2019 Chevrolet Colorado Review: Reliable & Comfortable Small Truck With Reasonable Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Jan 28, 2023

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado lasts around 250,000 miles with some transmission and engine sensor issues. At $23,350 to $40,990, it’s a decent value for a small truck with good off-road capabilities, which can tow a lot of weight.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The towing capacity is higher than other small pickup trucks, it’s easy to drive in large cities and the suspension is comfortable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The front seats aren’t as comfortable as other trucks, there’s not a lot of in-cabin storage space and safety technology is also lacking.

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado a Good Used Truck?

Lots of features included, comfortable.
This vehicle includes lots of features that add to ones comfort when driving. Especially during the winter months, having features such as remote start, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel are all little luxuries that make this vehicle a pleasure to drive.

The Colorado is an amazing truck that drives like a car.
Excellent performance. It has the power I need to get onto the freeway and maneuver easily. I enjoy how the radio connects to my phone. It does not feel as if I am driving a truck but more of a car. I like all the small areas I can store things (I.E. Under seats, center console, etc.).

Chevy Colorado all you need is a test drive then open your wallet.
This thing is the real deal. I haven't had any problems. I do wish I went with the extended cab 4 door because these back seats are for small children only. It tows like a champ. I recommend you take one out for a test drive. You'll love it to. Oh two screens and OnStar backup camera really comes in handy.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado - l. Fernberg.
The Chevrolet Colorado has exceeded my expectations. The truck is comfortable, rides well and has a lot of storage space. Even though I know it is a truck, I wish it would get better gas mileage. Overall, I am completely satisfied with this purchase.
accountCircle Jason R
Great storage and still gives the truck feel with a taste of SUV.
Having the bed of the truck is amazing and makes me feel like I cannot go back to a car or SUV. I recommend it to people who transport contents and move a lot. For one who plays sports, the bed makes it easy to just throw things in the back of it and not having to worry about room. I also recently bought a tent that sets up in the bed of my truck. I have gone on camping trips with it and makes it easy for a quick weekend getaway with it also being a cheap experience.

The color is the most beautiful silver/blue I have ever seen.
I have never had any problems with my truck. It is reliable, easy to drive, and gets great gas mileage. The trucks set up inside the car is also fantastic and extremely roomie. I have packed it full for moving many times and never ran out of space. My friends and I also always hang out in the bed of the truck and never run out of space.
accountCircle Massiel M
Great if you have kids and great mileage.
Got the v6 engine which runs very good and great gas performance. I have 2 car seats in the back and still has plenty of legroom for the kids. It's very convenient to move things because of the truck bed and serves as an SUV because of the space and high.

Safe, reliable but not too comfortable in the backseat!
My vehicle is very reliable, I feel at ease in it due to all the safety features it has, and also due to how big it is (truck). The front seat is very comfortable, however I do wish there was more space in the backseat. I feel like any friends or family who ride in the backseat would not like to if they had to for a long period of time (30+ minutes). The media system is awesome! But sometimes it glitches. Overall I love it though.

Poor poor poor quality
From driving my 2919 Colorado WT crew cab 4x4 off the lot I have had nothing but ongoing problems with the fuel gauge not reading correctly. (Will not go to full, only to 7/8 at best) After several days of driving the gauge will creep upwards towards full. Has been back to the dealer twice with no resolve. Problem 2- Truck feels like it is going over rumble strips at highway speeds. According to information provided to me be the dealership, the wrong fluid was used in the transmission/torque converter. Problem is, special tools are required to drain and reinstall the correct fluid and GM has not supplied them to the dealership yet. (Aprox 1 months wait) aThis is for the 8 speed automatic transmission only I am being told. I have requested a buy back from GM because this is totally ridiculous! Buy back is in process.
accountCircle Freddie Godbee
Just right all the wrongs GM has done to us on the 8 speed transmision.
I will if they correct the transmission in mine and the vibration. If they cant I want my money back, ridiculous to have a truck your wife and daughter are afraid to drive.

Mechanical problems and price.
Brand new truck with mechanical problems. Feels like the transmission is going bad. Half the push buttons don't work. It sounds like I'm hitting road ruts every time I drive. It's a good looking truck but the functionality of it isn't where it needs to be for the price and year.

Tranny and stalling out during hard braking
I have a ‘19 Colorado 2wd Z71. This is my third Colorado, I also had a ‘16 and a ‘17. Had no problems with my first 2. This ‘19 has had a couple of serious problems. First the tranny was very rough and the truck would sputter terribly between 45-55 mph. GM said it was the transmission fluid. They changed the fluid and the problem, although less evident, still exists. I also have had 3 instances where the truck has stalled completely during hard braking, once almost resulting in an impact. Is anyone else experiencing these issues?

