The recommended antifreeze or coolant used for the 2005 Ford Escape is FordGold with A50/50 mixture of distilled water. The coolant is not used for actual cooling the engine but it is used to stop rust formation inside the coolant system and lower the freezing temperature. The differences in the coolant ingredients are made because engine blocks are made of different metals and will require different chemicals to stop the rust formation on hose metals. As the best antifreeze specified for their engines, Ford Motorcraft or FordGold is the antifreeze suggested by Ford. To really identify it, it is an green or yellow color and is an extended-life coolant, known for working up to 100,000 miles.

2002 used standard green 3-year coolant. 2003 Transitioned from green to "ford gold" 5-year coolant in mid-year.
