2016 Lexus RX 350 Overview

Data provided by Edmunds

The 2016 Lexus RX 350 represents a complete redesign, with radical new styling inside and out, a generally more carlike driving experience and an impeccably crafted cabin. This review includes information about its performance, fuel economy, available features, safety and what it's like to drive.

Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: The 2016 Lexus RX 350 has an extremely large grille. If that black expanse were any bigger, Stephen Hawking would probably have to be called in to investigate for the presence of a black hole. At the same time, the all-new RX also has enough creases and sharp edges to make one think that Lexus delegated the design phase to a sword-slashing samurai. For a midsize crossover that has been quite anodyne until now, this makeover is bound to be a bit shocking. An expansive new grille is one of the many changes Lexus made to the 2016 RX 350. More importantly, however, there are plenty of substantive changes that make this luxury crossover SUV more carlike and indeed better than ever before. For one thing, Lexus increased the 2016 RX 350's wheelbase and overall length to improve interior space for passengers, while simultaneously raising the ride height and slimming out the roof line. The result is a much sleeker and less SUV-like profile, yet there's still abundant head- and legroom in both seating rows. Up front, the dashboard is lower and the center control stack is more angled toward the driver (who also sits a bit lower), while the improved materials and construction are absolutely first-rate. Most RX models you'll find on a dealer lot will include the Navigation package with its colossal new 12.3-inch display, one of the largest you'll find this side of a Tesla. This display comes equipped with a revised, but still distracting-to-use Remote Touch controller that we think requires more driver attention than it should. In general, though, the new RX's infotainment features have been significantly updated to meet the expectations of tech-savvy shoppers. For power, the RX 350 stays the course with its 3.5-liter V6, but now it makes 25 more horsepower (for a total of 295) and comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission that helps boost fuel economy slightly. Lexus has also retuned the suspension to provide better handling than prior RX models. The RX 350 F Sport, in particular, finally delivers the goods, boasting sharper steering than the standard version, plus an adaptive suspension that yields an impressively controlled, yet still comfortable ride. Ultimately, the F Sport is aimed more at mildly sporty competitors like the Acura MDX than at dedicated performance models, but it's a gratifying drive nonetheless. There are a few reasons to think twice about this new RX. The aforementioned Remote Touch controller is one, along with modest acceleration and limited cargo capacity compared to segment norms. Other choices like the BMW X5, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Volkswagen Touareg and Volvo XC90 are all worthy of a long look, and a few (including the MDX) offer optional third-row seating as well. But with its long list of improvements, the 2016 RX 350 brings a welcome dose of excitement and modernity while still maintaining the comfort and quality for which it's renowned.

Comfort and interior quality are still key strengths for the redesigned 2016 Lexus RX 350, but a more carlike driving experience helps broaden its appeal. We think the latest RX is a smart pick for a luxury crossover SUV.

The Lexus RX has been completely redesigned for 2016.

In it's own class

We previously owned a 2009 RX350 and loved it. This new 2016 Lexus RX350 F SPORT exceeds all of what we enjoyed from the old one to the 10th degree!

F Sport - better than anticipated

This is our third Lexus. I previously switched to BMW and after I was on a first name basis with the service manager at my local BMW dealer, I switched back to Lexus before my BMW warranty ended - the repair bills were terrifying. I generally prefer to buy one year old cars because of the significant depreciation. However, in this case, the performance and looks of the newly designed RX F-Sport were dramatically improved, and I couldn't bring myself to go with the old egg shape RX. The F-sport design of the 2016 and newer models is much more aggressive. I laugh, because when my friends saw it, they commented how aggressive it looked. It is not as fast as it looks, but when in the S+ mode, you get plenty of oomph from a car that carries it's passengers in total luxury, near silence, safety, and reliability. The interior of the F-Sport is extremely attractive and looks as though they were seeking to grab guys attention, with the hand stitched leather, carbon dash trim, etc. I bought a black model with black interior and every option available. I don't have any regrets as I love the safety and technology. The only part that strikes me as goofy is the panoramic sunroof. It looks great and everyone loves it when they ride in my car. Unfortunately, only a tiny opening slides open, which is really strange considering the size of the giant panoramic roof. Interestingly, I have ridden in convertibles with less wind buffeting (when the roof is open at around 25 mph). I have 16,000 miles on my car and bought it 7 months ago. While the sunroof (when open) is a bit of a design flaw, the rest of the car is 100% awesome. I would buy this car again and have no regrets. Some people aren't a fan of the more aggressive and sportier design. While I love the new style, I found the old egg RX shape a bit of a snooze fest. It has acceptable storage, but we quickly learned my wife's GX holds MUCH more in the trunk than my little RX commuter vehicle. This is a great vehicle and 100% worthy of consideration. If you just lease your cars and don't worry about what it's like to own them 3+ years out, I would also check out the Audi's. But if you want a car that will never leave you stranded with tons of technology, check out the 2016 RX F-Sport. There is a reason Lexus has had the best selling mid-size luxury SUV for years.