Amazing features that draw one in. The comfortableness is astonishing.
It has amazing features that I would buy again. It is very comfortable, for my liking. Has not given me any problems. The interior is my favorite part of this vehicle. I am pleased that I purchased this vehicle. Every detail of a car matters towards one's interest.

Great performance and attractive. Just need some maintenance.
Leakage of coolant and oil problem. Only it. Others all are good. Performance is awesome. I can drive very smoothly. I think my car is quite reliable. A lot of updated feature is included in the car. So, overall car is very nice and I am quite happy. But I have to rectify the coolant leakage problem. Then it will be more attractive.

Great family car and off-roading vehicle.
Love the way I'drives! Honestly nicest car I have ever driven! Perfect for off roading, driving in the snow, skiing, hiking and getting to the beach far off the beat and trail. Perfect family and off roading car and my family just loves it! Absolutely recommend to everyone considering it!

Chevy Colorado good and bad features that needs improvement.
There needs to be a lock on the gas tank. The backup camera needs to make a sound when you get too close to a object. It's good on gas I like the was the gas mileage left will show exactly miles on gas tanks. Some apps on the radio feature are not needed or don't work.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Colorado?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado is a good compact truck, although owner satisfaction scores are lower than average.
  • Edmunds rates the Colorado at 3.7/5, praising the available diesel engine, but doesn’t like the limited advanced safety features.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Colorado a 4.3/5, enjoying the high towing capacity, but owners don’t like the relatively small interior.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado include shuddering from the eight-speed transmission, check engine lights, as well as a frozen touchscreen stereo system. Overall, these problems are similar to other pickup trucks on the market, leading to average repair bills as the Colorado ages.

Shuddering from the eight-speed transmission is the  most common complaint from Colorado owners at around 10,000 miles. There are software updates for the transmission which improves its performance in changing gears. There are rare cases where the transmission has physical damage and has to be replaced. Most of the time a replacement is covered under warranty on such a new truck, although if it’s out of warranty expect to pay around $3,500.

Check engine lights are another issue reported by some 2019 Colorado owners in the first 7,500 miles. There are many reasons a check engine light may turn on, but usually it’s caused by a sensor issue. Some owners have even reported just a loose connection at a sensor. Diagnosing the issue usually costs around $50, while solving it can range from $20 to $150 depending on the source.

A frozen touchscreen stereo system also happens on some Colorado models in the first 1,000 miles. There are a lot of software updates for the stereo system which improves its reliability. Most dealerships will install updates for a fee, while some charge a service fee of around $50.

There are no recalls on the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado, which is fewer than most other small trunks on the market.

How Long Will the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Chevy Colorado can last around 250,000 miles, which is over 50,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Tacoma, which is famous for its reliability. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other small trucks, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $480 per year.

As a used 2019 Chevrolet Colorado reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the thermostat for $800, ignition coils costing $225, as well as the transmission oil cooler line which costs $300.

Yes reliable. No problems, there are no problems at this time. Not sure how I can elaborate on reliability and having no problems.

accountCircle Andrea R

I have not had any problems so far owning my truck for a little over a year now. Everything works as it should and I would recommend it to others.

accountCircle Carlos R

It is extremely reliable and I have not had any problems with the truck. It has a smooth ride and a quiet engine compared to trucks I have owned in the past.

accountCircle Sophie V

My Chevy is a reliable truck so far I have had it 6 months and I have not had any problems. Drives smooth

accountCircle Terri S

So far yes - one day the radio didn't work and another time the reversing camera said it needed service but both issues were resolved by turning the car off and on again

accountCircle Amanda G

I have never had a problem with the Colorado, very dependable, starts every time and rides nice over bumps and train tracks!

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great for a small truck in the 2019 Chevy Colorado with a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The LT and higher models get a larger 8-inch touchscreen.

Safety technology is basic compared to other modern trucks with a standard rearview camera and Teen Driver mode, which allows you to set speed and volume limits. Optional advanced safety features include an HD rearview camera, rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, along with lane departure warning.

Is the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Chevy Colorado is a good value for a small truck since it’s reliable and capable off-road. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $23,350 to $40,990, making it more than a Ford Ranger or Nissan Frontier. When new, the price range was $21,300 to $42,900. Depreciation is very slow in current conditions, although in a normal market depreciation rates should be around 7% of its current value per year.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Chevy Colorado came out in 2015, and is going to be replaced by the third generation for the 2023 model year.

2015: Fully redesigned for the second generation after being out of production for three years.

2016: 4-Cylinder diesel engine offered, optional Apple CarPlay available.

2017: New 8-speed transmission, upgraded V6 engine, and the ZR2 model introduced with a better suspension.

2018: Standard Apple CarPlay & Android Auto on all models, new 7-inch stereo system.

