A car’s nameplate can mean different things from generation to generation. The Mazda 3 has gone through a number of redesigns affecting both the visual presentation and totally replacing the engine. Newer Mazda 3s carry a SkyActiv-X.

What are the specs of a Mazda 3 engine?

The Mazda 3 engine is a 2L (121.9 ci) SkyActiv-X aluminum-block with a 3.29 x 3.59 bore and stroke. The standard output is 177 horsepower and 156 lb-ft.

If you’re shopping for a Mazda or if you’re just curious, we’ll get into the history of the SkyActiv lineup below, and we’ll cover some of the common questions relating to the engine and the car. Read on and find out everything you want to know.

History of the Mazda 3 Engine

The SkyActiv engine family debuted back in 2011, starting with the SkyActiv-G. This engine was based on the Sky-G 2.3L (137 ci) direct-injection concept engine. The Sky-G had first been showcased in the Mazda Kiyora at 2008’s 40th Tokyo Motor Show.

The SkyActiv-G was the world’s first commercially available gas-powered 13.0:1 compression ratio engine, achieving a remarkably clean burn and great thermal efficiency. It debuted in the Mazda 2 13-SkyActiv.

Further SkyActivs would follow including the SkyActiv-Hybrid, the SkyActiv-R rotary engine, and finally the SkyActiv-X.

The SkyActiv-X, debuting in 2019 with the Mazda 3, is the first commercial petrol engine using compression ignition. This approach ignites the fuel-air mixture spontaneously when the piston is compressed, resulting in a better fuel efficiency than a conventional spark-ignition engine.

What Models Have the Mazda 3 Engine?

At first, the Mazda 3 was the only car being offered with a SkyActiv-X engine. However, Mazda has been equipping other models with the engine for the 2020 and 2021 model years.

The CX-30 in particular, Mazda’s compact crossover SUV, is currently available with a SkyActiv-X. While taking pre-orders for the SUV, Mazda reported that around 45 of all customers bought their CX-30s with a SkyActiv-X engine.

Mazda is currently in a transitional phase as they migrate other nameplates over the SkyActiv-X. Right now you won’t see many Mazdas on the road with a SkyActiv-X, but don’t be surprised if this engine becomes standard for the brand in the near future.

Common Questions on the Mazda 3 Engine

Does Mazda Still Use Rotary Engines?

Sort of. Mazda has not abandoned the idea of the rotary engine, but their most famous failed experiment, the RX-8, was discontinued over poor fuel efficiency and emissions that didn’t meet regulations. The SkyActiv-R is their current rotary engine project as of 2020.

Who Makes Mazda Engines?

Mazda! There is some confusion around this because Ford used to be a one-third owner of Mazda, so some of their engines would be from Ford. But today Mazda is 100% made-in-Japan from the fender to the engine.

Is Mazda 3 a Good Used Car?

Yes. A Mazda 3 is cheap and easy to maintain. Every used car will have you doing a few more repairs than you might like, so the great thing about a Mazda 3 is that these repairs are not going to break the bank.

Are Mazda SkyActiv Engines Reliable?

Yes, but… The SkyActiv engines have their issues, but they’re very cheap to fix. Mazda engines use standard components that can be serviced at most auto shops, meaning you won’t have to wait weeks for parts to ship.

Are Mazdas Fun Driving?

Yes. Consumer Reports named Mazda a top brand in 2020, noting their high ratings for owner satisfaction. This comes down to your opinion, of course. Maybe you prefer off-roading or drag strip racing, but if you like compacts, the Mazda 3 is a lot of fun.