Noise and vibration

I bought an RX 350 and it is almost 3k miles. There is a noise/vibration from the floor that drives me nut. The noise and vibration starts at any speed; from start driving to accelerate from any speed. I have not taken my 2016 RX 350 into service yet, but from other reviewers who have already been in service and got nothing done so I decided not to waste my time and anguish to argue with these repair tech. it is definitely a flaw in this new 2016 design. I also have an ES350 so this is not my first Lexus, and I know for the fact that this is not Lexus quality. Fix it for us Lexus.

Flying ole lady

Like the RX but the transmission is so rough, I can't believe it is a Lexus. Like regular gas instead of high-test.comfortable in both front and back seats. Disappointed in low gas mileage. Had by 2011 RX hybrid and I liked it better.
Have since started using high octane gas ans shifts better but still not smooth like a Lexus should be! Still disappointed. Had a recall on hatchback door opener.

DO NOT LEASE OR BUY

I was very upset to say that car does not offer the technology as customers like to have in year 2016, the options to customize your options is horrible. I had a Ford Limited Explorer simple things like locking the car doors by its self automatically is awesome to have to save your belongs from getting stolen from your vehicle. The ac options and to many things to learning curved is hard take a few days and I am a young tech guy. I feel they can do better not happy my first Lexus not very happy.

DRONING NOISE AND POOR RESPONSE OF ACCELERATOR

Test drive for a droning, humming noise around 1500 rpm, dealer does not want to say there is a problem but I test drove with the tech and shop foreman they eluded to the noise is from a possible redesign of exhaust system. There may not be a safety issue but it is sure a let down for being a Lexus. We test drove one on the lot and did not notice the noise we then went into the showroom to make the deal and my wife saw this one on the show room floor. It was late at night and we did not drive it until we headed home if we had driven it we would have not purchased it.The accelerator is not responsive. If you coast and then press on accelerator you have to keep pushing then it kicks down in a lower gear. This car had a 50k sticker price.Cant believe it is a Lexus.Give me back my sedan.

Disapointed

This car is not as Refined as the past RX SUV. The Shifting is rough and the 8 speed Tranny is very Rough ,it seems like it is not sure sometime between 7 and 8. I think they should remap the Trans. I finally just use manual and use #7 and that stops all the up and back shifting for now. The engine is Very Loud and I hate that.I I really think Lexus should give is some help with these things. My Truck rides 100% better and quit too.

Windshield Problem! Don't buy the heads up display

If you want to buy the RX 350 with heads up display, I suggest you wait. I bought this car in March of 2016 and the windshield has a problem. there is a double vision where the all the lights (cars, traffic lights, street lights) are doubled. The dealer changed it once and the problem is still there. The deal says this is the was Lexus designed the windshield, which is a lie!! I contacted Lexus customer satisfaction team and they believed the dealer without even inspecting the car. I warn you from buying these cars. It has other minor problems too. Such a waist of money. Paid $61,000 thinking that its a luxury car. I think I will go back to BMW and Audi

Lexus losing its status

4th Lexus owned and by far the worse. Our 2007 RX 350 was and is amazing. 175k miles and still running strong. After only 4 months and approximately 6k miles we want to trade this end for something that works like the Lexus cars we are accostumed to. Navigation with voice recognition is absolutely a waste of money. Doesn't recognize common language words and is super frustrating. Rides like a truck. One reason we selected RX 350 over the 4Runner was for a car like ride. Last comment is in regards to Entune. Toyota needs to let technology companies do what they do better. Adopt Apple Car play!

