2010 Chevrolet Cobalt Review: Reliable & Fuel Efficient Compact Car

Sep 1, 2022

The 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt lasts around 200,000 miles with some relatively minor ignition and engine sensor issues. At $4,613 to $8,367, it’s a good value for a basic small car to get you from A to B.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The cabin is quiet for an economy car, the suspension is smoother than other small cars and both of the engines are efficient.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Passenger room is worse than other compact cars, the performance is poor from the base engine and braking distances are very long.

Is the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt a Good Used Car?

  • Yes, 2010 is a good year for the Cobalt earning an average overall rating of 7/10. Owner reviews praise the durable engine, responsive steering, and efficiency.
  • Interior materials are worse than the competitors, with a low interior quality rating of 6/10. There’s a lot of hard plastic and cheap cloth used throughout the cabin, and the stereo system is basic.
  • Reliability ratings are average for a compact car at 7/10. We recommend avoiding models from 20052007 since they have more mechanical issues, and go with a 2008-2010 which are more reliable.
  • Performance is similar to other small cars from the standard engine, but the turbo motor provides excellent power.
  • The 2010 Cobalt is less safe than other compact cars with a 4-star overall crash test rating, but unfortunately only gets a 3-star rating in the driver side impact test.
  • Fuel economy is good at up to 30 MPG, which should get owners about 390 miles of range out of the 13 gallon gas tank. Fuel costs are around $38 lower than other compact cars at $164 per month for 15,000 miles/year.

Great compact and practical car!
It has great gas mileage. Compact so easy to park. Comfortable driving and for being a small car it has a lot of space for if you are traveling. Seats go down to add to trunk. It is a 2 door which the doors are very long so you have to be careful when opening near other cars or traveling with children might not be the best car for you if you have kids.

I love the gas mileage. The driver side window sticks when I try to roll it down.

Great on gas, love this little car!
As far as problems, I don't have many. I have trouble with the tire sensors not reading correctly. The rearview mirror is fading a little due to heat I suppose. The suspension gets wore out, but that's caused by our roads around here. With all vehicles regular maintenance is required of course. It is great on gas. Drives smooth and is very comfortable the seats lean back pretty far. Clean nice appearance. All I am all I love this car.

Chevrolet cobalt with sound control.
Its very fuel efficient. Easy to drive. Has the AUX port so u can play music through your phone. Radio has setting where you can set it to turn volume down while braking. The parts seem to be a reasonable price. The seats are comfortable. Good car for a small to medium person. Not good for large people. Windshield wipers work great.

I enjoy how small and easy it is to drive. My dad bought it for me 11 years ago.
Makes noise now that it is older. Very smooth ride, can take the bad roads where I live. Very reliable, brakes are amazing. Could be more comfortable headrest, but I am used to it now. USB music is my favorite feature. I also love how small and compact it is so I am able to park anywhere I want. The string is also very good, not a rough ride at all. My car gets pretty fast without feeling like I am flying, cannot even tell really.

Cobalt white & turbo. It is a good car.
I love driving it. It is good on gas. My son loves it too. When he grows up he will be getting the car & the truck I have. The truck is silver & the car is white. The truck is two door & the car is four door. Plus the car is turbo & when that kicks in my son loves it.

It is not an extension of myself or how I want to be viewed. I am embarrassed of my car.
I like that I didn't have to pay for it (I swapped cars with a family member) and that it can comfortably fit a car seat. I don't like the design. It looks cheap and after going through a massive hail storm it looks even worse. I also have a lot of maintenance costs and I am constantly anxious about how much longer it will last or if I will get to my next destination.

Electric problems it cut out on you whenever.
The transmission broke down soon as I got the car I just do not feel safe in the car every time I fix one problem other problems come so no I do not want nobody to get this car it electric problem and nobody known how to fix it so you have to take your chancing.

