If You notice a check engine light on in Your Ford F-250 that means that the ECU has detected a fault with something in Your truck. I recommend getting off the road as soon as it is safe to prevent more damage to Your engine or other components. Once You are stopped You will want to use an OBD II scan tool to read any codes that are stored in Your engine's ECU. The most common problem is a loose gas cap that will lead to a vacuum leak error. If Your check engine light was caused by a small fault usually clearing the code will turn off the light on the dash however if it was a large problem that will not work. When there is a big fault You will need to repair or replace the components that caused the light to turn on in the first place.

On the ford f-250 you can reset the check engine light by inserting your key into the ignition to the ii position wait for a bit then turn off, repeat two or three more times to reset.
I have done both of these things and the stored code will not clear.

Plug the odb tool into the panel beneath the steering column. Turn the ignition to "ii" and turn the odb tool on to reset the check engine light.
