If the volume knob on the 2018 Chevy Malibu is not working there can be a couple of common reasons. The first is that the knob has stripped the thread, which means it will turn but not do anything. This will need a new knob, which will cost about 15 to 20 dollars. Secondly, the wires that are powering the radio may have burned out, which means the volume will not work. That said You would notice more issues than just the volume. It is also possible the fuse box has burned out, in which case You will want to pop the panel to the left of the steering wheel and check the fuse. A new one will cost about 10 dollars.

It has nothing to do with knob or wires, common issue with radio module not waking up after going to sleep. Communication protocol need update

Don't worry, I'm sure nothing is burned out.There's an issue with this car and GM is well aware of it but they aren't going to address it. Just like with the steering issue.
