The kind of oil the Chevy Sonic takes iS5w-30. Having high quality oil is key for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into issues with the oil at some point. A common problem is an awful burning odor. This needs to be viewed closely as soon as possible or the car might explode. Bad oil can cause the engine to fail. Knocking noise may show up from the engine. You could experience poor gas mileage. Your oil needs to be changed out someday. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles or so is a good rule of thumb. If You don't replace it, there will be problems with the engine.

The oil used on a chevy sonic is the following: stp full synthetic high mileage 5w-30 engine oil 5 quart. The part number is stpsh5w305q and it is priced at $23.99.
As an engine gets older and worn I always go to a thicker oil. I never stick to the manufacturer. They want you to use 5-20 w. That's like water. After warranty, go 10w30 get some viscocity back in that engine.i know some will argue, but after the warranty period is over. You become the warranty. Engine gets worn and the spaces in there need thicker oil.