An interesting detail on the vehicle are the spoiler on the trunk
It has had a lot of recalls on it since then, as in three different recalls for the steering wheel, I had to have the whole thing replaced. My car it shakes uncontrollably majority of the time the breaks aren't that good even though I keep the maintenance up on it pretty well, I just feel as if there's not one thing it's another with this car and model make .

Absolutely Terrible
I had my cobalt for 9 years, and although it was good on gas (I travel a lot for work), it had no end of problems. The radio would not work properly from week one. I had 7 recalls, 2 major air conditioner repairs, alignment problems, and many other "minor" issues. At the end, the electrical system was starting to short out (resulting in $300 in repairs for LIGHTS). My family had a LONG history with GM (including working for them) and this car was the final straw for me. Not only would I NEVER recommend this car, I will never buy a GM vehicle again if I can help it. Coming from Canada, we do not have LEMON LAWS- I wish we did...

Chevy cobalt motor vehicle problems.
I have had nothing but problems with my Chevy cobalt. It is a nice little car that runs very good on gas it do not take much to fill it at all but it breaks down very easily. I have had to put 3 motors in the Chevy cobalt I have and I have finally just given up on it when the last time I put a motor in it the transmission started to give out so now I am currently looking for a better car.

Check your dealership for reliability and loyalty I was told It's up to dealership if they want to cover if privately owned
Poor dealership has been customer for many vehicles and the 1 time I had a problem they claimed it wasn't covered under warranty and corporate office says it was but they still refused to cover will never buy again

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Cobalt?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2010 Cobalt is quieter than older models, and has average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Cobalt a 4.2/5 praising the smooth suspension, but doesn’t like the long braking distances.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Cobalt 4.5/5 and enjoy the fuel-efficient engines, but owners don’t like the cramped back seats.

What Common Problems Does the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt Have?

The most common problems found on the 2010 Chevy Cobalt include keys getting stuck in the ignition, the engine running at higher RPMs than normal, and rusted fuel lines. Overall, these problems are similar to other budget-friendly compact cars from 2010, and repair costs are average as well.

The key getting stuck in the ignition is the most widespread complaint from owners at around 25,000 miles. The issue was addressed by a recall which replaces the ignition cylinder and allows the key to be removed.

The engine revving higher than normal is another issue reported by owners at around 80,000 miles. The problem is usually caused by a failing mass airflow sensor on the engine. Replacing the sensor is a simple process, and costs around $150.

Rusted gas lines also show up on some Cobalt models in the first 90,000 miles. The fuel lines on some vehicles have weak welds that rust and fuel can leak from those areas. Replacing the lines costs about $600.

There are 6 recalls, which is similar to other compact cars from 2010. The most serious recall is for the electronic power steering motor which can fail, and is fixed by Chevy replacing the part. Other recalls cover air bags and are not very serious once they have been replaced.

How Long Will the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt Last?

A well-maintained 2010 Chevy Cobalt can last around 200,000 miles, giving it an average durability score of 7/10. It lasts around 50,000 miles less than top-rated competitors like the Honda Civic. Regular annual maintenance costs are comparable to other compact cars, according to data from Repair Pal, at $453 per year.

Since most 2010 Cobalt models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace items including the A/C compressor for $900, the fuel filter costing $500, and the valve cover gasket, which costs $200.

accountCircle Lashonda M

No problems except a small recall. We got that fixed easily thanks to the helpful guys at the dealership though.

accountCircle Angela G

Yes as I mentioned before the cobalt is reliable. Even though it is small it has a nice amount of space. Maintenance for the car is not expensive. Because it is a Chevy parts are readily available for the car. It drives smooth on the road. The only major problem I had was a recall on the passenger air bag. But I took it in to a Chevy dealer and they fixed it.

accountCircle Cristy B

It has its own set of problems yea but as do all vehicles. If service is maintained and good gas put in it runs like a champ.

accountCircle Lisa S

accountCircle Brian S

accountCircle Laurie B

No. Transmission issues at 50,000 miles and again at 95,000. 5 safety recalls, electrical problems, and not as good on gas as they say.

accountCircle Kim D

accountCircle Joan S

The cobalt has been very reliable. I have only had two expensive problems, one was the battery in 2014, and one was the engine in 2016.