Poor infotainment system, poor acceleration, very poor steering and you cannot lock the doors and disable the alarm together, thereby making it impossible to leave my dog in the car without fear of theft. Nice luxury , though the seats are a little hard.

Finally Lexus has made a SUV that a man can glady say is his. It's an attention grabber with the new redesign and the interior is top of the line. The ride is unbelievable and surprisingly quiet. I would NOT buy another luxury SUV.

What a difference

The improvements made from my previous RX is extraordinary. The new 2016 styling is sporty and aggressive. The ride and sound proofing is excellent. The headlights truly give almost daylight clarity. I also love the sound system on the radio where classical music sounds magnificent. The handling and acceleration is also greatly improved. I had no idea that my purchase would have been this worthwhile.

Buyer's Remorse

Numerous idiotic design "features" that give you a pain in the butt. Too many to list, so here are some highlights: Why does it only unlock the driver's door? Once inside, my friends have to wait while I fumble for the unlock button. The one-touch rear hatch opener almost never works. You can't listen to the radio and have your phone navigate, like you could with a normal car. AC compressor defaults to on, even when it's freezing outside. Complicated menu sequence required to turn it off - distracted driving at it's finest. Terrible throttle response, you could get killed waiting for it to rev up and downshift through about 6 gears. You have to accelerate with a lead foot or else it upshifts too far, and then has to downshift again. It buzzes on a rough road - coming from the headliner area, right side. Heater has numerous cold spots, with cold air blowing on my left ear and foot, unless you crank it up to about 80 degrees. Auto-dimming mirror doesn't work. You can't just flip it up, can't even raise it high enough manually, due to lack of travel. Why does the radio stop just because you start the engine? AM is totally muffled, even with the treble and midrange cranked. Why won't the windows roll down unless the engine is running? A manual crank would work better. WTF is with the door locks? I left the engine idling, went around to the passenger side to get something and it refused to unlock, so had to go back to the driver's side, open the door, and hit the unlock button, and then walk around to the passenger side again. The steering is way too stiff! It's worse on on the freeway than in a parking lot. My old arthritic hands can't handle it. I guess they think that's "sporty". The steering wheel heater is near-useless, since it only heats small leather strips at 9 and 3 o'clock - also it won't turn on automatically, even though the seat heaters do. You can't put your hands on the bottom of the wheel, since there's a giant "spoke" blocking it. Do not buy this car, unless you like to be frustrated.

Problems along the way after owning for 2+ years

The car has been reliable, and never stranded us on the road. But among all the issues here are some major ones: 1) In quite a few occasions, all windows and moon roof would be found open by themselves while parked in front of the house. The fob's were inside the house on the kitchen counter; Googling "Lexus all windows and moon roof open by themselves" finds discussions of some mentioning being a Lexus software feature, while others think it is a software defect, over 8-9 years; 2) Each time the car is started, and you try to back out of a parking spot, if you have a phone programmed to connect via bluetooth, it generates a connection message on top of the LCD screen, blocking off the top which is the most important part of the rear view camera display. However, turning your head to see the rear would find the view was blocked by the hatch back cover. Guess the designers thought with the rear view camera, you wouldn't need to turn your head to see the rear; 3) The software menu is horrendously organized, and difficult to use; 4) It is not easy to know if the AC is on, and it is not easy to turn it off via the menu on the LCD screen. Go try to turn off AC next time you sit in a Lexus RX350 -- mind you that the AC could be still on even if the "Auto" AC led on the button is off. And many more smaller nits, such as the steering wheel making scratching sound when turning, etc. The Lexus RX350 quality and design are not what I expected it to be before I purchased it.

Smart balance between comfort and performance

Coming from 2007 RX that we had for a while to 2015 RX that lasted 8 months to 2016 RX.

2016 is a huge step forward, regaining light feel of the 2nd gen, bringing back lovely engine sound and finally having great, deep and comfortable seats.

It's not the car that wants to hurry up but it will hassle when pushed with crisp steering feel and much less leaning compared to both models before it.

Not sure about all the negative reviews on the net, got to be the grill influence. Get beyond it and it grows on you quickly with smart balance between comfort and performance.

Lexus Makes the Best SUVs. Period.