2019: More USB ports, improved rearview camera, and an updated stereo system.

2020: Remote locking tailgate added to the lineup.

2021: Base model discontinued, new front bumper style introduced.

How Does the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Chevrolet Colorado is a decent truck, offering improvements from earlier years, making it a better choice for shoppers in the market for a smaller pickup truck.

The Ford Ranger is another small truck which is available in the same price range. Interior materials are a bit nicer in the Ford Ranger, while off-road performance is better in the Chevy Colorado. We recommend the Chevrolet Colorado to many shoppers, although it’s worth test driving both to see which you prefer.

The Toyota Tacoma is a competitor available for about $5,000 more. Reliability ratings are better in the Toyota Tacoma, while the Chevy Colorado has a nicer interior for the money. We recommend the Toyota Tacoma since the extra money is worth the cost for its outstanding reliability ratings.

Transmission hard shifts1st to 2 nd
The only issue. With this truck is it hard shifts from 1 st to 2nd. Took it to the dealer in Carson City the kept it overnight. So they could duplicate the issue. They reprogramed it first. And it still did it. So they replaced the valve body and programmed it again. Still does not shift correctly. Filed a complaint with GM nothing was done. Issue not resolved.

Fuel, and temperature gauges. Learning the 8 speed transmission.
The temperature, and fuel gauges are about the size of a quarter and tucked under a small area of the gauge cluster. I ran out of fuel twice. The automatic 8 speed transmission is weird. You have to put the trans in Low then jog the+- up and down, and from there I'm still learning.

Great condition, z71 extended cab with 4wd. Color is gray.
Size of the truck is exactly what I was looking for. Along with the extended cab, there is more than enough room to accommodate 4 people comfortably. Gas mileage is around 20 mpg, which has been an added bonus. I live on a hill, during snow or ice storms, there has been no issues with the 4wd.

Smoothest riding truck I have ever owned. Enough space to haul bikes, kayaks and more. Fits in my garage with a little room to spare. My kids love this truck as well and we often take it on three hour trips. They are 13, 11 and 8 and have more than adequate leg room in the back seat area.

Headlights keep burning out I have replaced the. Both 2 times now and it is getting to be annoying. The passenger tail light also burnt out as I was plugging in my trailer. Adventurous, comfy, and spacious Colorado.
Being home alone most of the time, this truck has come in super handy with being able to get some outside work done. Its small and compact, yet its spacious on the interior and can fit full grown men even in the back seat. It is excellent when having to go offroading to get to our livestock or even on our camping adventures. The 4wd is easy to use and smooth once you get going. The only changes I would want to do is get it lifted at least another inch because it can be a little low at times when going off road. Its excellent on gas and normally use a quarter of a tank for a 2.5hr drive. I have not had any maintenance issues since I purchased my Colorado a year and a half ago.

The truck is a great truck other than the size. Really no complaints.
The truck has not really given me any issues other than the radio occasionally staying turned off when I first start the truck up. May be a wiring issue or a faulty ground. Quite unsure, haven't really taken the time out of my day to get it diagnose because of how solemn it happens. Other than that, the truck has plenty of power and has no hesitation with anything I have put it through. Another downfall is that it is a midsize truck, so you do not have much room. But if that is and okay size for what you are looking for. You will love the truck.

Comfy, powerful, perfect midsize truck.
The comfort of the vehicle is amazing. We can go on long road trips and be very comfortable for a truck. It also has surprising power, both in acceleration and for towing. The one issue so far has been some vibrations at very high speeds that do not seem to be due to balance or alignment of the tires. But the size is perfect for a small family that wants a truck but does not need anything huge.

Sluggish on start up
2019 Colorado 4X4. Colour is great, RED and roomy inside. Problem that I am encountering is a choking or hesitation when you accelerate on a cold start. Too fast it throws you forward as it feels like no gas getting to engine then throws you back as it picks up. GM saids nothing wrong with that. Still under warranty and will try to get GM to keep looking at it.

Very reliable Chevy Colorado.
My Chevy Colorado is a very reliable truck that get fairly good gas mileage. It has a crew cab so a total of 5 people can ride in it at a time. The bed of the truck has a good capacity and a tonneau cover. This Colorado handles well in all sorts of weather conditions.

Chevy Colorado is a good truck.
My Chevrolet Colorado has been a good vehicle. It rides comfortably. It has enough features to be accommodating. It gets good gas mileage. It had a good price. It is a good pickup truck. The heating and air conditioning work well. We have had no problems with it.

Sporty and powerful handles great!
I like my mid size pickup I have always had full size pickups but I bought this mid size to fit into my garage better. I was very surprised to see how powerful and how good this truck handles. I also like how it handles and like the sporty look of it as well.