How Big Is the Chevy Cobalt?

The 2010 Chevy Cobalt is a compact car similar in size to the Mazda3 and Hyundai Elantra, and is offered as a 2-door coupe or 4-door sedan. It gets an average rating of 7/10 for passenger and cargo space. Passenger room is worse than other compact cars from 2010 in both models, and the back seats are uncomfortable.

Cargo space is good for a compact car, with enough space for 2-4 suitcases in the trunk.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Chevy Cobalt Compare to the Competition?

The 2010 Chevy Cobalt is not our first choice for a compact car, but it’s affordable and isn’t plagued by the problems found on the 20052007 Cobalt models, making it a decent option for buyers.

The Honda Civic is another competitor, which costs about $1,200 more. Passenger room and technology are both better in the Honda Civic, but the SS model of the Chevy Cobalt has more power. We recommend the Honda Civic since they last longer, and are more affordable to own.

The Toyota Corolla is a competitor that costs around $2,500 more. Build quality is significantly better in the Toyota Corolla, but the Chevy Cobalt has more responsive steering and power. We recommend the Toyota Corolla for a used car since it will last substantially longer than the Chevy Cobalt.

Do Owners Recommend the Chevy Cobalt?

accountCircle Lashonda M

Yes. It is lightweight and drives nicely. It is simplistic, yet it meets my needs. I love Chevrolet in general.

accountCircle Angela G

Yes it is. Gas mileage is good as well and the maintenance to keep the car up is affordable. It is very easy to get into the compact parking spaces, I like how smooth it is on the road, when you go over bumps you don't feel it so much, more do you feel every bump on the road. It is a reliable car. Great starter car for a small family or young adult.

accountCircle Lisa S

It is a great vehicle. I have only had major issues with it two times in seven years. It is great on gas mileage, so it is great to drive on vacations.

accountCircle Will S

It’s okay. It’s a good first car but it starts to tear apart after 100,000 miles. Makes a lot of noises.

accountCircle Christopher T

Yes I love my car. So easy to drive, so easy to take care of. it's just the right size for me. Also it's pretty good on gas

accountCircle Bridget S

It drives great and is good on gas but the maintenance is awful! At 50,000 miles the transmission had to be rebuilt even though I kept up on oil maintenance and it was taken care of and driven correctly. There have been 5 recalls on safety. Not even at 100,000 miles yet and the transmission is acting up again. Poor attempt at a Cavalier upgrade.

accountCircle Joel F

Yes, I have had it for 9 years and it has always been dependable and needed very few repairs. The upkeep is inexpensive and the gas mileage is very good.

I really don't have an issues other than yearly keep up of my car such as tires and oil change, it is a good car. All the features and the ride of it is smooth. It is big enough to fit all of my family into it and it's completely reliable. Reliable 11 year old Chevy cobalt.
I consider my Chevy cobalt, my first Chevy purchase after purchasing a different brand for years, to be very reliable. It is 11 years old and in great shape, other than a few chips on the windshield from highway driving (some have been fixed) and a little rust beginning at the bottom of the driver side door. It had been driven regularly for years for a commute of 30-60+ minutes each way, so it has racked up some miles. The only issue I recall is the check engine light came on within the first few years. It may have been the gas cap. When the check engine light comes on, the auto-start does not work until corrected. The check engine light again turned on about 2 years ago, also right after pumping gas, so I believe that issue is related to the gas cap, I have not fixed it. The tire sensors have begun to malfunction, as well. Two of them are no longer working, but the car is 11 years old and people survived without tire sensors for years. The Chevy warranty on new cars is nice for the first few years, too.

Clean interior with tinted windows and cute body style.
Basic airbags replacement needed and radiator issues of needing to also be replaced. There can be a minor gas leak from time to time. The sensors on the car also go out and the check engine light is always on but overall good for a regular car that I have had for a year now and runs good on gas.

