Blue 2021 Mazda 6 From Front-Driver Side

The Mazda 6 is a four-door sedan. It has a better-than-average reliability rating, making it an appealing choice. However, there are some problems that appear frequently with this vehicle. It’s important to know the common issues before you buy.

What are the most common Mazda 6 problems?

Common problems include:

  • Total engine failure at under 100,000 miles, common with 2009
  • Transmission failure with some occurring under 100,000 miles, common with 2008 and 2014
  • 2009-2013 models melting dashboard causes stickiness and shininess occurring with 2009-2013

We’ll take a closer look at these problems, and the vehicle itself. You’ll learn which models are most likely to have these problems, and what to expect if you encounter them. This awareness can help you avoid these issues.

Mazda 6 Overview

The first generation Mazda 6 was produced from 2003 to 2008. It was offered as a four-door sedan or a five-door. Base models offered keyless entry and cloth seats, while higher trims provided leather seats and a premium sound system.

The second generation covers models from 2009 to 2013. Mazda dropped the five-door option. The vehicle had two engine choices. A 2.5 liter 4-cylinder or a 3.7 liter V-6. The V-6 has 272 horsepower, which makes it fun to drive.

The third generation began in 2014, and will continue with the 2021 model. The standard engine is a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder that provides 187 horsepower. Those who want a sportier ride can opt for a higher trim package that includes the turbocharged 2.5, with 250 horsepower.

The Mazda 6 has won many awards over the years. The 2003 model was named one of Car and Driver’s 10 Best. In 2009, Motortrend named it the Best Family Sedan.

The 2020 model made J.D. Power’s list for the Best Consumer Rated Sedan. It’s also rated a Top Safety Pick + by IHS.

Mazda 6 Problems

Engine Failure

According to Car Complaints, the worst problem with the Mazda 6 is engine failure with the 2004 model having the highest instance of engine failure. The average mileage for engine failure occurring is 98,000 miles.

Some owners believe that the exhaust system is poorly designed or too restrictive. However, mechanics aren’t able to identify a specific cause of engine failure. Some owners report a knocking before the failure, while others say it failed with no warning.

Transmission Failure

Transmission failure was a common problem for the 2014 model. In fact, it was the most reported problem for the 2014 Mazda 6. It also occurred at relatively low mileage. The average mileage for transmission failure in the 2014 is 55,000 miles.

Most owners had to replace the transmission. Owners reported the transmission slipping, delayed shifting, and rough shifting. It can also cause vibration or jolting when shifting gears.

The 2008 is also infamous for transmission problems. These occur at a higher mileage, with an average of 130,000 miles. Owners state that the transmission would fail with little warning. Some owners noted slipping or rough shifting, but others say it was working fine and then failed completely.

Melting Dash

A melting dash is not a problem any vehicle owner expects to have. In the 2009-2013 models, the dash is unable to withstand the heat from sunlight. The dash begins to melt along with the glue that is used to cover the dash. This creates a sticky film.

A sticky dash can be a nuisance, but the bigger concern is that the process causes the dash to shine. When the light strikes it, it reflects on the windshield. This can make the windshield impossible to see through, which can easily lead to an accident.

Mazda issued an extended warranty for the problem. The dash is covered for 10 years. However, many Mazda owners say that they were never notified and found out only after the warranty had expired.

Considering a Mazda 6

If you are considering purchasing a Mazda 6, you can do research at Vehicle History. You’ll find expert reviews and a full list of specs. You can also check out reviews from Mazda 6 owners.

A VIN search will provide you with a history of the vehicle which can help you avoid problem cars.

2017 Engine Failure @ 100,000 miles exactly
I LOVED my car… for five years, before it broke down on my way to work. Turned out it was complete engine failure. One thing I noticed was that my oil burned away very quickly with no sign of leaking or smoking. Electrical issues for the radio dashboard screen caused it to seem possessed but it turns out it was a short expanding and contracted from heat. Behind the screen the film melted off. This happened right when the warranty expired. All of this makes me wonder if it was just a scam to sell these cars to owners because they are lemons and should be sold as-is. $52,000 down the drain. I could have bought a house, but now I’m just renting without a car. Thanks Mazda. Wish I saw these reviews -never again.

