Hill Descent assist technology in the Ford Focus is designed to work with the car's anti-lock brakes and traction control to maintain a constant descent speed down a steep incline. The feature will control the speed and braking of the vehicle automatically, between 2-12 mph, much like cruise control. To deactivate it, push the Hill Descent control button at the top left corner of the center information screen or increase speed to over 40 mph. The feature will also shut down when the vehicle's ignition is switched off. To activate it, depress the button again. A chime will sound to indicate the system is active. Set the desired speed with either the accelerator or brake pedal. Then remove foot. The Focus will descend at the preferred pace and allow the driver to concentrate on steering.

The button to turn Hill Assist on and off is on the left hand side of the automatic gear shift of my Ford Focus SE. It's silver and blends with the trim. Had I not hit it by accident, I would never have known it was there.