Chevy cobalt: basic but reliable.
Since it is an old base model, it does not have many features at all. I really wish the base cobalt had at least cruise control on it. Otherwise, I have had the car for 8 years and 120,000 miles and the car has held up incredibly well. It still runs well, gets good mileage and is a perfect size for one person.

My car is fun to drive and easy to drive. It does not have all the bells and whistles and I wish it had power windows, but I love it. Powerful, quiet, and it is fun to drive. It is also a reliable car that I can count on. My pup loves going for rides when it is time to go.

I like my car because of the size. I am a shorter woman and the car fits comfortably for me. Not to mention, I like the fact it is an older model. It is safe and I can still use Bluetooth without all the added electronics. The seats are comfortable and since I have a little sister, it is nice they are easy to clean. The radio is really easy to work.

Chevy cobalt: great smooth ride, no room.
My vehicle rides pretty smoothly and gets us where we need to be. The only problem I would say about it is that it is very small, and we have 2 babies in the house, so that means someone needs to stay home alone with a baby. I personally cannot think of any other problems; it has been riding quite smoothly for 5+ years now.

It has a nice spoiler on the back.
Had previous piston firing issues. Had an oil leak. Overall has been reliable for the 10 years I have had it. Good ac, seats show minimal wear. A lot of trunk space. Backseat is slightly uncomfortable due to only have 2 doors. Headlights fog up pretty easily and can gain condensation in the lens.
accountCircle Ca R on April 19, 2021
Why a cobalt might be the used car you need.
Tire pressure sensors occasionally go out, tires make loud rumbling noises while driving, car occasionally shakes when going fast on the highway. Car itself performs well, can go up to 90 mph safely without feeling like the car is going to run off the road. Very reliable, had the car for almost 10 years now. Car is pretty comfortable, back seat could be bigger for passengers but can fit 4 comfortably or 5 uncomfortably. Large trunk is a plus.
accountCircle Eshon H on April 10, 2021
Good gas mileage but no room.
The Chevy cobalt is a fairly reliable vehicle although it's a little on the small side. The major concerns are that the wheels are too small and they get easily dented on potholes. This has caused me to have to replace plenty of tires over the years. However, the gas mileage on the Chevy cobalt is excellent.

I do not have any problems. With solid chassis, respectable powertrains, and attractive interiors, the cobalt is available as a sedan or coupe. The seats offer long-haul comfort and the car offers overall good fit and finish. The sporty ss is a blast to drive; the turbo engine sounds good and pulls hard.

It is ok, we bought it used in 2012. However the big design fault is there is no backlight for the daytime speedometer. 10 years and going strong, but be aware of anti-theft system.
I have had this car for ten years. It is still in such great condition, I expect it could last another ten years! The only issue I have had was an electrical problem - the anti-theft system had a 'glitch' in it and would go into effect at random times, preventing the car from starting. The guys at the garage said it is an odd glitch, so if there's something weird going on with yours, I'd make sure to mention the anti-theft system malfunctioning. I have put moderate wear on the car, including a job that had required lots of travel. If Chevy still made this car, I would buy it again once this one is ready to be retired.

New is not always better.
I bought this certified pre owned vehicle in may of 2012. One feature that I enjoyed the most was a CD player. My previous vehicle had a cassette player and had to use cables and a portable CD player which worked but was not easy to handle in the car. Now the CD player is not an option for new vehicles. So much for new technology. I will have to buy new equipment and transfer all of my music on a new device to listen to my old CD's. I do not have a smartphone and do not wish to subscribe to a music service to listen to my old songs.

Love my 2010 Chevy cobalt! Perfect for new drivers.
Is the perfect first car for a newly licensed teenage driver. I got the car in 2015 with low mileage and it is still running strong. Haven't had any major problems with it so far other than having to replace a couple of spark plugs not to long ago. Good mileage, $20 puts it over full.

