The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 series uses SAE 5W-30 oil and will take 6 quarts to completely fill after a change. Chevrolet recommends using synthetic oil whenever You need to change it. The two types of oil that are common these days are synthetic and conventional. Synthetic is engineered to give You better lubrication and protection compared to the conventional petroleum based option. Synthetic oil also needs to be changed less frequently meaning You can go 7,500 miles between changes compared to the 3,500 to 5,000 with conventional. It is a good idea to get in a habit of checking Your oil at least once a month to make sure that it is full and free from damage or burning.
