There is no location for the cabin air filter on the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu because it doesn't use a cabin air filter. Instead it uses a plastic mesh that prevents leaves or other contaminants from entering the HVAC system. Unlike the cabin air filter, this plastic mesh doesn't need to be replaced at all. Chevy did start using the cabin air filter in the Malibu starting in the year 2013. For that year and like many other vehicles the location of it is on the passenger side and behind the glovebox. If the 2008 used one, it would need to be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles in normal conditions or around 10,000 mile sin extreme conditions but since it doesn't use one, it obviously doesn't need replaced.

I have a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ3.6. I just dropped the glove box door to the location that most cabin air filters are, and found that the manufacturer did not add a cabin air filter in this model. There is a large rectangular filter shaped dotted line that reads “CUT ALONG THE DOTTED LINES TO ADD CABIN AIR FILTER”. It is plastic.
