You'll find the starter in Your 2013 Ford Explorer underneath the engine, attached to the transmission bell housing. The easiest way to trace it, is going to be to follow the positive lead of Your battery; it'll be directly attached to the starter. The best approach for accessing it is going to be to jack up Your Explorer and come at it from the bottom, where You'll find it a lot easier to remove the engine wiring harness and then the bolts mating it to the block, after which it'll just drop down (careful that You're not directly under it and neglecting to hold it when it does!) Even though this is an older vehicle, O'Reilly still caries a compatible part, the Ultimate Select Starter, N613369A, for $177. If You're okay with a re-manufactured one, that'll typically shave about $45 off the price.

The 2013 ford explorer starter is under and to the right-hand side (passenger side) of the engine compartment.

Starter sets on top of manifold. Have to take air filter housing and hose out to get to it.
