The 2001 Toyota Tundra comes with one of two engine options, and which You're using dictates the engine oil capacity. One option is the 3.4L V6, which takeS5.5 quarts of SAE 5W-30 synthetic motor oil. The larger option, the 4.7L 8 cylinder engine, also uses SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil, but has a capacity of 6.6 quarts. In a pinch, it's also possible to use SAE 5W-40 conventional oil in either configuration, but this is not recommended. To understand the reason for this, we need to first understand oil weights and their meaning. The numbers each represent oil viscosity --- first, at startup temperature, and next, at operating temperature. Since lower numbers are better, the SAE 5W-40 will have an inferior viscosity at operating temperature, which will prematurely wear Your engine if it's used over the long term.

The base engine the 3.4L V6 in the 2001 Toyota Tundra requires 5.5 quarts of 5W30 (all temperatures) or 10W30 (above 0 F). The optional 4.7L V8 engine requires 6.6 quarts of 5W30 (all temperatures) or 10W30 (above 0 F).
