Toyota has an auto start stop feature that is standard on the 2019 Highlander. This system will turn off Your engine when You are stopped with Your foot on the brake, and start it again when You release the brake to go for the gas. This can help save fuel while You are driving around town in stop and go traffic. If You want to disable the start stop feature all You need to do is press the button that is located on the steering wheel that has an A in it with a circular arrow around it. This is the button that controls the start stop feature and when You press it You will see an indicator light on the dash to let You know it is off.

You can disable the auto stop mode temporarily by pressing the A-Off button in the switch cluster to the left of the steering wheel. Note, this must be turned off every time you start the vehicle. You cannot permanently disable the stop-start mode in a vehicle setting. This is a poor design decision by Toyota as it can be argued that stopping the engine automatically can be a safety hazard.

If you live near Fairmont WV and drive a 2018 or 2019 Toyota Highlander the AutoStop Eliminator company would make you one of their OBD2 devices that will keep start/stop turned off permanently. For the first person with a Highlander they probably would not charge you for their device and may pay you for your time. This is what they offered me but I live 10 hours away. This would be their first time producing a ODD2 prototype for a Toyota. See them at Autostop eliminator.com 10-02-2022
