2017 Cadillac XT5 Review: Unreliable Luxury SUV With Some Expensive Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Jun 13, 2023

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 lasts around 150,000 miles with some serious engine and transmission issues. At $19,995 to $38,500, it’s cheaper than the competition, but not worth the money when sudden failures can cost thousands to repair.

likeFilled The Good
Interior materials are high-quality, the rear seats have plenty of room and the suspension is smooth on rough roads.
dislikeFilled The Bad
At highway speed the engine may not be quick enough, there’s not a lot of rear headroom and there’s not as much room for cargo.

Is the 2017 Cadillac XT5 a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2017 is a bad year for the Cadillac XT5 since it has more mechanical problems than other years, making it one to avoid. Owner reviews complain about some electrical issues, low build quality, along with error lights.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are very nice for an SUV in its price range, the cabin and seats are very comfortable, cargo is a bit lower than average.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are some traction control and transmission issues found on the 2017 XT5. Avoid models from 2017, while 20182022 are more reliable choices.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is okay from the standard V6 engine, which is reasonably powerful for an SUV of its size.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2017 XT5 is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera as well as parking sensors. Optional upgrades include automatic braking, lane keep assist, along with adaptive cruise control.

  • Value 7/10 – The 2017 Cadillac XT5 is cheaper than some competitors, but it also depreciates faster than average, lowering its overall value score.

It has plenty of room. In the cargo area.
I like it because of its comfort and ease of handling. The style and beauty is better than my old car and I get great gas mileage.

Perks of driving a 2017 Cadillac xt5.
It is perfect size SUV. But yet not to big. Love the luxury feel in the way it drives and handles! It has all tech options plus dual DVD for my grandkids. I also like the fact that it has the flex fuel and drops down to being a 4 cylinder when it is not needed to use all six cylinders. But it is nice this it has the get up and go of a 6 cylinder vehicle. Also it has option for all wheel drive or touring mode. My husband likes that it can así be shifted manually.

The crash rating and safety are at the best with a 5 star rating
The performance is smooth and the V6 engine is wonderful for power. This car has a fantastic crash rating and is an overall comfortable ride.

Cadillac is luxury and sport.
It is a great family car. I like that it is a luxury SUV but I do not like that it handles like a car. It drives sporty which is nice for the pick up but the ride is a little bumpy. I love all of the options and features that it has; the heated steering wheel, heated seats, the panoramic sunroof, and the park assist. It has the capability to wireless charge your phone but it does not work on all phones. My favorite feature of all on the car is that I have an app where I can start my car or unlock my doors at any time from the touch of my smartphone. I can also track my car which is helpful because I have a teenager.
accountCircle Lt L
Great family and durable vehicle.
My favorite part of my vehicle are the automatic features such as the wipers, walker alert, back up camera, sensor, and crash protection. It is super reliable and is actually pretty good on gas as far as mileage. I wish the trunk was a little bigger because once I put my child's stroller in nothing else really fits.
accountCircle TONI C
My vehicle is sophisticated and refined. It has many features.
I have no complaints about my vehicle. I like the way it drives and the looks of it.
accountCircle Megan M
Great price for the versatility.
I love the option to carry several passengers or to move the seats for more cargo. I love most the fact that the driver's seat has an leg support extender on it since I am very tall. I enjoy all the safety/convenience features and the open feeling of the panoramic roof.
accountCircle Shirley S
It is the right height for me. I have arthritis in both knees.
I drive the crossover Cadillac because it is the right height for me. A sedan is too low and hard on my knees when I go to get out. The big SUV is too tall and you have to climb into it. My car gets pretty good gas mileage I have a good warranty and never seem to have many problems with it.

I hate this xt5. It has squeaky brakes. I am afraid that it is unsafe.

Electrical and Cue issues
Bought this as a Cadillac certified car. It was the GSM's wifes car. Have had electrical issues since day 3. Car says "service Power Steering". They change the thermostat housing per GM. 4th trip and still have problem. Now we can add "service active system". The bluetooth has not worked since day 5. If you say call xxxxx, it says not a good address and sends you to navigation. My dealer has bent over backwards trying to fix to no avail. Yesterday, they took my phone and tried it in another Cadillac like it. Worked great. Bought this for my 80 year old Mother. She is not a happy camper as she can not use the phone and other bluetooth options. Called Cadillac. Did not care. I guess it is because we bought it as a Cadillac Certified and not new. I told them I could not afford a new one in todays times as I am self employed. For what they get for one of these, they could at least care in Detroit. My dealer cares 100 times more. To Detroit, I am just a number.

Not built like an expensive car
Absolutely NOT. Had a buick enclave before this, much better made, much quieter. The XT5 has no anchors for the passenger side floor mat , so it keeps folding up and has to be replaced every year. On my 3rd. One. Oh and Cadillac Canada could care less.