The Bluetooth touchscreen is awesome.
High performance quality. Very reliable. Amazing inside features including a Bluetooth touch screen. The Chevy Colorado drives really well. The inside is a little small but there is still a lot of comfort. I recommend this truck, I have owned it for about three years now and is the best truck that I have driven.

2019 Colorado z71 crew cab short box.
2019 Colorado is one of the best vehicles I have owned thus far. It has 3.6 v6 engine, plenty of horsepower. Drives like a true truck and can do all the hauling I need to do with a max tow of 7k. Crew cab is plenty large with enough interior space that you feel comfortable in and not squeezed in sitting to the person beside you. Best feature is the rear window and parking assist sensors. Touch screen is also a big bonus.

Big truck feel in a smaller footprint.
Great truck. It has all the comfort of a full sized truck in a smaller footprint which makes parking and maneuvering in tight spaces easier than the full sized Silverado I traded in. The front and rear locking 4wd has saved me from calling for a tow already. Towing capacity is less than the standard Colorado, but I haven't needed that. Much yet.

The interior is sleek and well thought out.
This vehicle is the most well handling vehicle I have ever driven. The interior design was well thought out. This vehicle is by far the most ideal vehicle for me. I have never gotten stuck anywhere since it is four wheel drive. It ties whatever I need to tow. Again best vehicle.

Soul soothing, I actually enjoy driving again!
I love it! Great gas mileage, sirius XM radio, Bose sound system. One of my favorite features is the remote start, the truck detects the outside temp and determines whether to turn on the heat or the a/c. Also the defrost runs of an electric element, so it is starts defrosting without waiting on the vehicle to warm up first.

The good and the board that goes with any vehicle.
I have had stereo issues since I have gotten the vehicle but it seems the shop has finally fixed the problem other than that I love the truck. The reliability has been there on performance and I cannot complain. If I were to buy another Colorado I wouldn't buy a wt I would buy a regular truck that has more options.

Chevy Colorado 2019 truck review.
The truck is overall great. Rides good and gets really good gas mileage. After a year of owning the truck there are a few areas that have begun to rust. However the truck has held up great and there are no further issues with the truck. The Chevy Colorado can tow my boat very easily.

Power and performance that meets your needs.
I love the 3.6l, 308 hp v6 it has under the hood. Getting from 0-60 to merge with traffic onto the freeway is no effort at all for this pickup. It has a considerable amount of towing that this can do also. The black interior for the desert however is the least desirable thing for this gm product.

Chevy Colorado z71 pros and cons.
I love my Colorado. It rides super smooth and is a very comfy ride. The only thing I would change about it is the audio and the get up and go. The audio sounds quite soft and if you have the windows down you cannot hear it well. Also, the truck has power but when it comes to getting up and going from and complete stop I feel like it struggles. Now getting up and going while already moving it has no problem! I honestly would recommend buying it cause I love mine!

Looks good, rides great, has power.
Love the look, color, power, backup view, heated seats, floor mats, under seat storage in back, pull out con. In back. How high it from the ground. Size of the tires, look of the tire rims. Having Wi-Fi sound of the radio. Heater and air con are great has powerful fan.

I enjoy the ability to illuminate the tailgate.
I have had no problems with my current vehicle, it is extremely reliable with wonderful gas mileage with about 500 miles with a full tank which is great when driving home to Indiana from school in Kansas. This vehicle also drives extremely smoothly especially on country roads.

I like that it has touch screen and apple carplay.
Seats are not very comfortable. Do not like the hill start assist or the check in rear seat reminders. I wish that the package came with a little more exterior stuff like fender flares and/or running boards, window tint. I felt like this package was very slim on details.

Fun, sporty, ride with good hauling capacity.
Have driven the truck since June. Initially I thought it would be too small since I grew up with full size trucks. I have adjusted to the size and I love having the box so I am not limited by roof height. The controls are well placed and not so different that it is difficult to remember where they are. There seems to be plenty of legroom in the back and it is a decent ride with 4 people. Climate control is good, decent amount of places to tuck things out of the way.

Android auto, tow package, my own high ceiling are topper. Matching white.
I have no issues with this truck. It is my 4th gm truck, in a row. This one gets easily ~26 mpg in town, and up to 38 mpg on highway. I have the 2.5l i4, 6 spd manual. Adding the automatic to this engine, or the 3.2l v6, the mileage is the same, fully disgusting!
accountCircle Paul D on October 6, 2020
This truck looks great, drives great, and hauls great. It is a great deal.
It has adequate acceleration, a good ride, good inside storage the jump seat is basically useless, but know that is true of all jump seats in extended cabs. Maker should offer an option for storage bins instead of seat. I love the look of vehicle for a base model ( with optional appearance package) it looks like I spent a lot more than I did. It is easier to handle in parking lots and other tight spaces than full size trucks.
