results were the most impressive. On all those tests, this SUV earned five stars across the board.
Although the 2020 Renegade did not perform quite as well as the Grand Cherokee, the NHTSA still gave it a 4-star rating. On its front crash and side tests, it got four stars overall. At three stars, the rollover test results likely tanked its score, especially since it has a 22.8% risk of rolling over.