Cobalt gets the job done!
For some reason my blinker does not make the noise in the car but I like that. It still works externally. My tire pressure sensors have given me some trouble over the years and I've had to replace them all but that seems normal BC its ten years old now.

Value of money and performance is as expected.
Performance is good. Clearance is less. Car is reliable and you get the value for your money. Comfort is good and as expected and value for money. Features are you have alloy wheels with tubeless tires and airbags. You get abs in addition which is an added advantage in premium range cars.

2010 Chevrolet cobalt review.
Overall, I enjoy this car. It gets great gas mileage and drives very smooth. It is plenty of room for me. I like that I can also plug in my aux cord and play music. One thing I do not like about my car is that it does not have automatic locks. Sometimes it is a hassle getting in and out of the car because of this.

I have enjoyed my 2010 Chevy cobalt for the most part.
I have had some electrical problems that are apparently pretty common with the radio and front windows. The front windows have not been able to roll down for about three or four years. Other than that I enjoy the size and look of the car. I am about to hit ninety thousand miles on it and just started having issues with the transmission.

Front wheel drive hard to drive in snow, good gas mileage and good speakers.
It has very good gas mileage since it is a manual, although I do have a coupe version and it can be difficult to get people in and out of the back at times. It also has an aux cord which I like and it heats up or cools down relatively quickly considering it is age.

My cute cozy Cobalt. Very reliable
No real problems with the car. The alignment is off and pulls to the right, other than that just return maintenance. It has been very reliable for the past 4 years. It has power steering, windows, locks, and a remote start. Bluetooth connection your phone for hands free options. The bucket seats aren't for everyone but I am small so the car is a perfect fit. Great for a single person car. It is definitely not big enough for a family being a two door.

Family friendly and work friendly.
It is been a good car to me. It kept me and my step kids and my step grandchild safe in a car accident. It is never let me down so far. I love it is appearance, it is size, and the comfort. It has room to haul my tools in the trunk along with me and my husband and dog.

Bought new in 2010, still use reliably!
I have been driving this car cross-country for 10 years, and while the little things stop working it has been a very solid machine for me. The turn canceller broke, only the back speakers work, the body is a little dinged up, but overall this car is still in great shape.

Good on gas but slowly breaking down.
Slowly breaking down and the heat will hardly heat up. Knocking noise when I drive too far. Windows don't roll up fast. Air conditioner doesn't cool quickly in the summer. Its does good on gas. The movements for both mirrors do not work and had to replace my gear stick.

That it has been a very reliable vehicle!
I love it because it fits me! Not to big and not to small! It has not cost me a lot off unexpected repairs. Reliable!

Poor little 2010 Chevrolet.
The sensors for tire pressure are kaput, the car has trouble accelerating after a full stop (or a slowdown), the brakes are squeaky, and it uses gas and oil rather quickly. It is a ten year old car it shouldn't be that bad of! Being an American-made car I thought it would be problem free for longer.

My vehicle has: Touch screen radio system. Bluetooth.
The vehicle performance is ok my car has some issue like bad traction on the rain. My engine light is always turning on and off. My tires are always going low. Also my radio systems always turns on and off. Overall the car has good gas mileage. The air and heat works pretty good.

Great vehicle to save money with gas and get the most use of it.
I am afraid he airbags are faulty. Otherwise is a very safe vehicle. I live where it snows a portion of the year and rust has started to happen. Great gas price and maintenance other than rust. Basic features like CD player, radio. I like cruise control. What is up with Chevy's and their symbol falling off the vehicle. In winter so hard to crack bumper.

Cheap model, lower on gas than other vehicles, but not very roomy.
It is small. Very crowded. Good on gas, though. Does It's job and gets me to and from work.

Great first car or commute car
Good overall performance. Does have issues with cheap plastic parts falling off. Is a great car for daily work commute. Great on gas. Gets roughly 23 in the city and 37 on highway. Repairs are cheap enough and has a solid 4 cyl engine. Very little issues since owning this new
