BMW has approved either 5w30 or 5w40 synthetic oil for the three engines that are available in the 2006 BMW X5: the 3.0l v6 with a capacity: 7.9 quarts, the 4.4l v8 listed at a capacity of 8.5 quarts, and the 4.8l v8 has a capacity of 8.5 quarts as well. Make sure that it is the right type when choosing oil for the car, but also check for the APiApproval seal when choosing oil for the vehicle, as this will let You know that the oil is licensed for use on all BMW vehicles. When changing the oil, You can use different types of oil, but remember that it must be completely empty before refilling with other oils, and make sure to never mix them.
