To open the fuel door in a Subaru Forester You will need to first locate the fuel door lever. This is low down on the floor on the driver's side of the vehicle. When You pull up on this lever while the vehicle is unlocked it will open the fuel door at the rear of the car. Once the door has been opened You can go around to it and remove the gas cap and fill it with gas. When You are done fueling You will need to twist the gas cap until You hear it click a few times to allow it to seat back in place with the fuel filler neck. When You are done with that You can close the door to the cap and drive off.

On the 2021 Forrester you just push on the door over the gas cap, there's no release lever

The mixed messaging is because of a change - Older Foresters have the driver-side floor lever. On Fifth generation (SK; 2018) and newer Foresters, the floor lever has been deleted (removed). When the car is unlocked the fuel door opens by simply pushing in on it. If the car is locked then the fuel door is also locked and won't open. If the fuel door does not open on your 2018 or newer Forester by pressing on it, try unlocking the car first then press on the fuel door to open it.

To open the fuel filler lid, pull the lid release lever up. The lever is on the floor at the left of the driver's seat. Then unscrew that gas cap on your Subaru Forester.

Access to tank by pressuring firmly on the rear section of the cover plate - no interior controls.