If you want the best SUV, then you want to buy a Lexus. This is my third Lexus SUV. I opted for the 450H F Sport model and could not be happier. Pros: ample power, yet great MPG. Gorgeous styling. Very comfortable interior. Unmatched reliability. Cons: nav system so-so; not cheap. It is funny to read those negative reviews about the Lexus RX. My guess is some of them are written by BMW/MB/Audi dealers. Lexus pioneered the luxury SUV and has been the sales leader in luxury SUVs from the beginning. It is obvious their European competitors are doing everything they can to knock down Lexus. The styling of the new Lexus RX is amazing. If you take the BMW/MB/Audi SUVs, remove their nameplates and their styling for many models are exactly the same. No originality! None! If you live in any metro area, 300HP is ample power. You do not need 500HP to drive around town! Bottom line is that if you want a great SUV that has a smooth ride and is reliable, go with Lexus. Lexus RX has been the best selling SUV for many good reasons. Lexus buyers are educated enough to know why Lexus is better than the rest.

L FOR LAZY LEXUS

Something wrong is going on with Lexus Corp. The 2016 RX 350 even without the F sport package has loud noises penetrating the cabin. The shifts between gears in the new 8 speed automatic are not smooth as expected from Lexus. The RX was always a comfortable car. That is what Lexus pioneered. Suddenly they are chasing the Germans with this mid life crisis and anahialting a big chunk of there customer base. The build quality in certain areas is impeccable - though other manufacturers are catching up. When's the last time you sat in a Lincoln Black Label trim? The Lexus RX should focus on creating two destinct models. The F sport should be sporty while the regular spec 350 should be super luxurious. I have 4 friends who have the new RX and they ALL regret not extending the lease on the 2013/2015 model they had. They feel the older body style was superior on the comfort side. The 8 speed is not smooth and the car is noisier??

What's with the paint?

After many other makes of SUV's, this is the first "luxury" SUV I've owned/leased. There are many well thought out little things - mirror tilting, rear wiper hidden, door panels folding out, lights for easy entry, options on a whole host of things - radio, lighting, sound effects - all of which I enjoy and appreciate the designed thoughtfulness. However, the paint job is another matter. After 3,500 miles I have a half dozen paint pits , most in the front, but others on the side and back. I have a heavy coat of wax and have not been following any gravel trucks. Never had a vehicle do this and in such quantity particularly with so few miles.

Touchless back door

I have had continuous problems with the Touchless back door. I have had it in to the dealer twice. They could see that it doesn't work as advertised and made some adjustment. I just learned to live with (without) it. However, the other day I walked around behind the RX in the garage on my way out and apparently I triggered something that caused the back door to open. I did not realize it and backed out of the garage with the door open, causing a lot of damage.

For The Bold And Beautiful

I have owned 5 Lexus thru the years starting with a 1995 LS 400 that I still own now......has 130,000 miles and very little repairs needed thru the years, a car I will not ever give up....the body style in one in its own.....LOVE IT! Purchased the gorgeous infared color 2015 RC 350 F Sport that I absolutely love and plan on keeping. I purchased the first RX 300 in 1999, then a 2006 RX 330, a 2015 RX 350, and now the 2017 RX 350. I have loved them all, though now seeing the older RX models they definitely look outdated. The 2015 is still a looker but compared to the new RX design, is quickly getting that outdated, old egg shaped look. I just purchased a Black on Black 2017 RX 350, I love it!.....The exterior gives the magical, mystical, long, shiny, sleek look of a black panther, still keeping that classy look, More modern, and Sets it apart from all the other SUVs on the road, you always know it is Lexus. This is definitely for the bold, beautiful, and magnificent who dare to be different.......the leaders and not the followers. I didn't think Lexus could top the 2015 Model but they have done it. Got the luxury package and all the upgraded packages as well. The triple beam headlights are a must and light the corners and whole surrounding area when turning remarkably well, like Iv'e never seen before an any car/SUV. The Mark Levinson Stereo system sounds incredible. The interior is still as pretty with the luxury package, and a tad bit more room. Still has the classic smooth ride of luxury. I believe the other auto makers will soon follow and try to compete. I recommend this car but hope everyone doesn't run out and buy one because I love it, there are not many on the roads yet, I love to be different.

