The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) in a Ford F-150 is located on the rear section of the transmission. This sensor measures the transmission/transaxle output or wheel speed. Common signs that You have a faulty VSS sensor are that the transmission revs higher before it changes gears. The car's transmission engages into overdrive late and sometimes will never go into that top gear. You may also experience erratic speedometer readings and not being able to use the cruise control. You can probably drive Your car to the mechanic with a bad sensor, but it would be a very bad idea to drive it any further than that.