Mr.
I have owned a 2006 Mazda 6 touring (estate) and it has been a reliable car mechanically. I ensure the service schedules are followed and over the year, the only problem recurring is the air-conditioning. Maybe due to live in an hot and humid climate which is more taxing for the system. I recently bought a 2018 version and it is a big improvement. Smooth, quiet and economical fuel-wise. Bought 2nd hand so still time to test out the reliability but looks like a good car to have. Big on the outside but not really spacious inside. Rear seats are not built for the tall person. Overall, rather happy with the two generations of Mazda 6

Reliable, front wheel drive, with style inside and out and great stereo quality.
Silver 2008 Mazda6, decent mileage for it is age being at around 80k miles. The only problem that happens often is when it gets cold, the front passenger headlight stops working, but will come back on when it warms up again. Performance is at good quality for it being almost 11 years old. Updated stereo face that has CD player, USB port, and auxiliary plug in. Dash lights are red in color and can be dimmed if needed. Along with those features, the place where the tint and temperature is displayed can be changed and you can with letters and symbols. Reliable car.

I've loved my 2011 Mazda 6
Starting from when I got it at 32,000 miles, it has so far lasted up to 242,000 miles it is currently in the shop for what I believe is the transmission severe slippage. The only true complaint I have about my car is the battery in the winter up in Chicago lasts only a year or a year and a half because it does not want to start in 10°F or below unless the battery is at most a couple months old. I can confirm that part of my dash did melt, I got that replaced with no issue.

Had this car for long time and never had engine problems
This car has fallen apart over the years--the suspension creaks, none of the power windows work, one of the doors sporadically refuses to open. However, it runs incredibly well for how old it is. She's old reliable. The seats are comfortable and the car itself is spacious, but I still think that for a 10-year-old car the features and body have held up surprisingly poorly. I don't think anything could kill this engine, though.

Why they can't make stainless thresholds?
I have 2005.11 Mazda 6, 2l petrol manual, now it has gone nearly 300k km and I would pass another technical inspection if the thresholds wouldn't be rusted through. Also the engine is consuming the engine oil (like a lot 1k km/1l oil), but all the rest with the car is very well, still goes like as it should, everything works nice and fun to drive :)

Turbo
Had the mazda 6 2014 sports, no issues up to December 2022 . Serviced every year then out of the blue the turbo went. February, battery management light comes on with the stop start light changing colour. It's intermittent so garage cant find the fault . It will be with great reluctance that i will have to get rid ,loved my Mazda

The 2008 Mazda6 handles well.
I love my Mazda but it does have little problems here and there. The main issue has been with my air and heat. My air regulator went out twice. I have either cold or hot air. However, the car handles great with good performance. I would recommend this car for sure. It has many positive characteristics.

2008 Mazda6 is very comfortable and spacious for its size
It has been very reliable, I've had issues with my tires and tire pressure light a lot and that would be my only complaint. The Vehicle was very affordable and runs really well even with it over 200,000 miles. I think Mazda is definitely an affordable and trustworthy vehicle manufacturer.

Reliability at its best
I really cannot fault this car after 4 years of ownership, never let me down and been a pleasure to drive......and I always look back at it when walking away, that's a sign of affection in my opinion. 2015 Mazda 6 Sport Nav 2.0 Petrol, 6 Speed Manual

I love my 2008 Mazda 6.
My only issues with it so far are the front bumper ripping off due to snow and then the fender liner coming off with it, as well as the wheel bushings becoming old and squeaky, however I believe those could be easily changed out.

A sporty 4 door 2009 Mazda6 sedan that is perfect for a family of 4.
I love the fact that even though my Mazda 6 is a sedan, it still has a sporty look and enough pep to get up and go. The only problem I have had with it recently is the smart key does not always function correctly.

Reliable car. Prefer it smaller and sportier as it has been in the past.
Have had problems with fuel injection system, mostly a great car, had a 2007 Mazda 6 before and prefer the body style and sportiness much more than the very sedan larger body type of the 2009.

Wont go
Got a 2004 mazda 6 with 195000kms on the clock and it seems to have no compression, and took the rocker cover off and it seems all 4 inlet valves are stuck open, its got me beat

2015 Mazda 6 G145 manual transmission
I love mazda 6, I have the second one. Unfortunately the transmission failure appeared at 63,000 miles for me as well. It needs to be repaired for huge amount of money. :(

2008 Mazda6 runs very well. I have had it for 3 years and have had no serious issues.
My car has a transmission issue which makes it hard to accelerate sometimes. The turn radius is awful but for the most part it is an okay car with minimal serious issues.

I like how long my 2008 Mazda 6 has lasted.
The ac works when it wants to and the headlights short a lot. I dislike the amount of room in it and all the little things that go wrong constantly.

Mazda 6 touring 2012
I love my car. I've had it for 3 years. It's making a weird grinding noise when driving. I've taken it to the mechanics but they can't work it out.

2008 Mazda6 is old but works nice and takes me places that I need to go.
Love it. Just have problems with a few things. This week replace the brakes and rotors. Now the lights from the driver side are not working.

After 10 years the 2008 Mazda 6 can still get up and go when needed.
Love that after ten years it still has a lot of pep when needed. Problem with one tire pressure sensor.