Hard to Beat the RX 350

I've had it for a few months. Over 2K miles, including some road trips. Extremely quiet, solid ride on the highway. Feels very safe, fun to drive, easy handling on roads and parking, good acceleration, great gas mileage (27-30hwy/26 city), great sound system, love the 12" screen on the navigation/entertainment system. Great interior touches, contrast stitching. Drove the Murano before buying the Lexus. Loved the anti-gravity seats, so would like to see more comfort in the Lexus seats, but handling much better than the Murano. No experience with service yet, but so far very reliable and no problems.

We liked the car so much we bought two.

My wife has red and I have beige. Love them both. These are our fourth and fifth Lexus we have owned. We tend to keep our cars a long time. These are probably the best cars we have owned. We have had them for four months as of mid-August, 2016. This is in spite of the weird grill, which is an obstacle to overcome. At least the 350 is not as bad as the F Sport, with the really hideous grill. Looks like a monster going down the road with its mouth open and teeth missing.

The car for people who want their car to work

I tested many crossovers. Lexus has the most comfortable seats, quietest ride. Don't get sports wheels; it's not a sports car. Ride better without them. Get the seats that don't get hot in the sun; best invention ever (except antibiotics and vaccines). Get third party car play and skip any built in software. Google and Apple are better. According to my research, it is the car least likely to be in the shop during your lease.

Happy with my 5th Lexus Rx350

I am happy with the deal I received at Keys Lexus, which was not matched by a local dealer or three that were recommended by Edmunds. I would have liked different interior choises. I could not get grey, what I wanted and so I chose Palomino. This came with brown dash, which I am less than thrilled with. The car drives and handles superbly and the ride is the best of all of the RX 350s I have owned. I would have loved to have more technology, but they were cost prohibitive for me. My last one only got 17 MPG and I am hoping for much better mileage in this car. I have not owned the car long enough to rate this car correctly.

Can not trust lexus anymore

Don't get fooled by the look of this SUV. The interior is made with cheap materials the dashboard cracks from heat exposure and also the buttons to control the heat setting melt off due to heat exposure. I was told there has been a lot of problems with this so a recall was open a year later still fighting to get it fixed come to find out it is now my responsibility UNBELIEVABLE never will purchase a lexus again.

Vibration Uncharacteristic for Lexus

Major problem with vibration at idle, but much worse when accelerating at any speed. refuse to take this $52,000 vehicle on long trips. It has become an around town car and very disturbing that the Dearler has no idea why it's vibrating after experiencing and agreeing it is not normal. Lexus has also been called and they do have other vehicle with the same problem, but to remedy or how to fix it. Pathetic to say the least as our family has had seven Lexus vehicles and now that we have retired we downsized to one vehicle. The RX350. Not pleased with Lexus or our Dealer with a car just over 5,000. Oh, forgot to make note that the dealer has known about this problem when I brought this to their attention at 994 miles on the Vehicle. Beware RX350 owners as you may not even realize you have a problem. Since your year purchased doesn't work we purchased our RX350 in January 2016.

Summary:

2016 rx350 is a new platform. the passenger side car passing indicator does not always indicate a car in the "blind spot". after driving the car for a few months, i notified my local lexus dealer. my salesman and i drove my vehicle for a test run and the problem consistently arose. the salesman said that this was a new experience for him in a lexus vehicle with this feature. lexus had a team inspect the vehicle. lexus said that the lack of the passing indicator to see all vehicles in the blind spot was normal for the 2016 lexus rx 350. i have driven the car for 8 months. i first noticed the apparent malfunction driving back to pa from fl. i believe that the car passing indicator system uses relative differences of speed between my car and the car being passed to activate the feature. for example, the indicator light will not go on while i pass a car a much greater speed than the car being passed. i would guess the difference may be 20 mph or so. however, if i pass a car slowly or at a low difference of speed, the car passing indicator light functions as one would expect. of interest is that my wife has a 2013 lexus rs350 with a car passing indicator system and her car will always indicate a car in the blind spot regardless of how fast the rs350 passes another vehicle. the lack of indicating a vehicle in the right blind spot at all times in my vehicle is dangerous. this safety feature has poor design. the 2016 was just introduced in late 2015. lexus knows about this problem and calls it a normal function. i have not yet received an adequate explanation from lexus why the car passing indicator system in the 2016 rx350 was designed this way purposely. i believe that this issue is a serious flaw. i have enclosed two documents i have received from lexus. i did not ask for protection under the lemon law.
