The powertrain warning light may come on intermittently in the Ford Ranger and disappear after shutting off and restarting the truck. However, it usually indicates the ECU has stored an error code and is letting the driver know there is a fault in the Ranger's transfer case or transmission. The best way to clear the message is to have the truck scanned for specific error codes and repair the issue. Alternatively, many owners report experiencing no malfunctions after allowing the code to disappear after a shut off and start cycle. A common but less threatening reason why the powertrain warning displays is due to electrical harnesses in the engine compartment that have become unseated. The safest way to reset the powertrain warning is to have it diagnosed.

To reset the powertrain error light on the ford ranger, simply disconnect the battery, wait 30 seconds and reconnect it.

To reset the powertrain light on the ford ranger, you should have the vehicle inspected because it will only come on if there is a problem.

The power train light will alluminate if you have run your battery flat. If your battery is faulty or does not have enough charge in it , then the power train light indicates that it may not change gears correctly.

Referring to Blessings comment. I have been experiencing the same issues. Had the intercooler and sensor replaced and still the same. Frustrated like hell.
You will need an OBD2 scan tool to reset fault codes

If your referring to resetting the service light after engine oil change, turn ignition on put in reverse, hold brake & throttle pedals down for 30sec, back to park turn off ignition done

You will find that alot of the time when the ranger powertrain spanner light comes on and goes off on its own, its the egr gas recirculation sensor which sits in the middle of the engine manifold that is faulty, lift up the plastic top cover, you will see the plug for the sensor half way down the top of the engine unplug it and carefully unscrew the sensor from the manifold, screw the new one in clip the plug back together plastic cover back on clear all faults and that should have fixed it. Fault code normally p040d
Can some please helpi have had an problem with my batry for 2 days now and this morning the powertrain light came on and does not want to start
