If Your BMW X3 has a dead battery and You need to open the tailgate there is only one way to do it manually and it is from inside the cabin. Most of the time the liftgate's release latch will work even with low power, but if the battery is completely dead You will need to follow these steps. First You will need to get into the vehicle and get to the cargo area. Once You are in there remove the cover on the cargo area to get under the floor. Now You can release the jack that is stored in the center of the area. Behind the jack mounting spot You will find a handle that You can grab and that will release the latch to the liftgate and it can be manually opened.
