The thermostat in a 2013 Ford Taurus can be found in a housing that is located on one of the coolant lines that is to the lower right side of the alternator. This is a thermostat that controls where the coolant goes in Your vehicle. The thermostat has the job of measuring the coolant temperature and then sending it through the radiator or heater core depending on the HVAC settings in Your car. If You have a thermostat that is failing You will usually get a check engine light since the ECU will not know the temperature of the coolant. This can lead to situations where Your engine could overheat so it is a good idea to always replace it if it is failing.

The thermostat is next to the Head on the opposite side of the engine from the alternator. I'm not sure why you thought this was correct but it's nowhere near the alternator
