The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu comes with one of three different engine configurations -- You'll either have a 1.5 liter 4Cylinder turbocharged engine, a 1.8L 4Cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine, or a 2.0 liter 4Cylinder turbocharged engine. Both turbo variants require the use of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil -- the smaller will take 4.2 quarts, while the larger takeS5.0 quarts. The 1.8L engine requireS5.3 quarts of SAE 5W-20, though SAE 5W-30 can be substituted in the short term. The substitution is not recommended, if it's avoidable. When You use a thicker oil with a higher weight, You're introducing friction to the engine. Over time, this will cause premature wear and tear, which will eventually cause the engine to fail sooner.

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu's oil capacity is dependent on the engine type. The Ecotec 1.5L DOHC I-4 can hold 4 quarts, the Ecotec 2.0L DOHC I-4 hold 5 quarts and the oil capacity for the Ecotec 1.8L Hybrid is 5.3. The suggested oil type is SAE 5W-30 full synthetic engine oil.
