Maine License Plate Information Summary

License plates in Maine are issued by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles. You renew your license plates when you renew your registration. You will get stickers that will allow police to know if your plates are out of date. In general, you have the option to transfer old plates to a new car you purchase.

Maine License Plates Offered

Maine offers standard plates, vanity plates, disability plates, and plates that support various organizations. Contact the BMV to discuss your options if you want a non-standard Maine license plate.

For the majority of vehicle, you need two plates – one of the front and one on the back. For motorcycles and trailers, you will need only one Maine license plate on the back.

When you purchase your car from a dealership, you will get temporary tags good for 14 days. Active service members of the military will have a full 20 days to use their temporary tags before they need to get official Maine license plates.

Unlike several other states, your dealership cannot get official license plates for you. Instead, you have to do it yourself at a Maine BMV office.

When You Need To Get Maine License Plates

If you buy from a dealer, you get 14 or 20 days to register your vehicle and get Maine license plates. If you buy from a private seller or move into the state, you get 30 days.

Keeping Your License Plates Up To Date

Whenever your registration is about to expire, you need to renew your license plates. You can sign up to get a reminder email sent to you. Once you renew, you will get a new sticker to put on the rear license plate.

If Your Maine License Plates Are Stolen

Should your Maine license plates be stolen or damaged, the first thing you have to do is draw a picture of the plate and number an affix that to your vehicle. Then you must go to the BMV in person and pay $5 for the plate, or $5.50 for plates with new stickers. You are given 24 hours to do so.

Transferring Or Surrendering Your Maine License Plates

You will have to surrender your plates if you cancel your auto insurance or move out of state.

You can transfer your old license plates to your new car, as long as you buy it within a year of selling or donating the old car. You will be charged $8 for the transfer process.

For passenger cars, license plates cost $35. For motorcycles, the fee is $21.