Great car, when it's working!
I owned a 2015 XT5 prior to this new one & the 2015 was much better. The 2017 has taken out a lot of the storage in the front console & this one has had several mechanical problems. Apparently when the car computer needs 'update,' which you know nothing about the entire car shuts down no matter where you are! I will say that it's very comfortable & when it's running correctly it is a smooth drive.

This vehicle sometimes has issues with the engine and just when the warranty is about to expire all the problems begin. However when your warranty expires that is when the most expensive repairs begin and instead of buying a new car we chose to pay off the vehicle to eliminate the monthly car payment. Cadillac xt5.. Good commuter car.
I have had no major issues with my vehicle since purchasing it 6 months ago. It is comfortable for daily usage and is very comfortable on long drives. My only complaint is that the storage is not all that big. If I knew I would waited and gotten the xt6.

Dealing With a Few Problems
On several occasions my vehicle has made a loud thud when I tried to put it in reverse. It’s as if the transmission refuses to allow the vehicle to reverse and once it engages, its as if it’s being slammed. Even though I’m pressing the brake pedal, the car jumps backwards with such force. This has occurred when I’m on an ever so slight incline as the driveway. Another issue, i parked the car for 1/2 hour while shopping. I always make sure the radio, a/c and lights are off before engaging the start engine button. I unlocked the vehicle using my fob, and attempted to drive home but it was 100% dead...wouldn’t start anything. No engine, no electrical. Nothing. This was after dark which made it more concerning for me being alone and not able to get home. I exited the vehicle and started doing anything I could to what to do next. The only thing that came to mind is use my key fob. I pressed the lock and unlocked door button as well as the auto lift gate. Once I saw I was getting the lights to blink when I pressed the unlock button and the tailgate to open, I figured there was some communication with the battery or computer components. I got back into the car and attempted to start it again with luck this time. It hasn’t done it again. The third issue is a bit unnerving as on several occasions the blind spot indicators in my side view mirrors have failed several times. I narrowly missed hitting a vehicle attempting to change lanes. Finally, I abhor the thick, wide, bulky windshield posts. They are a hazard in that objects are significantly blocked from view. These factors will surely be a deal breaker in any possibility of purchasing another Cadillac SUV.

What Do Critics Say About the Cadillac XT5?

  • Consumer Reports says the Cadillac XT5 isn’t as rewarding to drive as German SUVs, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the XT5 at 4/5, praising the comfortable suspension, but doesn’t like the frustrating technology interface.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the XT5 a 4.2/5, enjoying the spacious cabin, but owners don’t like that it doesn’t offer three-row seating.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Cadillac XT5 Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Cadillac XT5 include check engine lights, transmission failures, along with some Bluetooth issues. Overall, these problems are worse than other luxury SUVs, leading to more expensive repair costs as the XT5 ages.

Check engine lights are the most widespread complaint from 2017 XT5 owners in the first 50,000 miles. There are a lot of reasons a check engine light can turn on, and using an OBD-II scan tool helps diagnose the source of the light. Usually, the problem is caused by an emissions system issue, including the sensors, or a problem with the catalytic converter. Repairing the issues can cost $350 to $1,800, depending on the source.

Transmission failures have also been reported on some 2017 Cadillac XT5 models at around 60,000 miles. If the transmission fails it can either be rebuilt for around $2,000, or replaced with a new unit for roughly $3,500. Either way, they are very expensive to replace, which helps make the XT5 one buyers should avoid.

Bluetooth issues show up on some Cadillac XT5 models at roughly 5,000 miles. There are software updates for the stereo system which improve its reliability. Most dealers will install these updates for free, while some charge around $50.

There’s only one recall on the 2017 XT5, which is better than other luxury SUVs. The recall covers front brake calipers, which may leak brake fluid. Cadillac will replace the brake caliper assembly on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2017 Cadillac XT5 Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Cadillac XT5 may last around 150,000 miles, which is much shorter than other luxury SUVs like the Lexus RX. Regular annual maintenance costs are much higher than many competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $776 per year.

As a used 2017 Cadillac XT5 reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the transmission mounts for $450, the heater core costing $700, along with the muffler which costs around $1,800.

The FWD button is close to the drink holders and it get sticky from the drinks. That makes it hard to turn on the FWD.

accountCircle Tabitha O

It does not have any problems anymore. I did have to replace the alternator on a road trip back from Missouri to Nevada.

accountCircle Maddie N

Overall yes it is reliable. The technical issues do not affect the cars overall driving ability. More reliable than previous vehicle had.

accountCircle Lori W

The 2018 Cadillac XT5 is safe and reliable. The only drawback is poor gas mileage. The safety ratings are available and solid.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 8-inch touchscreen with the CUE software, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optional upgrades include a more powerful stereo.

Standard safety technology is good with a rearview camera and rear parking sensors.

Optional advanced driver assistance features include:

  • Head-up display
  • Following distance indicator
  • Front pedestrian detection
  • Automatic braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front parking sensors

Is the 2017 Cadillac XT5 a Good Value?

No, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 is not a good value since it has significantly more problems than many other years, making it one to avoid. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $19,995 to $38,500, making it less than a Porsche Cayenne or Mercedes GLE. When new, the price range was $39,395 to $62,895. Depreciation is worse than other SUVs, losing about 15% of its value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The Cadillac XT5 is a new midsize SUV introduced for the 2017 model year.

2017: First model year for the Cadillac XT5, built to be a comfortable luxury midsize SUV.

2018: No major changes from earlier years.

2019: More standard safety features and driver aids, larger wireless device charging pad.

2020: New sport trim introduced, base model renamed to Luxury, standard 2.0L four-cylinder on all models, and a redesigned infotainment interface.

2021: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added.

How Does the Cadillac XT5 Compare to the Competition?

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 is a bad luxury SUV since it has more problems than many competitors, making it one that buyers should avoid. If you really want an XT5 go for a newer year, where a lot of the reliability issues have been fixed.

The BMW X5 is another luxury SUV which costs around $8,000 more. Performance is better in the BMW X5, while the Cadillac XT5 offers slightly more comfortable seats. We recommend the BMW X5 since there are fewer serious issues reported as it ages.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV which can be found for about $2,000 less. Passenger room is better in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Cadillac XT5 offers a more luxurious interior with higher-quality materials. We recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee since they are more affordable to own long-term.

Comfortable luxurious ride.
I have had no issues with this vehicle. The seats are very comfortable, I love that is has navigation, heated seats and heated steering wheel. I am also able to remote start my car which is a huge plus where I live. It has a very smooth ride, quiet ride. My only complaint would be that the tires are not the best. They used a softer rubber on these tires to ensure a quiet ride but it causes them to wear down more quickly, resulting in replacing them more frequently. I also love that the car has driving sensors all the way around the car and will redirect you back if you are drifting out of your lane.

It does not have a CD player and it is not even an add-on option.
It is comfortable and gets good mpg on the road. I like the size of the vehicle and it is comfortable but we had a Lexus previously and really prefer the Lexus to the Cadillac but the cost of the Lexus prevented us from buying another one. Cadillac needs to have the option of a CD player, a larger NAV screen, and more cup holders.

The Cadillac xt5 is very reliable and the system has a great system that reminds you when service is due. My only complaint is that the opening to the back of the vehicle is unnecessarily narrow and tampers, preventing you from being to carry large items.

It is too complicated to operate and I often don't know how to make it work as I want.
The car is nicely appointed and rides well. I do not like all the electronic, computerized aspects of the car. The owners manual reads like an aircraft manual with so many options and complicated instructions that it takes hours to figure out the simplest task. And often the manual says to go to the Cadillac website for further information on how to make the car do what you want it to do. It is a great example of providing more capability than the average driver can handle, and sticking technology into the vehicle simply because they can.

My car drives like a dream. The pick up is there, the car is luxurious, has apple play, so no need to upgrade technology, is fun to drive. I love and appreciate all of the safety features the car offers. The seat vibrates when you are close to another vehicle of body of some kind. There is a speed identifier, when you are speeding, it is clearly identifiable on the dashboard. There are car and people sensors. When driving by a car or person- icons light up. When you are too close to a car an icon is yellow.

Love my Cadillac, only minor issues, definitely worth the cost.
The 1 real issue is the technology connection, there are glitches & it works about 60-70% of the time. There is a bit of a blind spot but not much difference from other vehicles. I love the style and look, the leather is exceptional, & the small touches make it even more enjoyable! Personally I am very comfortable but my husband (6’3”) is not as comfortable when driving. I will say that it's very comfortable & when it's running correctly it is a smooth drive.

My smooth riding Cadillac xt5.
I love my Cadillac xt5. This car rides so nice and smooth, and it is very roomy. It handles like a charm, and when you need to have some power it does not let you down. The xt5 comes with all the bells and whistles you would expect in a Cadillac. All in all I have been very happy with my 2017 Cadillac xt5!

Luxury, comfort, reliability, beauty.
Extremely comfortable. Not crowded in seat. Beautiful interior. User friendly steering controls. Smooth ride. Looks great from outside with paint job that shines. Luxury feel while driving and for passengers too. Heated seats front and back. The engine that stops when idle is not difficult to get used to. Brand is reliable and car has lived up to that. Maintenance is easy and reminders come through dealership and on star reports.

I love my Cadillac. Everything from the touch screen system to the safety.
I have not had any problems with my Cadillac xt5. I love the way it handles, the ride is smooth. I love the touch screen options. It is a wonderful car. I trust the Cadillac brand. This the third time I have bought their brand. I believe everything it has, is built for my safety.

It has many safety features that alert you to danger.
I like that it has a backup camera. I like that there are sensors all around the vehicle to warn of dangers. I don't like there is no CD player and no way to rewind music on satellite radio like previous car.

I love my new Cadillac t5 car.
My car has very many safety features such as back up camera, brake assist, adaptive cruise. It will parallel park itself. It has Wi-Fi capability,! Onstar and Bluetooth. Great ride with good gas mileage. I get great service at the dealer including free oil change and car wash.

Luxurious, easy to drive, Cadillac xt5.
The features are fantastic, it has the touch screen for navigation and radio controls. It is very reliable and comfortable to drive very long distances. It drives very nice and smooth. It needs seat coolers, it does have heated. It is good on gas. I would recommend the Cadillac xt5.

Smooth quiet vehicle that has a good sound system and plenty of space.
The Cadillac xt5 is a smooth vehicle. Quiet. Bose sound system which is great. Display shows anything from media to tire pressure. The seats can be heated or air conditioned. Same as the steering wheel. The style is modern. Leather seats with sun and moon roof. The media can freeze everyone once in a while unfortunately and the brakes seem to be naturally squeaky. Otherwise there is plenty of trunk space. Comes with a spare tire and net to hook in the back to keep things in the trunk secure.

Luxury with some minor fallbacks.
Auto shut off is annoying. Blind spot monitor is useful. No ac seats. Love the panoramic sunroof but it is annoying that it only opens halfway? Guess it is safety. The back seats are heated so that is awesome I love the heated steering wheel as well. The volume control can be annoying. Also I am obsessed with cue.

After 2 years runs and looks new.
My XT5 is very reliable. The performance is spectacular. It gets good gas mileage and handles well in high traffic areas. I have owned my XT5 for 2 years and with regular oil changes, tire rotations (which comes with the purchase) it handles like it is new. Additionally, hand cleaning the leather seats once or twice a month keeps the interior like new.

Cadillac quality is back and not that expensive as this vehicle has been well thought out.
Nice Crossover vehicle. Comfortable, handles well, and excellent care to detail and finish. Mileage is great for a vehicle of this size. The addition of side mirror directional lights would be nice.

Sunroof. Leather. Keyless start and remote. Comfortable.
I love my car and have had no issues with my car. I have had it for over 2 years now. I would definitely buy another one later on down the road. Comfortable seats, remote start. Big back seat for storage and under floor storage also. All the upgrades I wanted and sunroof.

Xt5 Cadillac has lots of room!
I have just recently purchased my xt5. I downsized from a ford expedition xl, and it is quite a change. I love the way the vehicle responds on the hills and curves. Love the gas mileage it gets! It feels roomy inside even though the vehicle itself is a lot smaller. Heated and cooled seats are the bomb! It even has heated back seats and a heated steering wheel. I was a little concerned that my granddaughter’s car seat would interfere with the space available in the front seat, but again there is plenty of room. Overall it is a great vehicle.

Everything you need to know about a luxury Cadillac!
The Cadillac xt5 rides and drives amazing. The luxury interior has you feeling like a millionaire for affordable payments. I love the heated seats and steering wheel. The backup camera is amazing. The car is super high tech and has so many safety features. It will tell you when you are too close to parking, all around your car. When you are too close to either side of the line, it will vibrate your seat. Which is nice if you work late and tired when your drive. Overall the car is a great purchase! Check it out.

Cadillac for future generations.
The Cadillac xt5 is an excellent vehicle. Safety, value and performance are very good. Quiet ride and style are keys to its status. Looks are solid, but gas mileage leaves much for satisfaction. We would recommend the xt5 for the discerning customer. Enjoy the ride and comfort.

How I feel about my Cadillac
I have had no problems with me car. The only repair was for squeaky brakes and that repair was for free and not required. It runs smooth and is very comfortable. I would recommend this vehicle for its safety features and good looks. I am sure this is the favorite of all the cars I have owned

The camera that helps with parking.
Comfort and convenience and all the extras that are offered on the vehicle. I don't really like the place for your purse.

The elegance and comfort for a great price. It is good on gas. The technology is great and simple to use. It also comes with Onstar and XM radio.

I think that this suv is attractive. But it needs some upgrades.
I hate this xt5. It has squeaky brakes. I am afraid that it is unsafe.
